- The last days of before Conrail around Marion, Ohio, then a long movement of deadline engines from Marion Yard (closed as a classification yard effective "Conrail day" 4/1/1976) to Bellefontaine on the ex-Penn Central Indianapolis Line. Also notice the 40' boxcars stored awaiting sale on the mainline.

About the last ever footage of ERIE 520.
For those who don't know,,,,ERIE 520 was hidden in and around Akron by the local employees as the very last ERIE painted loco.
Never was painted EL.
Although, I personally saw and photoed an ERIE Lima built switcher at Middletown , OHIO in 1977. In the deadline there. I don't know how long the Lima lasted at Middletown.
Middletown had 2 former BO and 2 former EL,,,,,with the one being pure ERIE.
I remember 520 very well and saw it around Akron many times....how they kept hidden in that two stall locomotive shed is a funny story, it would go into hiding during OCS runs in the area...too bad it wasn't saved.
That funeral train is super sad to watch, but I'm eternally grateful for everyone who went out and filmed and photographed so much like that during the final days of EL. In fact, I feel like the majority of photos and videos shot of the EL were the early months of '76. They all knew what was coming and recorded a lot of history in a short time.

Sad & awesome at the same time. The funeral train and the stored 40' boxcars sure do tell a sad tale. I worked for the EL for 9 years before Conrail. Loved the job more than any I've had since I was out of options on Conrail in 1982. Thank you for this video.
Did you work in the 43302 ?
@@thevarietyvideohub2208 I hired out in the 43302 in 1967 and worked there exclusively for the next year and a half. After my time in the Army, I was able to work in Akron Ohio. Since my home was near by, it made sense to work that terminal one 43302. Thanks for coming on board today.

Good shot at 3:51 of the old NYC Freight House in Marion. Sad about switcher 520. Wish it could have been saved.
That entire line of Alcos and 520 sat in a dead line west of the Marion engine house, over towards the old ice house almost an entire summer. I have slides I took of them as well as the ice house.
@@bconman I never got over to Marion in the EL era sadly. Looked like they parked all that power on one of the the old "Chicken Tracks" there by the Ice House. Or maybe on one of the East departure Yd trks. You're lucky you saw Marion back then.

PC 8121 became CR 8121 and is still alive and running as CSXT 2746.

These EL locos were stored at Bellfontaine for quite awhile.
I suppose they were taking the slow train to Chicago for scrapping.
Most if not all of these units were scraped at Pielet Bros. Scrap yard in McCook IL. in 1977....sadly
Thank you so much for uploading these videos. My grandfather used fo work for Erie Lackawanna railroad his whole life outside of the Army. I was kinda hoping to maybe find him in one of your videos. He worked in the Marion, Oh area

The death of one of the classiest railroads in the US. Sad. I’m sure all those 40’ boxcars were cut up, because by ‘76 there wasn’t much use for them. Southern Railway took a bunch of theirs, pulled the side doors off and started hauling agricultural limestone in them. A pile in each end of the car! After several years, the wood floors had deteriorated to the point that the loaders they drove in and out of the cars started falling through, and that was the end of them. Employees called them “doorless wonders”
