What I like about this is that instead of coming boldly in like an Envangelist, the tenor here is a minister on the verge of losing his faith. It makes us listen to the words again, and ask what they really mean, what they really mean for us, each of us individually. By acknowledging doubt, the director Claus Guth makes this a deeper spiritual experience for me than most Messiahs that one just hears as performances.
I just saw Richard Croft as Loge in the 2012 Met Das Rheingold. He was so terrific that I started looking him up and came first across this. Just wow. Glory guy.
One will be hard pressed to find, heat or re-create a better actor or singer accomplish Loge’s role any better or even match that performance to which you refer. Find Croft’s Handel Theodora performance at Glyndebourne DVD where appears w Dawn Upshaw & the late great Loraine Hunt (best mezzo). Unforgettable.
I was lucky enough to see Mr. Croft perform live in this, and also some years later as Idomeneo at Theater an der Wien. The best contemporary Mozart tenor, in my opinion.
I wouldn't want it staged every time. What I like about this is that instead of coming boldly in like an Envangelist, the tenor here is a minister on the verge of losing his faith. Mr. Croft's melisma is sooo close to perfection; thank you for sharing his amazing talents. :)

that's my favourite (musically, the production is ugly as sin) Idomeneo! Croft = wonderful.
Araiza and Hadley are better as I see it.
it cannot be more breathtaking. Wonderful
Amazing power and clarity.
Beautiful!
yes, absolutely stunning.. the Ensemble Matheus playing exceptional as usually, too
Wow, the runs are clean and accurate! Bravo!
Absolutely ravishing!

I venerate you, Richard.
One of my hopeful wishes is to meet
you before death.
Long live.
Interesting. Never saw this staged! However, beautiful singing!
Beautiful singing.... hideous staging.
Weird to set this to a modern staging or even a staging at all.
The key has been lowered by a half step.
Akinkunmi Cook it’s at baroque pitch.
@@MrAristaeus yep, ~A415 instead of A440
Not a fan of it staged. It takes away from the music.
