To y'all : the compatibility check on the beginning also involve the sample rate, be aware to import 44.100 files as it is the samplerate that works on the 404, otherwise you'll get slowed down or pitched sound. Thanks for the tutorial g !
thank you! this is going to make my workflow so much better. had the 404 for years but just got the compact flash reader and a nice roland 8 gig memory card. upgrade season! thanks again
This might help, I put sounds on my card, then couldn't pull anything up when I wanted to sample anything. Also, when I try to sample from my phone, I can't seem to record anything. I have no clue what I'm doing lol help please?
Everything was working until I tried to import then it would say EnP meaning "empty", but the files were there. So I re-formatted the card, then sent the files back to the root and now it imports just fine. Hope this helps others.
How do you take files off the compact flash card from the sp back into the computer? Trying to take the file ive imported on back off but now with the rolands effects added.
Thanks a lot! Do you know a way to scroll through the samples on the flash card? For example I got 100 kickdrums on the flash card and I want to try the first, the second etc. on one pad. In other words: Is there a way to load samples from the card without exchanging them all?
pyjama bay I have been researching ways to select different samples, but I haven’t found a solution to that issue yet. It seems we are limited to the alphabetic order of our files on the card in relation to banks C through J. I will keep you posted if I find out more!
Do they load in order from how they are on the computer file? Like does the 1c load from the top file on your computer and so on? Like 1c, top file, 2c, the file below the top file, in that order?
Nathan Coleman that’s exactly right. I’m believe it prioritizes it alphabetically/alphanumerically. I’ve had this machine for a year and I’m still learning some of these nuances and limits. Hope the video helped!
hey i have a question, everytime i want to record the samples from the card to the machine, i do exactly the same u are doing and finallz when i press REC, appears a code in the screen saying: U n 5, u know why, is maybe the card not compatible with the sampler??
@@dj_balans Do you know how to change the bit rate and sample rate? I am also getting the UnS message when I try to import Wav samples from my computer onto the CF card

It depends on which signals you are sampling. I would throw samples on a compact flash card and load them into the SP-404 at the proper bpm. After you load each sound or loop into a corresponding bank you can combine your samples to create layers for each bank and then switching between them should be seamless depending on how you loop it.
@@JeffAlberts91 I have a bunch of beats on my 128mb card but when i go to import them to a bank it only loads 3 of them. They aren't long either only about 2 minutes and the biggest sized file is 15mb

Thank you for this video. Is it also possible to directly copy on the computer the files into the right bank / pad (without need to do the internal importing procedure on the SP-404A?) 1. open the folder ROLAND/SP-404A/SMPL 2. copy / exchange the files according to the file name logic (A0000001.WAV A0000002.WAV : A0000012.WAV B0000001.WAV : J0000012.WAV) [see manual for this filename logic] Would be nice if this worked like this because then there is no need to do the internal importing procedure. Or is there other information treated as well with the internal importing procedure (in addition to just copy-pasting the wav files to the respective internal bank / pads)? Thanks for this, it will help a lot! Thanks!
Great tutorial! Do you know if once the files have been successfully been imported, can you then remove the source files from the root folder of the card to free up space?
litewrite Thanks for watching! I don’t believe so, unfortunately. Banks C through J are representative of the card space/data, so I would not remove those sounds from the original card without placing those sounds on banks A or B. Hope this helped!
On SX model it moves original files by default, its different shortcut (Func+3) and there is an import folder on the SD card, so samples do not go on the root of the card...
@@JeffAlberts91 he meant in the root folder of the card, and yes, you can delete the original archives you put there once you imported them, even in C - J banks
Hi everyone. Do you know if there is some reliable app for organizing samples, as the Sample wave converter for the SP 404 SX? Or, is it possible to define specific file names on file system in order to know which pad will contain a certain sample? Thanks!
Thx Jeff , great video ! i have some problem anyway, probly you or somebody else encountered. So i was importing some loops 3-6 sec long, and SP stops importing after 5th pad , saying "FUL". The CF i formatted , so its clean and its 1Gb, the files themselves all together are just 5 Mb. If I check the remaining time it says 380 minutes left. I tried to resample to different pads and banks , as well on A and B , still it stops with the same message. Any ideas?

mago exactly! Sometimes those pitched down samples can make for good accidental layers :)

What do I do if it doesn’t load all my samples into the banks? It loads about 7 and that’s about it even though I have way more samples in the folder
i would go back and check the bitrate of each sample and make sure it's 16 bit. otherwise you should refer to the manual if that's still not working.
Old video but very helpful thanks bro
