    Raiders in 4K is a REVELATION over the 1080p. The HDR captures ALL the contrast range between the brightest highlights (like the sun behind Sallah as he paces concerned about his friend Indy above the map room) and the darkest night scenes (like the lightning storm over the Well of Souls). Gone are the bleached highlights and the artificial orange teal of the 1080p. It's now once again a PLEASURE to watch Raiders.

    To be honest, these are some of the greatest films of all time. Especially the first three. Raiders is on my list of perfect movies as well. So glad they did this! I saw them all in theaters back in the day. My mom took me to Raiders when my dad was away on military maneuvers. Such nostalgia and wonderful memories. I had a whip, my buddy had a BB pistol of Indy’s gun, I had a plastic skull painted silver. I told my mom I needed to make an idol. She was concerned until she figured out what I was up to. My pal Travis and I WERE Indiana Jones that summer. It really gets to my emotions when I think of it. Wonderful days…..

      @@adriannn3720 I love Crusade as well, but nothing brings that nostalgia like Raiders. Probably because it was first and the entire series hinges on the characters developed within it. It is simply a perfect movie.

    I sadly didn't get this 4K Set when it came out back in 2021, but I recently got in a Sale for a very good price. Absolutely love this new 4K restoration. I personally thought the 2012 Blu Ray set was the perfect version, but this new 2021 4K set is now my go to version when watching the Classic Trilogy. The packaging was a bit ordinary for me, I think the Blu Ray set has better packaging and beautiful artwork.
    Also, love your Shirt, Bro!

    I watched through the original trilogy in 4K over the past few days, and I'm going to give Crystal Skull another shot tonight. So far, I love how the 4K looks and sounds, and I think it was absolutely worth upgrading my Blu Ray set! Directly comparing screenshots of the Blu Ray to the 4K, I can see a noticeable difference and improvement in the 4K.

    The thing is, they are charging a premium price so the packaging should reflect that. That’s a $40-$50 set at best in that packaging. The 5 movie Rambo steel book set is a great example of premium packing at a good price. Also…where did you get that sweet Indy t-shirt?

    Hi Heath greetings from Australia great review on the 4K set l too love the first movie like most fans but I definitely think Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull is very underrated love the move to the 1950s and I do think it has the best opening of all of the movies. I know that is as controversial as when I announced to my friends that I thought Octopussy had the best opening of all of the Bond films but that’s another story 4K is amazing and thank you cheers Carl

    One minor comment: Not every special feature from the BDs was carried over. KOTCS had a two disc special edition BD (which one can get for almost nothing second hand) with a Bonus Disc of Special Features, that haven’t been on the last BD Box Set and are not included on the Bonus Disc of the new set. Keep up the good work and passion for cinema! Greetings from Germany! Christian

    Love these movies! They're pure imagination as you said. I like the film grain. It's the grit that makes these films at least somewhat realistic. I really love how Paramount went back to the film negatives and re-composited certain shots digitally to get rid of the matte lines (the angels passing behind Dietrich and Toht, Short Round's feet and the guys falling off the suspension bridge, the Messerchmidts).

  • @LockeTheCole

    I'd argue that if people cared so much about the packaging they'd buy the 90-120 dollar steelbook set. IMO, its all about the movies or TV shows.
    I'm just glad they're still releasing physical stuff at this point. It depresses me when something like the Orville comes out physically but is DVD only. The CGI work in that series honestly deserves better. Same with Mandalorian. Or it's available on Blu-ray but only in the UK or Japan (Cobra Kai and 24, for example). And now we're starting to see some shows just not even bother with physical at all. It's going to be a damn shame when physical movies/shows become nothing but relics or maybe collectibles like vinyl records and I wonder sometimes just how far removed from that we are.

    RAIDERS is why I fell in love with movies. I was 10 & 11 during the original theatrical run, seeing it no less than 21 times at the small town, one cinema movie house in Backwoods, Florida. The place was smelly, because the floor frequently had a thin layer of standing water. I didn't care. All my extra money went to the Saturday & Sunday matinee showings. TWENTY-ONE FRIGGIN' TIMES! It's the best movie ever made, and always takes me back to one of the few bright spots of an incredibly shitty childhood. Pure escapism. I've owned every incarnation, and while the 4k set looks phenomenal, I agree the packaging is garbage.

      The rights have transitioned to Disney. Paramount retains the rights for the original 4 movies, but Disney is the only company legally able to make newer movies and distribute them.
      So Paramount and Disney would need to come to some sort of an agreement as to how to split the revenue. And, Disney being a bunch of greedy fucks, I doubt it's going to happen.

    It just bothers me because other releases, like the Rambo set, were treated so much better as far as packaging. I bought the steelbook set. The box the steelbooks came in really flimsy and came to me damaged as well. Yep, the transfers are beautiful, and I have, through rep screenings, have seen all of them in theater on film, and these 4ks really hit the spot. No new bonus features is traguc. I also don't love some of the tweaking done to the special fx. I can't give em a pass on the cheap oackaging though. When something like IP MAN gets great packaging there's no reason Indy shouldn't be treated better. But yes, having the movies at this level of quality is what's the most important. That DVD set though...yeah it's so good.

I love Crystal Skull just as much as the others. Shia LeBeouf did a great job as Mutt, Indy met his son, and married Marion. And thankfully, the Nazis were gone (because we already had them twice) and the Soviets were the villains. It wasn’t the 1930s but the film was age and time appropriate for Harrison, and the 1950s worked for me in this context. Dial of Destiny on the other hand….

    Was lucky enough to have seen every Indy film in the cinema... The first two particularly had a lasting impact on me and are incredibly important films in my life which I ADORE, moreso even than Star Wars and Empire (neither of which I saw in the cinema, just Jedi). Of course I loved The Last Crusade too but I was bit older and it wasn't as impactful for me but still a favorite and one I am still very fond of. Temple of Doom is my absolute favourite though, I just love that film. I must have seen that and Raiders at least 50 or 60 times each over the years, maybe more! And I was a proud childhood member of the Weston's Wagon Wheels (a chocolate biscuit we have here in Australia) Indiana Jones Adventure Club!
    So I am really glad to hear these look and sound awesome in 4K. I just watched Total Recall in 4K and was amazed at how great it looked so can only imagine how great these look. Now of course this is the most important thing but it's a little bewildering that the packaging side of it seems so basic and slapped together with minimal thought and effort.
    For such an important franchise this seems incomprehensible to me and this feels like an opportunity lost. The UK Studio Canal 4k special edition of Total Recall I just mentioned is an amazing package and a shining example of how these things should be done.
    Having said that of course I will grab the Indy 4k set and look forward to watching it. Thanks for your advanced thoughts and review of the set .. another great vid as always Heath. Cheers!
    PS I also own these on VHS, DVD and Blu ray ! I also have the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles on DVD. That DVD set looks similar to mine but I think in my case the UK Blu ray set is the best physical media release of the Indy series. It was quite a nice box set.
    And yes I'd have paid 15-20 bucks extra for a better presentation. Absolutely!

I'm pretty sure I saw all 4 on the big screen, but I would've been a baby for the first. My mother was single until I was 10; so if she wanted to see a movie (and she often did) she took me along (usually to the drive-in). Thus, I saw a lot of the franchises like Indy, Star Wars, and James Bond well before I could understand them.

    Really enjoyed this review. I did see these in the theaters at first release. I am not fond of the packaging in this set. Really cheapened things up with the white and sparse colors. Artwork is very poor and does not give the feeling of the original movies like the bluray or DVD you have. I have a new issue of the Raiders Soundtrack on vinyl and the artwork is way better. Feels right. I would gladly pay $25 more for nicely done package. That said I rejoice in them getting it right where it counts most. I will be upgrading to 4k in a few weeks and this will be among the first of the 4k movies I watch. I am hoping that the beauty of the film in 4k will make totally forget that packaging.

    Not doubting the 4K editions are visually superior but 4K is not four times the resolution. It's twice the resolution with HDR.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  2 года назад +1

      4K has four times the pixels of Blu-ray (double height, double width). It's an easy way to address the people who consistently ask me "yeah, but how much better can 4K look than Blu-ray?" For those that already know, no explanation is necessary, but for the skeptics, it's an easy way to explain the increase in quality.

    I got the steelbook set. I love the steelbooks but man the cardboard is flimsy. I really really wish they had done something like the Rambo or LotR/Hobbit Trilogies where they put them in a tin. The downside to the tin is that Best Buy has apes in their shipping and they get dinged and banged up easy. And as far as I am concerned? The blu-ray set saying the complete adventures...is in fact complete. I have no faith in whatever Disney puts out. Licensing will likely prevent a compilation of all 5 too since Paramount has the rights to the first 4.

    As for film having grain, to be certain, yes. But there *is* a difference between "having grain" and looking like the final scene of "Alejandro" by Lady Gaga or a 5th-pass crap washed-out/blown-out foreign cam copy lol! Now, last but certainly not least, did you know there are--wait for it! INDIANA JONES PROSE NOVELS? YEP! I can leave you a list of links, in fact I shall return with said list shortly!
    P.S.: What do we think of the Young Indy Adventures?

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  3 года назад

      But here's where the argument begins: if that's the way the film looks upon development, is it altering the movie to remove said grain?
      As for the prose novels, I have the complete set! Thanks for shouting them out. Genesis Deluge is probably my favorite: Indy looking for Noah's Ark.
      I like Young Indy, and I'd love to see those on Blu-ray. I never bought the DVDs back in the day because they were a bit out of my price range.

    I wanted to split my comment just to make sure RUclips wouldn't eat a THESIS if something went wrong! Have to say, I've done a lot of research into Hindu goddesses for some comics-related stuff and I have truly come to respect Kali, but I suppose one could argue that was a *very* fringe cult? In what order would you say you'd rank the films? I am on the side of 1, 3, 4, 2 but the first two (1 & 3) are just head-and-shoulders above the rest.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  3 года назад

      I'd probably go 1, 3, 2, 4. But then there are days when I'd say 1, 2, 3, 4. The stuff with the Thugee and cult of Kali in Temple of Doom, was--I believe--mostly homage to two other movies 1) Gunga Din, and 2) Hammer's The Stranglers of Bombay. Both Star Wars and Indiana Jones are so steeped in serials and old pulp that it can be a lot of fun tracing the influences, which are right there on the surface, but a bit unknown to contemporary audiences.

    It’s a frikin’ cardboard box! What are you people doing to this set that you are going to destroy it in the first week or two? I got the steelbook version. The discs are protected in the steelbooks and when in the cardboard box it is just going to sit on a video shelf. I am fine with it. No, I would not want to pay up to $20 for a little bit thicker cardboard box. I am glad that it did not include the blu rays because I already have these films on blu ray and don’t want to pay for them twice. I am glad it included to digital version of the films. I doubt there will ever be a five movie set as Disney is making the new movie and Paramount has the rights to the first four. I will just buy the fifth film on 4K when it comes out to complete the set. I saw all of the movies in the theater when they came out. I knew several of the people that designed Indiana Jones costume. Unfortunately, most of them have passed away. I was visiting Disneyland with Peter Botwright who designed and made the leather jacket for Raiders. When we saw the Indiana Jones ride we had to ride it. When you came off the ride, it deposited you in The Adventure Outpost Store. They had Indiana Jones souvenirs for sale. We bought a couple t-shirts and such. When we got to the cashier, he said to Peter, “Sir, if you like that, then you may like this. We have the exact jacket worn in the movies!” He turned around and got a jacket off the rack behind him to show it to Peter. It was horrible. I think it was pleather! Peter had a look of horror on his face. Peter said, “No thanks. I have plenty of jackets.” When the salesman, not knowing he was talking to the man that made Indiana Jones’ jacket, turned to hang the jacket up, Peter looked at me and said, “Maybe that’s what I’ve been doing wrong all these years!”
