- Jim Jarmusch joined Film Society of Lincoln Center's Gavin Smith for a Q&A following a screening of The Limits of Control on April 30th, 2009
Set in the striking and varied landscapes of contemporary Spain (both urban and otherwise), shot by acclaimed cinematography Christopher Doyle, and featuring music by cult Japanese psychedelic metal band Boris, The Limits of Control is the story of a mysterious loner (played by Isaach De Bankolé) whose activities remain meticulously outside the law. He is in the process of completing a job, yet he trusts no one, and his objectives remain a mystery until the very end of the film. His journey, paradoxically both intently focused and dreamlike, takes him not only across Spain but also through his own consciousness.
In addition to De Bankolé, The Limits of Control also features several other actors with whom Jim Jarmusch has previously worked, including Alex Descas, John Hurt, Youki Kudoh, Bill Murray, and Tilda Swinton; and actors new to his films, including Hiam Abbass, Gael García Bernal, Paz De La Huerta, Jean-François Stévenin, and Luis Tosar.
Jim the chillest person alive.
Damn. I don't understand how someone can have such a unique way of thinking in this world of society and use words so well.
And he is not alone with that. So we are lucky. ;)
that's funny. every day i wonder how much people all have such a conformist and identical way of thinking in this society, and use words so poorly.
i'm not kidding.
I could listen to him talk all day!!!
Real talk!!
@@caveman861 same here :)
Me too..!!Must b very cool..to b @'The Table..wth Jim.(ig)&,Jim J.&,Others..id be "Ah can i record this just as this is Priceless..informative.et al.:-)
Limits of Control is one of my favourite films but I can understand why people would hate it.
what an amazing human. cinema should be grateful for these kind of people.
Okay... I'm 5 minutes in.....already like this guy.
Limits was gorgeous and inspiring.
you are awesome sir...
I love this film
It was boring
beautiful hearing him talk about those who he works with
One of the best interview e's around
Kind advice: when interviewing, ask succinct, specific, direct, clear questions. You seem to be a nice chap, but I found myself growing impatient, waiting for each question to be simply posed to Mr. Jarmusch. Cheers.
"nice chap"
xd
God forbid anyone speak naturally, freely and unscripted.
Note that on the 20th minute (19m27s+) Mr Jarmusch gives away the idea of "Only lovers left alive" which only went into casting/pre-production phase in 2010 ;)
Greets from Vienna!-)
I’d love to go to Vienna someday
@@lizf208 in spring she is a beauty indeed.
@@Eflodur wow I was not expecting a response, thank you so much! Also happy birthday JJ 😊
too bad i can't hear any of the questions. Jarmusch brilliant not only as director but also philosophically.
Who knew a current "artist" could also be so globally attuned? The world needs politicians who are sensitive to global longterm effects instead of personal power plays.
Jim Jarmusch, one of my favorite directors.
The Limits of Waxing Poetic!!!
Down by Law is career's best work.
Truth
Any chance of him collaborating on a piece with Emmanuel Lubezki??
Who's interviewing whom?
Gold and silver don't oxidize. Gold - completely.
How's that guy/topic/whatever spelled... "Pi Thygerus" or something? Can't find anything on the internet about this interesting things Jim Jarmusch talked of in the interview.
Would I know if I'd seen any other Jarmusch films than Limits Of Control?
how about pythagoras the greek?! haha! oh man
LuckylyLuke I had a Thaggorus Pie once : the isosceles was undercooked and I cut my lip on an acute angle in the pastry....._Never again!_
+LuckylyLuke did you just reply to yourself?
I did. Self-awareness is the first step towards improvement… (-;
Why is gold worth more than copper? Because the material doesn't oxidize as quickly, Jim.
20 years ago I would say this is pseudointellectual bs, but after stimulating my mind with natural fungus, everything makes total sense and "Normal" thinking seems like a sick and lost way of looking at things, great movie
Really annoying interviewer. Dont mind his demeanor but the actual content, length and angle of the questions is just not cool or interesting.
You're not interesting. Jim's great, why even think of an interviewer, I haven't even noticed him. It was all right.
Okay British guy… okay…
lol 40 damn pages of 'it was stupid. so boring. makes no sense. nothing happens' on rotten tomatoes just confirms that he's still got it
@JT if you expect traditional narrative going into it, you will be disappointed
@JT yeah, pop is a genre of music that prominently uses repetition, I don't see what's wrong with that
@JT and I really don't see how that ties into the narrative of this film, it's definitely not a very mainstream movie, I just don't think that analogy makes sense
@JT you seem to have a very limited idea of what movies (and music) can be. if you don't enjoy watching 2 hours of beautiful scenery and a cool guy hanging out that's fine, but it's not a critique against the film. same goes for music, there's plenty of long ambient or otherwise minimalist compositions that are just slight variations of the same thing over and over, and still are highly enjoyable to listen.
One of two of my most favorite films of Jim, and I've watched all and want more of everything Jim creates
Jim Jarmusch's hairstyle was influenced by Landru from Star Trek
wuuut', is this dude even listening to himself? "Let me talk about PytHAGORAS for a bit" pfft.
Artists are weird people.
@19:35 I knew this guy was a nut job. He accuses ALL WHITE people (the entire group) for the faults of a small minority. He is completely ignorant to the fact that those evil people don't exist today, and the culture back in those days don't exist anymore. It's like accusing all Muslims of being mass murderers based on the terrorists in the surrounding Iraq area. It's ignorant thinking, and I only came her to verify what I thought about his movie being "pure trash", given that I understood the meaning. I am now happier knowing I understood the movie correctly, and it is still "pure trash".
You're a chronically upset idiot ignoring the fact that this is already happening - all these things return to Africa and stuff
You speak shit.
Charlie Chuckleberry
He doesn't accuse anybody in the room of being a racist colonialist. Listen to Jarmusch again, this time without any dog whistles ringing in your ears. He just states the fact that everyone in the room shares a history in which colonialism happened. If you feel guilty about it yourself, I suggest looking into the psychological phenomenon of "projection".
Also, It's true that "the culture back in those days" doesn't exist anymore, because it is worse in these days. It has grown like a tumor. It conceals itself like criminal. The same self-interested parties who once were simple racist colonialists no longer care about anything, except their own material advancement. Theirs is an anti-culture, as they don't even care about each other. They are parasites, drunk on power, on a blatant doom trip. Do yourself (and everyone else) a favor, and stop listening to their bunk.
(And please understand that I recognize that your point of view may be totally valid for you right now, but I simply disagree with it, and want you to defend your mischaracterization of Mr. Jarmusch.)
1. Those exact people don't exist - but have been replaced with equally capable simpletons today.
2. That culture you refer to is even stronger today - move out of your closed circle to see it from an outside perspective.
3. All Muslims have already been branded terrorists (haven't you been listening to ex-President Don Trump?)
We can only correct and get better if we acknowledge our failings. Humans have a lot of these.
Frankly the only reason I waded through the film was my hope that Bill Murray would redeem it all at the end (when he finally showed up) by coming out to face the audience and say, "What in the hell are you all still doing here? Can none of you see the Emperor has no clothes? Did you all seriously spend all this time... time you can never get back... thinking this film has some meaning? Go home you pathetic sophomoric lemmings!" ...or something like that... but even he sold out and actually tried to go through his lines.
fidelmchristo if the only reason you watched Limits was to see Bill Murray you need to stick to your Netflix "Bill Murray" recommendations and leave these artistic films to real film peeps. Art Wannabe Sheeple like yourself will never get it.
Yeah such a sellout playing in these low budget art flicks no one pays to watch. He really went Hollywood on us
No, matter and material value are not arbitrary and no, pennies can never be made of gold. Jarmusch shows a complete lack of understanding what economics actually is. Economics is the study of optimising the use of limited resources which have alternative uses. The global gold reserve is limited, it is not infinite.
You can't turn the world upside down just because you don't understand how it works and why it works the way it does. It is not "fundamentally broken" and we cannot "all agree to that."
We currently aren't optimizing the use of limited resources so something definitely is fundamentally broken.
@@Bob-uh6gf True that, the fundamentals are broken.
