We are doing TGTB LA (for this year prob our last) but I’m not having my
Older kids do their writing. I was planning on starting them on Writing & Rhetoric but now I’m wondering if Writing With Ease would be a better option? Which would you recommend if you felt like a kid needed to start at the beginning for learning how to write? ETA we are CM leaning, but I do feel like I need a little more hand holding/structure than CM LA provides.

I definitely think Writing with Ease is a better place to start. Writing & Rhetoric teaches writing styles and techniques, while Writing with Ease helps beginner writers simply structure their thoughts into simple sentences and paragraphs.

Thanks for sharing! I'd love to see a flip through of Writing with Ease and Writing & Rhetoric. Both look so good!

Would you say Writing with Ease includes grammar?

No it does not teach grammar, as in the parts of speech (nouns, verbs, etc) but it does teach how to write a well structured sentence and how to organize your ideas in writing.

Does the Alveary not work on the skills that you shared about? I am signed up for 2024/2025 school year so I don’t have access yet.

The Alveary applies Charlotte Mason’s methods to Language Arts. Grammar doesn’t start until Grade 4, but where they start grammar (using MCT) is too basic for my daughter who started formal grammar in grade 1. They also don’t use a formal writing curriculum until the high school grades. Writing (in Charlotte Mason’s method) is learned through reading literature, narration, and practicing writing composition, but they don’t follow a formal curriculum with lesson plans. While I do believe in CM methods, and that students will develop good writing skills over time, I had already introduced a more classical approach to grammar and writing skills with my kids before starting the Alveary. I have found my kids have thrived using these books I’ve recommended, so rather than throw it all away and start a whole new approach, I’ve decided to continue using them. Language Arts (called English) in the Alveary is only one component of their program. Their focus in that subject in the younger years is reading and penmanship. Narration and composition are incorporated in every single subject. I hope that makes sense!

Is the Ordinary Parents guide a consumable book? Or can I ordered a used one with no issue?

Good question! It is non-consumable. A used one would be perfectly fine! 😊

@@littlebitsofbliss thank you! None of the descriptions I found of it explicitly said either way! I’m excited to try your recommendations, as piecing together LA by myself has not been fun!
