The Journey of Restoring A Brutalist Home (House Tour)

- Culminating the journey of restoring a brutalist house, Chambers House is a considered, functional family home. Originally designed by former owner and Brisbane architect Rodney Chambers, Chambers House is a brutalist building, heritage listed for its use of concrete and blockwork. Instrumental in defining the architectural context of the Brisbane suburb of Teneriffe Hill, Chambers House celebrates the balance between light and dark, heavy and soft.
When Shaun Lockyer and Jen Negline of Shaun Lockyer Architects embarked on the journey of restoring a significant architectural element of the Brisbane landscape, the original floorplan had virtually no defined rooms. “We often light-heartedly joke that we started with a zero bedroom house and we now how have a four bedroom house,” says Shaun Lockyer, Director of Shaun Lockyer Architects, “but all of that way done within a very, very small extension.”
Distinct in its crafted, functionalist and brutalist design, the raw materials used are offset by the sensitivity of the lush, green landscape that grounds Chambers House in its suburban environment. The landscape design by Steven Clegg Design is strategic in its ability to soften the home’s bold and heavy form, connecting the brutalist architecture to the softer streetscape.
The house, which sits back from the street, comes together through a series of spaces and thresholds. Its location, predominately north facing, allows the interior to be washed with gentle light, foreshadowing the space and movement of an otherwise unyielding structure. The modernist approach sees space utilised in a way that commemorates sequenced movement - compression and release, journey and discovery. The exposed blockwork juxtaposes the delicate glass windows, further cementing the continual dance between materials. This relationship extends to the coolness of the concrete, the warmth of the timber and the light interior spaces.
The renovation, restoration and addition to the original house, collaboratively built with Solido Builders, was a considered endeavour that prioritised both the landscape design and responding to the urban context. Shaun Lockyer and Jen Negline of Shaun Lockyer Architects understood the significance of the house as an entire environment, rather than just a building alone. As a result of this approach, Chambers House still stands as a testament to Rodney Chambers and his vision, reinforcing the home’s status as a brutalist icon of Australian residential architecture.

There is strength in Brutalist design that I love, and to see this home get the combined treatment of light, greenery, and earthy wood makes it a sanctuary of solace for the right person.
Idk where this channel always finds these beautiful houses. Just stunning architecture captured so perfectly
I’ve watched this presentation at least a dozen times and have been moved each time. How can concrete block feel so incredibly warm and inviting. There is magic here.
The art and landscaping make this home feel alive. Stunning.
The solid, basic materials don't stunt the dynamic feeling you get from this house. Very well done.
Honestly keep this up. This video was beautiful. Such an amazing home, truly a dream home to live in! Well done to the architect. Love your work guys
Thank you Samuel, much appreciated!
I'm truly in love with the cinematic attention given to these special homes. I can only aspire to this level of refinement. Please post the music you use! I'd love to know. 😁
This was reminiscent of "I'm Not In Love" by 10CC-- like it kept wanting to break into it, but never quite got there. Still very compelling.
So wonderful to see modernist architecture being considered through a heritage lens.
Really extraordinary... brutalism never felt so delicate and inviting...
This house is so very close to what I consider a dream house. Brutalist style is one of my 2-3 fave styles and I find it very soothing. The robustness of it gives me the comfort and freedom to be myself and to not have to feel like I have to 'walk on the eggshells'. Thank you for uploading, this was a treat!
I want to live here-- SO BAD. As I watch these, listening to the thought process, and the level of detail that goes into creating these places (not to mention the materials and furnishings), I'm just blown away. No wonder a regular person can't afford an architect-designed home... I do what I can with decorating, but there's nothing like having a backdrop like this to start from. I can dream...
Wow, this is awesome. So good to see Rodney Chambers' work on here! Very tastefully renovated.
We agree!
The eloquence with which you Aussie architects describe buildings is most impressive, I can't imagine what a dinner party with you all must be like lol.
Pretty sure the guy talking is a kiwi though
@@Josh_009 he's South African
@@Keepinitreel108 sweet, was pretty sure he wasn't Aussie :) I just found it funny with this comment though haha
@@Josh_009 yeah I can see how it can be confusing because they all share some similarities in pronunciation and expression!👍🏽
Surprisingly, this brutalist house is not as trying-to-kill me as most brutalist houses do. Awesome vid, keep it up guys!!!
Glad you enjoyed it Gavin!
Indeed! Whoever designed this house, truly, has an eye for beauty! Taste is classy as it is exquisite and elegant. I adore this house--a work of art!
Love Shaun's enthusiasm. What a great project!
Brutalist homes always make me wonder what it looks like in the inside. Bold and hard on the outside, but warm, safe and unique on the inside.
I love brutalist architecture though many don't, this house is amazing.
It's truly a beautiful house!
2:40 - Oh, a Louis Poulsen pendant. My absolutely favorite pendant. It looks amazing in this space.
Absolutely exquisite! Brutalism can often feel intimidating yet this house feels warm and Zen-like...it invites contemplation! A nice change from the over-glazed white cubes/glass boxes (sic). Congratulations on this project!
home itself is stunning but the video is the next level. I can't believe I watch this channel for free
Glad you enjoy it!
A brutalist house that actually feels like a home. Beautiful
Beautiful iconic brutalist home - such a unique design that blends into its context and surroundings through natural light, materials and greenery!
Couldn't agree more!
@@TheLocalProject so my head is over, i can't see or read more... now i know a house like that is brutalist. Brutalist i never knew before that it's what i need.
Interior and Exterior are very luxurious, I love it ❤️
I absolutely love this one. I think I just found our dream home. If castles went modern, this is it! Completely extraordinary!
Absoulutely beautiful video and narration. The photography of this shoot elevates this house to the next level. Bravo
I love it, so modern looking. You've down a great job to make it contemporary
Really enjoyed this property. The dark materials used for the interior are amazing and homey!
Brutalism meets Bris-Vegas! Another beautiful video from The Local Project 💭
Love the house, style, cinematography, and that doggo making a cameo :)!
-Much Love, from Pakistan!
superb production! camera work, colors are captivating.in my opinion you managed to convey the overall feel of the place through the digital lense. narrative blends quite well with the motion picture. and music score is airy i would say. great points made to learn from.
thank you very much.
I really wait up the whole week for The Local Project video! I am in love with the work you do, please keep it up!
Beautiful selection of greenery.
I like Shaun's accent, a slight variation within Australian vernacular, but I hear a hint of South African (?).
Beautiful house, rightfully designed!
entirely south african, no?
Yes! I was going to change my response actually, because after thinking about it, I realized maybe his accent is entirely S.African. And, sure enough, I looked up his bio, he IS from S.Africa and migrated to Aus some years ago. I mean, it's not an accent that I hear often, so I wasnt sure at first.
I love listening to people's accents and dialects and languages.... that and architecture...! And I love what he did with this house...
Light floods in, wonderful.
Wonderful elements
I love architecture
Beautiful!
Very interesting...beautiful
Another beautifully shot video TLP, absolutely killing 2021 🔥
Their production quality is really top notch, I always look forward to when a new video comes out

Wow! Best one yet - love it
Glad you think so!
This guy is clearly a casual, great work TLP!
Amazing! Love it!
So glad!
This is amazing...one of the best house designs ive seen here!
The intertwining of the house with nature is beautiful until i remember that this is in Australia.
At any instant have you ever considered changing the name of the channel to The Wawaussie Project instead? Gosh, 'cos you just got me with my jaw dropped at every single video... Simply phenomenal! 🤩👌🏽😍
Thank you channel .
Such considered design and beautiful execution!
i wish we can see the entirity of the house through cinematic house tour instead of clips showing parts of the house. i would love to fully be immersed with all these unique architechture and its interior design while also enjoying the very informational narration
This channel is therapeutic
Incredible!
Beautiful
Stunning home. Thank you.
Smart unique design home!
Thanks Local Project 😎
Beautifully done
Totally off the topic, but can you guys please share your playlist of the background music or the source of your BG music (at least for this video). The music really sets the tone of your videos and goes well with the content. Btw, love your videos.
Beautiful homes townstoosirji
Lovely.
It's a wonderful house and it's been treated so well in the restoration :0)
Beautiful inspiring home... Great content channel...
Wow what a beautiful home. Love these TLP videos. What video is coming next?
Another VERY special project is up next - keep an eye out for it this Friday! 🙂
So beautiful 😍
Love this
its so amazing🤩🤩
wow.. amazing
Nice speech! Bravo
the view from the street is so hard, need to know the landscaping secrets
every single project is my dream house
nice restore
Amazing !!
beautiful。。。
Really never liked brutalist architecture like The University of Sydney bio building but this is pretty awesome
It took me watching a bunch of youtube clips about The Barbican and working in a couple of stylish brutalist-era hospitals to make me see the beauty in the juxtaposition of hard 20th century modernists lines, sculptured light pockets and greenery. I used to hate brutalism but now I'm a massive fan
my another therapy session
It's a good house. Better than good.
...it is somewhat strange to describe this serene balanced atmosphere as brutalist, when as a matter of fact it is all made from simple honest material, natural in their authenticity and configured in a very calculated yet humane way... :)
Thanks for the thoughts and insight. The brutalist part of the home is described in the heritage citation and through insight of the original architect, Rodney Chambers (Not my opinion). Notwithstanding while it may not present as what one might usually describe as brutalist, by brisbane standards it is deemed as an exemplar of this architectural tenant. 🙏🏽
I'm truly amazed by this project.
Would it be acceptable for me to create some renders of it and share them on Behance?
If you don't have any objections, I'd appreciate it if you could provide me with credits or information I should include when posting it there. Thanks!
Impressive. I’d love to have seen the floor plan.
If all that timber framing was original then it wasn't all that Brutal. The projecting framing and vertical posts are terrific.
Good
nice video and beautiful shots but what i would prefer to see is a detailed walk around of the house from the developer like enes yilmazer does and not just random 10 second shots
Well, what is there to say about this unique experience. Maybe that the art work is as deserving of attention as the architecture. Even if I am not sure about the music (something that would make me jump off pretty quickly) I could stand it to the end. Don't know why ppl insist in sound back ground. IT IS NOT NECESSARY!!!!
Would love to see this done with Hempcrete or sea stone (sea shell cement)
QUERO UMA DESSAS NO 🇧🇷🤗🌻
what a dream. I would love to see the floor plan of this home.
What music did you use in this video? ? It's amazing
🖤
Looks Cold N Comfort.
So whats the process thats being followed in order to make construction blocks so good? do they apply some kind of "polishing" material? is It the cement? both? trivago?
nice
wow
Grey concrete blocks? In what world would this be in any way attractive? Otherwise neat. Unusual.
Can you share brutalism concept details pls
Even with the fantastic restoration, I'd still feel uncomfortable living in concrete blocks.
any link to the floor plan or other drawings?
At the second 8th of the video there are 4 trees, what kind of trees are those, anyone? Thanks!!!
Picking up a South African accent somewhere there.
Definitely. Durban perhaps?
Can I share on fb?
Can someone tell me how do they manage water leaks with these block walls?
@@xoxoops lol that's funny. But I'm pretty serious though, I'm really curious.
Patina elevates the dirt on the concrete that people in American spend hours cleaning.
