    About me (the guy behind the cryptic three T's):
    my name is Tom David Frey. I'm half Swiss and half German and have lived in many fantastic places, from the United States to Israel. Somehow cool.
    My age? Well, it rapidly changes. But you can surely do the math: I was born in 1992, somewhere in a small town in mid-Rhineland-Palatinate.
    Now the relevant things you came here for: I have a strong passion for cameras and drones. I got my first Sony at the age of six and started my own business when I turned 18 (don't ever let people tell you that you will not succeed; Live your dreams!).
    Nowadays, I'm shooting videos in many countries. I have private clients as well as major companies I'm working with, f.e. Netflix. And everyone knows that one, right?
    But, more importantly, I love to fly and shoot (video) with my drones. I've flown in so many countries already (China, Switzerland, the USA, Spain, Iceland, Israel, Germany, and plenty more) and love to explore the world from above in all its beauty.
    That's why my main business is all about drones. I capture the world from above. And I share my experiences, knowledge, and the best new inventions with you.
    Drones and cameras excite me so much that I put a lot of time and hard work into creating my videos. And I love that you guys appreciate them!
    Now, join me on my adventures and subscribe to my channel.
    Stay tuned and fly safe!
    --------------------
    The fine print quickly summed up 💻
    Some of the links above are so named "affiliate links". By using those, I can get a small provision for purchases you guys make. That way, I can stay true to you because I don't need companies to pay me for creating videos. I'm independent and loyal to you - the best audience!
    Therefore, if you purchase your gear through my links, I can keep up the honest work. 👏
    The videos on my channel are property of Tom David Frey. Duplicating and re-uploading them without my written permission is prohibited. Sorry, guys, but that's necessary. I work hard on my content and somehow need to make a living. Maybe instead share my videos, but spreading the link or embedding them to your websites or forums. But please, don't steal my work. 😎
    By law, I have to mark my video as a "commercial." I herewith do so: this video is a commercial. Though I promise to be honest to you, my audience, all of the time. I like nothing less than fake reviews and videos that spread half-truths just for the financial gain of someone. I believe that being honest to you is much worthier in the long run than make quick money by spreading fake information. Truth rules! Don't you believe me? I already had to give up on two promising cooperations because the companies found my videos to be too honest. I call that my occupational risk. 🦾

    Toms Tech Time , you really should state that you got the unit free for review. This is a re-imagining of the CrystalSky, about the same price (£600). The downside is you only get one SD slot with the controller. To say it works at -20 might be true, but your battery performance will suffer in the cold, it's only a LiPo after all and it needs those extra milliamps to power a 1000 NIT screen.
    I bought a CrystalSky and am interested to see if DJI continue to support it with upgrades or if this takes over - and potential buyers should be interested too, because if they don't then the chances are this controller will be out dated in 12 months. The upside to the CrystalSky is that you can use it with more than just the Mavic 2, handy for those of us who have to pay for our equipment.

    Thanks for the review, though a couple points to consider. Not sure about your objectivity, seems very slanted towards a DJI marketing video, and 2) Would've been nice to see more of a comparison of the brightness of the screen and size, since that is the number 1 selling point.

    They should have made the controller compatible with all their drones. . . . now that would be worth the money.

    • @TomsTechTime
      @TomsTechTime  5 лет назад +5

      Yes, that's true. I wish it was compatible with all of them.
      But because different drones use different transmission technologies (from WiFi to Lightbridge to OcuSync to OcuSync 2.0) that's probably hard to do.
      But for owners of a Mavic 2 this controller is a big step forward and super useful!

      Tom's Tech Time Occusync 2.0 is backwards compatible with Occusync 1.0 on a hardware level, adding WiFi isn’t a big deal and would have been very cheap, could have either put a physical switch on the side to switched the Radio from SDR based (Occusync) to WiFi based. As for Lightbridge I understand them not adding that, DJI will phase out Lightbridge in favor for Occusync.
      Also Occusync is cheap to build as it is SDR based and can use off the shelf parts with custom firmware and software, Infact probably as cheap to make and validate as WiFi.
      Lightbridge was genuinely expensive as it was a completely in house solution and DjI even custom rolled hardware for it, that’s one of the big reasons why everything will soon be Occusync or WiFi...cost effective
      DJI is obviously doing this intentionally for reasons of greed I think. They pretend not compatible but any hardware hacker knows after tearing it apart that it is.

    • @Honeypot-x9s
      @Honeypot-x9s 5 лет назад +1

      Photomind absolutely. I can see 2 versions of the future..
      1. All DjI Drones have Occusync variants (smaller drones mate have a Occusync Air/Lite system)
      2. All drones being Occusync based for higher end or and WiFi for midranged and lower end.
      Sad reality is All Occusync is is SDR based system (Software Defined Radio) so it’s very cheap to make make and validate, probably similar to using WiFi. Baffles me why DjI hasn’t started pushing all drones to Occusync tech. The phase out from Lightbridge began about 2 years go...

    YES, probably the industry professionals will buy this, cause after all it could be a write off for them and they would get more use out of it.. HOWEVER, at this price tag, that's all who would be buying it! I think if the price tag was around $350- $400, DJI might have a better chance on selling many more to the drone hobbyists. Too Expensive and most of us will probably just stick with our phones or tablets. Unless of course if you just have $649 laying around and can't think of another way to use the money to spend on it. I'll stick to the iPhone XS for now.

    I have purchased this controller a while back. Although I love it and use it often, it has a fatal flaw. The DJI Go4 app crashes frequently when the drone is in flight and recording. I have read many reviews and watched many videos on how to fix it and nothing corrects this problem, including many email and file exchanges with DJI.
    A very sad story for such an expensive device.

    If the app locks up or crashes, can you reboot the screen without shutting off the remote? The Phantom 4 Pro + has this problem. If your Android crashes, you must reboot the entire controller mid-flight. This forces your Phantom to RTH while you reboot. Hopefully, this controller allows you to reboot your Android but STILL allow you to control your aircraft during this reboot.

    When I got mine last week there wasn't a power adaptor. DJI told me they don't include it. It seems when you pay this much for a Smart Controller you could at least put in a $5.00 power adaptor wouldn't you ?

    Thanks for the video, Tom. I’m going to pass, though. The small Crystal Sky is $100 (USD) cheaper.. which I could use for another battery. Plus, I’m a firm believer that your screen should be higher than the controls and not the other way around. After all, your eyes are above your hands so it’s more natural. 😐. Why does the smart remote control turn on when it's turned on but turns off and won't turn on?

    I do not see anything different than an iPad mini 4 that is held in place by the controller for my Mavic Pro. I then disconnect it when I get home & use the iPad to edit my footage - while laying down sometimes.

    What I would like to know if there is a better connection to the drone. Living in a large city, I constantly get MAG INTERFERNCE or I need to "re calibrate my drone. Sometimes I'm in LOS and
    the drone is only 400 feet away and I lose connection. Before I pop out 749 dollars, that is important to me.
    The bright screen would be so helpful though, I'm tiered of turning away from the sun when I'm supposed to be facing my drone at times. Also, I curios about the antenna's. If you look at the DJI controller that comes with the MAVIC 2, if the drone is over head, the manual says to lay the antennas flat. If I don't, I lose connection directly over my head which is always hit or miss. I wish the controller DJI gives you would have some consistency in keeping a good connection when I'm in clear LOS and I'm not that far. I noticed this controller is a bit more limited as it can't fold over the controller, just straight up.

    Hi Tom, you make really good videos, clear and easy to understand so people can build their knowledge. I wonder if I could ask you a question about the Smart Controller, linked to maps. When I got my first drone it was a Spark, I used iOS and Litchi, with Google Maps. Now I have upgraded to a Mavic Zoom and have a Smart controller, I’m super happy with everything apart from one thing, the Maps. When I’m in the DJI go4 app to do waypoints and such like the maps are really poor, very outdated and not very detailed or clear for planning missions. Is there a way to use Google maps on the smart controller? If there is please share it as my experience with litchi set the bar with the maps, now I have a better drone and controller but poor maps😀
    Thanks Jason (UK)

    The all-in-one controller was the best part of the Yuneec Q500 i flew before getting a Mavic Pro. It just always worked with no hassle whatsoever.
    I would love having this controller for the Mavic, but anything more than €150,- ($171,50) is crazy to be honest.

      Well, it has 8km range, it is built extraordinarily well (feels really good and long lasting), it has an inbuilt monitor that is super bright and not to forget that it's not only a monitor, but a real computer (Android based) that does a lot more than just showing what the drone sees. Yes, the price is tough (if I wouldn't have gotten a test unit it would have really hurt my wallet too) but it is a high end solution, not a normal remote. Stay tuned and fly safe!

    • @threesixty4486
      @threesixty4486 5 лет назад

      @@TomsTechTime True! It's not just a remote, but a real expensive addon. Maybe DJI should consider on offering drones with this controller included. That would make a much better deal 😊

    Is it worth waiting for an updated Smart Controller with a SIM card slot or should I buy a smart controller now?

  • @Totustuus2022
    @Totustuus2022 5 лет назад

    I agree with you. It is pretty awesome addition to the Mavic signature but unfortunately is too expensive for me here in Australia. Is a little over $1000 bucks. Financially is not a good decision to buy it. I have my crystalsky I can use with any DJI Drone. This mew smart RC is dedicated only to one drone. To use it in another you will have to unlinked with your actual drone and relink it to the new drone you’ll use,. And if you drop the smart RC and crash your screen, wee, you will have to buy another controller.Too much for a controller. Keep up your great reviews mate!

      And reliable iOS. Android blows. iOS is Unix-based like flight management systems on commercial aircraft for a reason. DJI uses a custom (super old) kernel, so all updates take forever to arrive.

      I got a used iPhone 6 plus for $135 buck and it is only for my drone. cheap and does the job.
      I hate this controller design because they keep the screen below the joystick. I wish they push the screen on the top so the 2 thumbs don't cover the screen.

    I tried 1 Ultra and 2 Highbriteness monitors in a period of 6 weeks and they all failed the same way with screen lockup’s, app crashes, multiple reboot needed mid-flight, screen unresponsive to touch commands, flight records not being recorded if a app crash happens......
    The display is fantastic if and when it works but it’s just not reliable/safe to use...hope this remote is what DJI says its gonna do,

    its odd the position it puts the antenna in given the way they work, ie they are omnidirectional antennas so the antennas ought to be orientated so the face of the antenna is facing the aircraft for best signal ?
