I do service plumbing and pull 120k my 1st year on my own. And still make ot home to pick my kids up every day. Work smarter is my advice
120K as a level one plumber?
@@Sparky022120k as a 1st year business owner
cap
@@Sparky022 must be daddy's company 🤣🤣
@@Sparky022 ON HIS OWN. Figured the caps might help offset your inability to read properly. Still highly doubt that's his income year one and not his company sales, cause being that profitable year one on your own building a client base is almost unhe3ard of.
I’ll never forget when I was about 20 yrs old.
I had done a little bit of service plumbing and tried out new construction, realized how much better service was for me.
I started at Roto and while in my initial training a customer asked why I would choose to have a dirty job.
My response is still the same..
“I make as much as Firefighter or a cop” Im not getting shot at or running into burning buildings” “On the worst days I have to take a shower .. same as the best days :-)
I love sitting with customers. I love it talking to them and learning about them. Makes my job fun
that's my favorite part too
I love service plumbing!
If the money's clean....
I’ve been doing service plumbing my entire plumbing career I love it
Also, any plumbing classes anybody recommends?
I started in new construction did 1 year in residential then 4 months of commercial and now I’m back doing service I prefer service overall something different everyday 😅
Service plumbing gives me the skill to be able to handle all aspects of the industry. Because of service plumbing I’m qualified to do all types of plumbing, drain cleaning, water heater/boiler service. I like being my own boss rather than dealing with anyone else
I got to watch the blue angels practice during fleet week on the top of a 35 story building in downtown San Francisco, we were replacing all the old gal piping to the water tanks on the roof, timing worked out perfectly
I love service. New construction is for freshwater plumbers and you're paid better doing service
This was a wonderful video Roger.
I enjoy service work. I can even handle the occasional wild customer. The issue is... the company i work for isnt busy...its killing us.
Wht company?
Service plumbing pays well, stick to Service work especially in commercial
Service for me. Every day's an adventure and skies the limit as far as earning potential.
This is not helping, we can't keep telling people to pick and choose the most glorious type of work. We are starving for people to be onsite. Not in an office or 80k truck driving around "consulting"
What are you doing to make service work attractive?
@krakhare7111 to the employee? How about a job in the field you joined? Why does everything need an emotional reason? There is work to be done, and someone needs to do it.
Emotion aside, the status quo between employee and employer has changed. Working people can avoid doing jobs they perceive as “less-glamorous”, where as 10 years ago, they may not have had so many employment opportunities. If you are an employer, or in management, you would be wise to recognize and embrace this change in the workforce. You pointed out that you need people on-site. What I’m saying is, what can you do to change the perception of service work?
@krakhare7111 You're avoiding my statement and reality. The work didn't disappear. This so-called less glamorous work still needs to be done and we don't have people to do it. Employees have been taught to be selfish and lazy. Not that they deserve to do work of their choosing. Covid gave people an unrealistic idea about work. Plumbers can't run around pro pressing vanity shut off valves for 400 and hour and never get their hands dirty. Employees are only killing themselves, because owners will always find a way. Owners already provide a job, insurance etc. Why are all the burdens on the employer????? What are you doing to become a great employee? Your attitude is not sustainable, and neither are lazy entitled employees.
Again, sir, I acknowledge that you have acknowledged that there is a vacancy for service plumbers. However, all you have stated is a mere complaint. Whining about the lack of laborers will not solve your problem. As to my efforts as an employee, I’m currently employed as a fitter in a service department and I enjoy the work. As an employee owned company, we too have experienced the need to fill vacancies. Once again, if you are in management or an owner, (and your reply reads as though you fit one or both labels) you would be wise to get creative with your recruiting endeavors. Best of luck.
The worst poop job I had was when I worked as assistant maintenance, and we had a plumbing problem. They had a sand trap downstream of the office toilets and the laundry, and we dug down to the 4-foot square metal box and cut a hole in the top. I had to get down in it with a 5-gallon bucket and bucket all the tar-looking sludge into a wheelbarrow and carry it into the wood next door to dump it. Had to spend the whole day in that sewer pit, and at the end of the day, I was black with the sludge.
plumber here with no **** coverage
Our local service plumbing company seemed pretty descent when I had to have them professionally seal off a gas-pipe before we moved for CYA purposes. It was $300 for about 30 minutes of work back in 2021. Not too shabby I'd say, but I can tell they have a lot of overhead built in with the admin assistant that takes your call and conveys the issue to the plumber before the plumber (along with estimate) is assigned. I could see how it's aggravating with folks with very beat-up plumbing, though the higher the difficulty the higher the bill I suppose.
I've had my masters for a few years, doing new construction. I started my service plumbing business this year. What I used to make in a week, I can make before lunctime now.
IL throw a cable in a mainline 1st job then do a tankless on the next. We out here💪
I’m a new construction commercial plumbing apprentice. Is it a smart idea to just remain in new construction or switch off to service a couple years into my career in order to learn that side as well? Genuine question as I’m just trying to learn as much about plumbing as possible!
Depends on your preference. If you're enjoying doing what you're doing, then there's no reason not to stick with it. I know Roger made the transition to service after having done commercial work in the union. If you're not liking new commercial so much, you might apply for a service apprenticeship and see what you think. If it's not for you, you can always go back to new commercial.
The main downside to commercial construction... the HEAT in the summer and the COLD in the winter. Especially the heat in the summer here in Texas.
Dirty hands = clean money 💵
Ya know, I appreciate you handlebar mustache man.
I appreciate it man
I wouldnt mind service so much if alot of my employers could tell the difference between a customer complaint in regards as a money saving scheme, or a customer complaint that is an actual wrong doing the majority of the time in my hometown they are trying to save money
Ive been fortunate enough to have worked in every aspect of this industry over the past 40 years. In my experience, guys who have at least some background doing service and jobbing typically make smarter plumbers
My dad told me when I started plumbing...
"Sh*t goes down
Stink goes up
You get paid on Friday
And don't bite your fingernails."
I like doing service...
Digging everyday for sewers and water services isn't my bag.
Plumbing doesn't suck, crappy bosses suck

Sir i am your big fan. And plz sir tell me how to get a company visa of US by apply.
I am from Pakistan..
I'm glad you're a fan that is so cool! unfortunately I don't know how to get a visa for a company, I never had to do that. If able, I would look it up online and see what the correct way to do that is.
3rd generation plumber here who was unable to escape plumbing as my career. Ive always hated how gross plumbing was and did spend my time in commercial new construction and remodel because it was cleaner. After years of trying to escape i stopped struggling to get out of plumbing and embraced it. Managed to get myself a job at a residential service company office. Sure its less than i could make in the field but no more dealing with sewage or the toll construction can have on your body.
At least being out in the field more or less forces one to get and stay physically fit. That's a plus.
Try new construction 😂
Best roach coach services Caltech Pasadena…was there in 09 working on the Schlinger Lab….home cooked meals…..out of a roach coach….yes, two other disgusting roach coaches showed up but no one bought food from
Service for life
Is anyone slow as well? In Mass there’s jobs right now, lots of layoffs
Slow in Colorado
Here in Indy my last company was dead af. Just switched to another company that does commercial and residential and we're slammed here.
Slow in Long Island
Slow in nyc
Service may not be where the big money is, but I love the people.
Personally I think you can make more in service than in new construction
@@RogerWakefield in my area I guess it depends, I can make 15k putting in a new sewer service , or 2500-3k a day doing service depending on the calls. But then there are days I do 900 because the calls just don’t bring in that type of money
Commercial service is where it’s at
Dang you are handsome!
There are clean Plumbers then there are dirty Plumbers. That's what they make soap for.
:03
Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, no? Lol to each their own, but the union has sent me all over the place for work doing everything you can imagine in the plumbing world, and service is my JAM! I love service plumbing 😂
Sure, it can be stinky sometimes, and the digs can be tough, but nothing beats the feeling of diagnosing and fixing a major issue for a home or business owner. I love it, man!
