    I can't explain the darkness I came outta, but I can thank you for your videos. Skill toys and the friends they have brought me are one of the reasons I'm still here. Sounds crazy but I poured my negative energy into this and now I can show people and kids a different way to live!!!! Please keep the videos coming, lol loving the green carpet.

    By far the hardest move for me to learn so far! It took almost a month of constant attempts. It felt like learning 360 flips on a skateboard or something. I would stick it once in a hundred tries but it felt sketchy and I had no idea what made the difference. It got to the point where I was worried that I was reinforcing bad technique and that I would never be able to do rolls consistently.
    And then I lengthened my string by about half an inch and this slowed things down enough that I could control the roll. I also realized that I was releasing too soon and needed a little more wrap around the finger to keep the roll on track.
    Another thing that I noticed is that when my hands get sweaty or dirty, the string tends to bind and wrap around my finger instead of sliding through the roll. A pinch of arrow root powder on the fingers and string makes a huge difference.
    Now I am cranking these bad boys out in every direction and grip and loving it. This is definitely a "next level" move that opens up a ton of new options.

    I actually learned how to do rolls before I learned gap transfers...I actually still can't do a gap transfer lol. can't do ring finger rolls yet either but I've been practicing constantly.

    I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but when I try to do a high grip to top grip roll, I can never catch the bead with my thumb.

    • @hewlejr
      @hewlejr 5 лет назад

      One thing that helped me was doing a mid grip spring and pinching the free bead between my thumb and forefinger as it completed the wrap. Then I would let the captured bead pop out of mid grip and unwrap over my forefinger to complete the roll. You have to time it and release the bead with your thumb so that the string can pass as it unwraps. Eventually you won't even have to pause to release from mid grip and you will be fluidly transitioning from springs into rolls. Maybe we should call 'em "Spring Rolls"

    I seem to be having some trouble with rolls and I was hoping to get a few questions answered, if you wouldn't mind. first of all, your tutorials have been immensely helpful to me (I've learned almost all I know now thanks to you). Alright, so with that said, here are the problems I'm running into:
    1. I've seen videos where the beads only need to wrap around once to complete a roll, but mine need two revolutions for the second bead to hit my finger. I noticed that in this video your beads rolled twice before hitting as well, but I was just wondering if it's normal for some people to have to roll twice. My beads are measured properly, I'm pretty sure, and I'm thinking that this effect might be happening because my fingers are very skinny.
    2. As far as catching the bead at the right time, two things keep getting in my way. The first is that the bead will hit my finger as it's supposed to, but before I can catch it the beads will bounce off my hand. Is this supposed to happen if I fail to catch it on time? And how to I fix this? I assume it's probably to just catch it on time but I figured I'd ask anyway. The second thing that gets in my way is that during the roll the beds will tangle. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks so much for taking the time to read this!

      Hey. I'm glad my videos are helping you out.
      1. Chances are the videos you've seen of people doing rolls with less revolutions are being done with a set with a shorter string. There is also a trick, I can't remember if there's a name for it, where you wrap the bead around your finger once. It's not technically a roll, since it's not wrapping around your finger. So that may be what you're seeing as well. It is normal/proper for the beads to wrap twice to get around. I actually believe they'll look like that with quite a long string as well, only looking different in cases with a short string.
      2. If the bead is bouncing off your hand before you can catch it then you're doing it right, just need to work on timing the catch. It comes with practice. Maybe try preparing for it a little sooner? It comes down to a lot of trial and error. Also, I actually figured out a much more effective technique for rolls recently. In this video I kind of just say stick your finger out and let the bead roll around it... that's not so helpful. The way I do them now is I make sure all of my fingers are sticking out except for the finger I'm rolling over, then shake my hand a bit when the beads start wrapping. It doesn't make any sense really but it works much better. There is a lot more control and the speed is more consistent throughout. Tangles happen sometimes, but I'm not sure I understand how it's happening for you. Seems like you've got the idea down, just need to keep at it for a little while. You'll get it.
      If you want to film some attempts and share the video with me I'd be happy to take a closer look and give you some more specific advice.

      Thanks so much for the response! Your response really helped me, though I'm not sure I get what you mean by your new way to roll (sounds like a subject for another video :P). I think for now I'll just keep practicing, but if I can't improve I'll definitely send you a video. Thanks so much for the offer!

      String length makes a huge difference. I find longer is better. Also, if your hands sweat, this can result in the tendency for the string to bind and wrap instead of spinning through the roll. A pinch of arrow root powder on the fingers and string will fix this.

    I'm struggling with this, how do I send a video so that you can have a look?

    • @musclebones
      @musclebones  7 лет назад

      If you have a phone with a camera you can probably film a clip and upload is as "unlisted" to youtube. In the meantime, I have another video where I go over more tips on how to do rolls, on my channel it is called "how to improve your one and two finger rolls."

      musclebones sure, I'll check that out, I'll make a video sometime soon so you can see what I'm doing wrong on my one finger rolls

    i think combos sounds like a really good idea actually. idk if I missed it but i front think you covered downward rolls.And what about 2 finger rolls? I know it's probably a lot of work to actually do a video but I think those would be cool.

    • @musclebones
      @musclebones  7 лет назад +1

      The videos don't take as much work as learning the tricks, lol. I did not go over downward rolls as I am still working on them, and I can only do upward two finger rolls as of right now. I sort of jumped into making tutorials just to teach what I've learned already, not that I was coming from a position of expertise. Since I was brand new pretty recently I remember what it's like to have your beads and have no clue what to practice or how to improve. So yeah, there will be more tutorials, but I need to improve before I make them, lol.

    • @nikoniforos9658
      @nikoniforos9658 7 лет назад

      That's cool like you said to, you could probably do a combo video once you get them down. I personally like learning combos because then I have a foundation to work on. but yea I couldn't do rolls until I watched this so thanks!

      Yep! Any string with a mass on each end will work as a begleri. I got my start on one I made at work out of some fishing line and hex nuts. Many players make really great sets out of paracord and marbles, usually with a monkey fist knot covering each marble.

      I don't have any filmed or planned. If there are any tricks you'd like to learn I'll make a video for it, but I've covered pretty much the foundations of all other tricks. I've considered doing a combo tutorial per se where I go over a sequence of moves I've already taught but I'm not sure people will like that or not.
