One of the things that got my mind spinning at the possible opportunities was during that Q&A with Todd Howard. He was asked about a unique experience that occurred when he was playtesting and he described a event where he was planetside when an enemy ship landed near him, I imagine this was part of the random events that can take place while exploring like Skyrim and Fallout 4 have. He was fighting the crew and eventually made his way into the ship, the interesting thing was that while fighting on the ship, it actually took off with him inside it.
I got several questions from this and then some cool theories of gameplay possibilities. First one up is the fact that if NPC ships can take off from planets and there are loading screens between atmosphere landings/takeoffs into space (and vice versa), will you actually be taken along with the NPCs like a stowaway? If that is true, the NPCs will actually naturally travel if they are in your immediate loaded area, will they eventually land again or will they go into a holding pattern somewhere until you capture the ship? If they are programmed to travel and naturally land somewhere else, could they travel to other planets? Could they travel to other systems? Does their ship gear affect how far they go or is it just a basic range they can go?
IF (and that is a big 'if') they can do all these things, you could possibly travel 'some' of the galaxy by becoming the ultimate hitchhiker, whether by stealth or combat. Pirates or friendly factions, get to systems you might not be able to reach early on. I could imagine with cheesing fast travel and your own ship recall mechanics once you get to areas you want to be or get stuck in. Kind of cautiously excited to get more news to see if this theory is right, not a deal breaker if I am wrong but if mods come in the future, that would be pretty fricking awesome.

My guess ( and the highest probability) is that what Todd was describing was part of a scripted quest and not just a regular random event that he might have come upon by chance. There is something similar in Oblivion where you have to sneak on board a boat for a sidequest, but it departs for sea while you are on it. You dont really see the ship sail out, you just get a loading screen, and when you go outside the ship is surrounded by water. This only happens for this quest, and other ships are static in Oblivion, they don't move. My guess is that in starfield enemy Ships wont take off while you're on it, and once they land they become a static part of the environment. It would be awesome if I'm wrong and Starfield has a world and NPCs this organic, but Im trying to tone down the hype before I get disappointed. Don't forget that Todd's still trying to sell you a game by hyping you up, sometimes by not including important details or context.

I'm the opposite opinion about travel time in space.
I want there to be travel times. That will give you an opportunity to do things around your ship or interact with the crew.
With instant travel times, you'll have to pause what you are doing to interact with your ship/crew.
It's something I like to do in SC. I'll get out of my seat and mess around in the ship while in QT. Especially now that I can stack and organize the cargo from salvage missions.

I have to agree on that. For me, when the game allows you to leave the seat and do other stuff, sometimes travelling goes too fast for me. Fast travel will be a good thing for "the grind" but for proplr who like relaxed gameplay and want to do other stuff in the game like in ship stuff, yep I do agree 100%.

I feel like there is a distinct lack of "non-gameplay loop" stuff in game these days. So many games are laser focused on the "loop" that they forget to give us a reason to stay in one area for more than 5 minutes. Or just converse with a random NPC and hear what they have to say. Or really anything that isn't "shoot, loot, repeat". Makes games boring to me. I want a reason to hang out aboard my ship, or in a random space-pub just chatting and having blue colored, alien beer. Fucks sake, even give me a reason to wear casual clothes instead of this bulky space suit.

Space is not a backdrop, but just because it was not viable to ship the game with a prerendered backdrop for every single location! So they let your computer render the backgrounds in real time but still YOU CANNOT SEAMLESSLY FLY WHEREVER YOU WANT! They just made a 2010 game with 2023 graphics, so it will be born being already obsolete. Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen are the real space games for the general public. Or even Kerbal Space Program if you are a little bit nerd. The original and the best true space game around there! A game that even teaches you rocket science. No mention to No Man's Sky because that's the kind of game that a child that has only seen space in cartoons would do, LOL.

They have shown us pretty much everything about space flight and ships.
There is no free roam around the system.
The "flyable" areas are just around a point of interest, planet, space station etc. You get there by plotting a space route in your map as we see in the video and when you hit "engage" button you will have a little cutscene with the stars around the ship going "white lines" (transition screen) and after that either you wait for some time looking at the map seeing a dot (your ship) moving towards the target or you have a loading screen for a little time where the ship enders the target area automatically dropping out of "FTL" speed.
I bet all those areas are very restricted and have boundaries where we get the "return to play area" message if we try to cross.

It seems odds on that we'll be limited to free roaming in local space. The game may let us point and squirt in any direction at a small percentage of warp speed but we'll be naturally deterred by the emptiness of it, instead using it to zip between local structures. All jumps are load screens from one zoned play area to another. Mechanically that describes planet side exploration, so it's a consistent design. From my experience of working with the Creation Engine and how it organizes structurally, that's important.

I'm very curious about the pace of play they're establishing with the spaceship flying!

We've seen the galaxy and system maps, but we haven't seen anything in between them, like supercruise. We've seen a ship jumping between systems and they seem to exit the jump in local space around a body, so that's encouraging.
Still, I am a still a little nervous about how system space travel will be implemented. I could see a list of potential 'arenas' being added to the system map and you just select one to drop into it.

I still think that any space game moving forward should be multiplayer. If you give us 100k planets to explore and you cant explore them with a friend then its a pretty lonely ride. Im hopeful that this game is good but im tempering expectations . I learned my lesson when NMS shipped, it was pretty cool landing on the first 30 planets and checking out the local flora and fauna but it was just super empty without anyone else to play with.
My thoughts are star field should be a multiplayer game.

I'm afraid we won't be 'supercruise' -ing in System. They've showed only the jump from system to system, or maybe you'll have to jump from a planet to planet and that's it. But that would be dumb. I wouldn't be mad if they'd make it like in Everspace 2, where you can't jump out everywhere only when something pops up on your radar ( POI, Mission, Help ) but if you'll jump from one planet to another with that animation, the exploration will be gone.

The showcase of the FTL jumps also worries me, but I can't imagine why they would remove free-roaming (if that's indeed the case). This feature has been a part of space sims for decades, like EVE Online and Elite Dangerous. It's unlikely to be due to technical issues.

The fact we can't land on planets, can't fly in atmosphere, probably the place we land will be limited, probably no 'supercruise' in space and these small things are slowly making my interest fall. Probably it'll be a fantastic game for a lot of gamers, but those who are looking for a open game like SC or Elite but better, won't be satisfied :( But this is only my opinion, noone have to accept it :) i just feel this

the interesting thing about Starfield for me, and why I'm looking forward to it, I'm rather hoping to see how it compares to Star Citizen. I'm frankly keeping my fingers crossed they deliver on every promise made, and on a few promises they haven't made. while Star Citizen might be a tad more involved, it's more the principle of "this is how you deliver a space game" at work that's interesting. As far as I know Starfield has spent far less time than Star Citizen being developed, and if all goes well (big if, knowing Bethesda's reputation for launchday bugs...), this game can be a gigantic "get bent, bitch!" towards Cloud Imperium Games, with a hopefulle added effect of them finally pushing that game into Beta, if only to pick up a gauntlet thrown down.
