We're delighted to bring you a series debut featuring the wonderfully imaginative producer and engineer Illangelo! Hosted at OCL studios in Alberta, this video instamment takes you on a deep dive into the creative process behind 'Alone Again', the opening track of critically-acclaimed album 'After Hours' by The Weeknd. In great detail, Illangelo reveals the software and methods he used to build the lush soundscapes, pristine vocals, and punchy low end heard on this immersive mix. With two different Ableton Live sessions, he shares the elaborate signal chain applied to Abel's vocal, his broad palette of effects, the master buss treatment, and so much more. Aside from demonstrating an array of mix techniques, Illangelo discusses his philosophy of “painting” with sound and imparts his vocal tracking workflow!

Pls make another song with him
if you posted and pinned your pinned comment when the video came out you wouldve made so much money!!! bruh bad marketing move
It’s so strange to me that producers don’t get the type of appreciation behind the song, than as the actual performer. This guys is just a pure mastermind
They often dont want it. They make their Money and thats enough. No need for fame. And inside the Scene they get their recoginition i guess :)
@@mindus5760 Yes, yes one of my friends explained exactly the same to me totally agree, but it is awsome to see how creative they are.
@@mindus5760 I check out your stuff also pretty good stuf you are making, I am also working on musice, although I just started out
Yea its a constant struggle to get credit from some egotistical artists for sure. Ive lost lots of money
I'm a huge Weeknd fan, and yea... They definitely deserve a lot more credit, I agree.
The preciseness of how this guy pronounces words is incredible
It's what happens whe you raised in Canada
Even give some goosebumps
There was this old interview of him like 5 yrs ago and he sounded very cute for some reason. Just search up illangelo interview I forgot wat the title was called
He has some mixing plugins in his voice
He talks like a mafioso in a movie, lol
so much respect for this guy!!!
hey
agree seems like a sick ass producer
legend. crazy how much this guy has worked with The Weeknd for actually a decade now and on so many absolute classic masterpiece albums and songs, but not only The Weeknd also Drake, Post Malone, Travis Scott etc... so so sooo much respect

Foda de mais 🤟🏾🤟🏾🇧🇷
Love that advice that we should mix like we're inside the song and not just by looking at it but listening. That changes whole perspective.
yeah as a producer it can be easy to get too technical sometimes and forget about the musicality of it all
yeah thats the whole point! you know it but you cannot see it literally, it just make things a lot of easier, specially when you dont know if your sounds or instruments are right
I once had a session with a known mixing engineer and he explained this to me.... followed by saying - "this is why I use actual mixing console and not using my mouse to move the knobs on the screen".... because then he doesn't "look at the mix" - he "feels it" in his fingers as he creates the changes he wants to hear.
@@Dramatello Yeah, that's something I didn't understand before I started producing myself. I was asking myself why these mix engineers have all these huge studios filled with big mixers with millions of knobs and then when I started struggling to tweak every sound then I knew that analog mixers are definitely better and you can be more precise with them.
@@4DMIIR it all comes down to preference at the end of the day. Illangelo has a diamond record on his books and he has never touched a mixing console. All in the box. So it’s all about what you are comfortable with.
The words he says at 2:01, its just so fucking true, and thats why mainstream all sounds the same
As a metal guy I wanted to slam this video, but those words are very true.
@@Questioneverythingx why the slamming though

Because at first, “as a metal guy”, it would be easy to dismiss this individual before hearing him out. Not that hard to figure out.
beat breakdowns like this should be at least 10mins long
The actual video is divided in 6 parts of 20 minutes each :) It’s honestly the best thing I’ve ever watched.
@@theliovidal4394 Do you learn quite a bit from what Illangelo does? Is there any tips he gives and stuff?
Thats what beat makers do that just only make beats. This guy is an acutal real Producer thats breaking down the entire sing not just a beat. He's got another part for the Vocal Production. Producers produce songs, beat makers only just make beats.
@@theliovidal4394 is it on their website or something?
@@MrCamwilliams7 this is Mix with the Masters....full videos are paid content. Check the homepage for endless material..
Every beat on this album is like Heaven. Baffled on how amazing After Hours was
man! you did something different , absolute genius.
Bro this songs a masterpiece sonically
not the second half
@@perzonne6302 u won't experience the greatness of second half if first half isn't that groovy
@@perzonne6302 if anything the 2nd half impressed me more. truly a technical masterpiece
@@chriscarelli4643 the "heys" and claps are lame af and so 2014
@@perzonne6302 i think the heys add more immersion, the snares aren’t even claps. This is meant to sound nostalgic
That full album is incredibly produced.
Alone Again was on repeat when the album released.
this producer is a little bit underrated, he deserves way more recognition...
Yeah. He's worked with Abel for 10 years and produced some of his biggest hits
He is beloved in the XO circles
Belive me I've been recognizing him for a long time 😂
2:10 he just described his production on every Weeknd album. After Hours definitely resonates and has a feeling to it. Aren’t many artists/producers that can actually pull you into the music like Weeknd and illangelo do
This guy is a genius
istfg
ya he produced the hills
Best song off After Hours. Amazing guy
This might just be The Weeknds best intro and he has a bunch of great intros. This one truly transcends you
It’s great but doesn’t beat Afterhours
That cold spaced out sound of that album became a sonic signature for the North.
Calgary ain't even cold as far as Canada goes.
The fact that he was able to achieve such a massive sound from 39 total tracks is insane.....Mind blowing
in ableton track amounts mean jack, it's incredibly streamlined and customisable. I often have 5-6 synths on a single track, and someone more advanced than me prob is way beyond that.
@@1998Cebola so you would say 39 groups within maybe 90 or 100 individual tracks?
A four track mix can sound huge if the tracks are well performed, recorded and mixed well.
@@WillyJunior know any tunes or tunes you have created that follow this rule and sound great. Thanks!
@@WillyJunior Daft Punk case in point
i always thought the weeknd made his songs in outerspace, not in a DAW...
lmao yes they are so well written and produced, abel and his entire team and his producers have some insane talent
@@8kcw it's because of the reverb in his songs
@@FHERNAN33 no that's to make your vocals sound more wide
@@ddlegend thats why they sound spacy

The vocalist and vocals totally equilibrate the sound, so without the vocals its not much, and vice versa. Amazing how 1+1 equals almost infinity. Production and writing at its best is magical.
It’s still pretty crap though.
@@officialWWM crap? What the hell are u talking about ?
@@WillyJunior thanks. I will :) At least I’m making something!
The only thing I don't like is the fake Vibratos. It's too obvious and new singers needs to learn vocal techniques and learn how to sing better using natural vibratos. The soul is lacking.
@@eman0828 Weeknd uses a lot of vibrato... Okay I get that. You don't like it ... That's okay everybody have own taste, but that IS NOT FAKE vibrato.
The mixer console is a good decoration behind the laptop...
Alot of consoles are just used for tracking, specifically the preamps. You'll rarely see people actually mix on them with any more functionality than summing.
Allllllll over ATL, LA and the world, those consoles are for the gram only.
@@aaronglass890 yes! That's why you don't need to go to a tracking studio when you mix in the box!! (Except for the video... )
@@aaronglass890 Not so much. The large format console is pretty much unnecessary as many studios around the world are ditching the middle man console since most records are recorded through analog outboard Pre amps esp the Neve 1073 an industry standard. But yes its true that the large format consoles are phasing out. Argosy Console is starting to take over the larger foot print desk that houses outboard and smaller cut down consoles for Hybrid Mixing and recording as the new industry standard. The Neve Genius is nothing more than a Hybrid mixing console as consoles are getting smaller and smaller. Dave Pensado went from mixing on an SSL now mostly in the box that owns an Argosy Dual 15 with outboard.
@@aaronglass890 The tracking was done with an Apollo Twin...
the whole album is an emmersive journey, love how that was a key approach in the mixing process🙌🏼
Hell of a song to start a great album.
My absolute favorite track of the album. It's brilliant.
Everything he described is exactly what I felt when I first listened to this song. Had me like woah
Can’t wait to watch this whole thing
yo bro cool to see u there wtf, this dude is crazy good at what he does
This guy, is a mastermind! Too underrated, not anybody can understand the language of his music.
This is one of my favorite instrumentations
This song is the goat, everything about it is enchanting. You and Abel create much more than just an album or song it’s impressive
This is one of the best masterclasses I've seen. Ilangelo is very open minded and attentive to detail. I really enjoyed watching it and learned a lot of interesting things.
I just realised how important is mixing the beats huge respect for this guy
Whenever I hear 'conversation' in music production, I'm sold.
The man behind some of The Weeknd’s work. I’m telling you this man is universes ahead of his time
illangelo been working with the weeknd since the mixtape days. he the goat
In my eyes, he’s the greatest producer I’ve encountered in this lifetime.
I feel the same
the attention to details that illangelo puts into tracks is just unparalleled. There's a stream on youtube where he just tweaks the most minute of the details for half an hour straight, at the outro part of the weeknd song "too late". On a different plane of existence
Mike Dean goat
so you're about 13 years old?
aye
BRUH WE NEED A LONGER VERSION OF THIS. THIS IS GOOD STUFF!
Definitely gorgeous production. Moved me the second I heard it.
Life-changing production. This track is on repeat daily. Thanks Illangelo/Weeknd and crew!
So he is the guy behind the album I’m so addicted with at first listen and actually inspired me to produce music like this because it breaks all the rules of how you make music and sounded different but so damnnnnn amazing and captivating.

favorite song of the album,
thank you, illangelo, for this work of arte!
This guy is a master🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Doesn't suprise me that he puts this much thought into his work, trilogy was no accident
Loved watching this because Alone Again is hands down one of my favorite songs of all time.
Love the production on this album 😍 and nice to see Ableton for a change!!
need more of this from illangelo
I feel so good when i see such a cool dude using the same tools that i have. Wish i had the rest of the package.
You’ll get there brother! One day at a time ✌🏻
illangelo is the most underrated producer in the game
True
I wouldn’t call a guy that works with the weeknd underrated

Great to see him using Ableton and the plugins I have been using for a long time. Would love to see more of these and Illangelo's work flow.

this song is one of those that you have to close your eyes to listen to bc it really does take you into a completely different world. such an amazing job
This is the one song I cannot turn up loud enough... dude incredible production!
My favorite song on the entire album
We need an extended version of this!!!
This song/instrumental is so insane. Best on the album, going to be insane live.
💯 I heard this song LIVE in 2022, and I cried as soon as he came on singing this song😢😢 🔥🤌💯
I WISH THIS WAS LONGER
changing the pitch of the delay is a useful trick, need to try that!
This man brought a big chunk of the weeknds discography to life and for that im grateful
Illangelo is my favorite producer/engineer! Loved this
Such a goat. He’s my n1 inspiration fr
The whole after hours album is mixed very well.
Been producing music for over 45 years and I have no idea what he's talking about. more power to him. Roll on playa!
Yeah imma need more after hours breakdowns for sure this video is dope
When i first started making music I thought it was because of Abel, but no. It was because of Illangelo. Master at work.
this song is legendary
production quality on this album is through the roof what a sick ass job illangelo did in combination with wknd's voice, man what a trip
This song deserves an official music video!!!!
F**king incredible! What a vibe
0:33 That place looks just soo...peaceful. Like an art from a story book.
AAAAAHHH I LOVE THIS SONG SO COOL SEEING IT BEING PRODUCED
We need more such videos with indepth breakdowns
Alone again is my favorite song on the album
I love you. This song is perfect!!! I’m so happy to see Canada represent!
as a classical musician this is one of my favorite songs from him because it’s so symphonic and complex rather than repetitive.
Finally we needed this

Illangelo is always in his own lane truly creative individual.
This was my most listened to song on Spotify in 2020. Pretty obvious why... 🥰
"producing & mixing" is a phrase I like to see
This song and the album as a whole are so lush and so well produced! (I mean so are the others, from The Weeknd/Illangelo) Really takes you somewhere else!
