While the last event here was a novelty Search event, this year’s contest brings real gravity and stakes. As the second-to-last stop on the schedule, all eyes are on the WSL Final 5. Some surfers have already clinched their ticket to the World Title-deciding event at Trestles, so there are only a few precious spots left. Who will seize them?

OMG this Herdy guy is a top 3 for sure. One the better performances I have seen in many times, that air was insane. Beat Italo with Italo's weapons, airs.

@@Jdoggy2448 Medina is the very best at doing airs, because he has mastered many types of airs, while most other surfers are stuck in one kind of punt. In Italo's case that would be that backside rotation, which is a great one, but even in that medina is superior (hence his success in australia). The only guy who could match medina's wide variation of aerials would be John john, but unfortunately kid's been born broken and will probably never reach the top level again.

Judges . . . I get it, I was rooting for Italo too.
But fair is fair and Italo, though precise and powerful, was stuck on a 1-move repeat throughout the heat
and did not give the signature aerial assault that we have come to admire.
I've never even heard of this guy Herdy, but it was too obvious that this wild card should have been leading through the entire heat with his dynamic bag of tricks.
Herdy deserved the win hands down, but was only given it
because the judges could not NOT recognize that BIG-AIR BIG-WAVE punt.
"Now are you gonna give me some points?" - said the expression on Herdy's face as he peered at the judges.
Even the commentators (more than a couple of times) have echoed this lopsided underscoring by the judges throughout this contest.
That said . . . Despite the Italo and Filipe upsets, the Brazilians got plenty of game left and I'm still geekin' out and routing for all of the mind-blowing talent they have brought to surfing these past few years.

Yes he's a freak talent . Can do anything. Not to stoked on the jerky bounce jiggle hope in-between turns. No need for that. That's just his style , he can't wait long enough to hit the lip so he is spazing out to get to work.

Compared that air 180 from Herdy with Medinas in the Olympics Game, for me all Matheus Herdy it’s was over scored!!
Like Kalohe Andino the only guys that doesn’t spinning in the air, always dirty on the land 180, cannot pull a perfect full rotation, but scores more then Julian, Medina, Ítalo e cia!!!

WSL needs to decided which manoeuvre has more points..180? or 360, like full rotation!??
Because Kalohe Andino cannot pull full rotation airs, but always scores more points…then those guys who pulls higher airs and full rotation in the air or in the land, and he cannot do that, so shouldn’t be rewarding for that!!
For me if the Athletes cannot do the same Manoeuvres like airs full rotations, as the opponent, like the top 3 surfers from the tour, than he cannot scored more or even close from those who can pulls the greatest airs live, no grab, no excuses!!
So WSL needs to decided again that half airs….it isn’t a full rotation airs!!!!
