    Hi guys! Join along as I do a walk-around of 1604 and spout off a few facts and point out specific components on the locomotive, including an in-depth cab overview. It would be pretty amazing if 1604 was one day restored, but I'm not keeping my hopes up. Enjoy =)

    Considering the complex operations of this engine, it’s unlikely that it will steam again. But hey, I’m at least happy it has a home!

    Too bad CSX doesn't lease this one, or the 1601, and put one back in operation, like UP did the Big Boy.

    The Alleghenies, in my opinion, are the epitome of Lima's Super Power concept. Not only were their boilers bigger than the Big Boy's, they were also very efficient. The fact that they can produce so much drawbar horsepower with just 260 psi is impressive to me, and their steam generation probably surpasses any other steam locomotive.

      Saturated steam pressure has nothing to do with power production in a steam locomotive. It is all about the superheat of the steam than causes the expansion in the cylinders. Steam Locomotives are thermodynamic heat engines, not pressure engines like air tools. Power is all about (1) the heat of the steam and (2) the volume of steam a boiler can produce. The heat of the steam is related to the efficiency of the superheaters and the volume of steam produced is related to the direct heating surface of the boiler. Want a powerful steam locomotive? Give it high superheat and a high volume of steam production. The Allegheny hits both of those metrics with its boiler.

    I also would like to add the 8 that were ordered by Virgina RR they were called the Blueridge class, also the fact brought up about the being the heaviest, that was from the first batch, and cost lima dearly wipeing out most of the money they made from the first batch, though much of the weight was due to over enginering as it was developled from paper to working locomotive, I also did a view of an artical on my channel from the C&O historical society about the H8 class, reading it on video and showing the wording, people say the allegeny is not as strong as a big boy but what they dont realize is the limit of the length of trains by the sidings on the c and o so it could have pulled way more, but the lenght limits of the sidings and length of storage tracks limited the size of trains, and the allegheny did what the c and o wanted it to do, did roughly twice the work of the H7 and in half the time even if it was used for drag freight when it was designed for fast freight, though it did on occasion pull 40 car Plus troop trains in ww2, I would like to add

    Not an Allegheny but the similar looking 2-6-6-2 number 1304 is being restored by the western Maryland (albeit its taking a million years)

      And it’s a way harder process than you think if you think it’s taking so long you try keeping people from stealing parts while it’s taken apart

    I'm making/designing a train for a video game - thank you for the video, this is perfect reference material! Its probably going to be a steam engine that was converted to diesel lol. This is the first I've learned about trains, they are fantastic machines, especially this one!

    Wow I got to go see this! I was watching extinct American locomotives on RUclips and they said the Alleghenys were all chopped up. I'd luv to see this old girl steam again. She my 1st favorite next to the big boy 😉 Oh and I think that 1st little level next to the auto is the cut out so if that loco is double headed and in trail you would flip that so it wouldn't take a reduction.

    I would give my left pinky to work on the team that rebuilt that beauty. I have in in N scale brass and may get one in HO scale. Can weld, machine, fabricate and run lots of power tools. What a dream to see her run again. I know there are strange people who feel the same about the PRR T1 and I know how long 1309 and 4014 took. Dream on........

    Looking at the inside of the cab it does not look like there is any room for a toilet. Where does the engineer or fireman go if they need to go to the washroom?

    Their Total Weight Equal That OF The Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boys. The VIRGINIAN’s Monster 2-10-10-2s Sounded IF They Ought TO BE Bigger, Actually They Had Larger Boilers But Their Wheels Are Only 56 Inches IN Diameter 11 Inches Less Than A Chessie 2-6-6-6.

    What an excellent video. I have a favour to ask though. My retirement project (or at least one of them) is to model this locomotive in live steam. I live in Australia and am not sure I am ever going to get to the US to take my own photos of the locomotive to enable me to design the model. Would it be possible to obtain a copy of the video so I can take still photos of some of the detail? Stopping the video on RUclips is always difficult to get the right spot but video editing software will allow frame by frame. All help is appreciated.

    Iirc the whistles on the cab forwards had a similar mechanism with a lever to control it

      Yes they did. It was an air operated viloco valve.

      Yes. 1642 suffered a boiler explosion due to crown sheet failure from low water in the 50s.
