That was the sickest end to a heat I’ve ever seen and to have two of the best ever to end it is perfect
close heat, but I do think that the backside repetitive turns of GM are over scored.
GM had just a little more power, but lacked the variety IMO.
Its not more power, its Slater's tiny board doesn't throw spray like a bigger board! It's frustrating to watch and if you don't believe it go back to contests when Slater was on regular size boards!
No one said kelly got robed on his first heat altough the very same thing happened: his style was really good but due to the lack of spray his scores were really low.
Kelly himself said that this board isn't good becouse it doesn't give much power and spray on the maneuvers, despite being really fast and easy to control.

It's like the commentator said. There had to be 1 point difference on the last exchange... both waves in the final exchange were 8+ in my opinion. Sure you could argue that Medina's final wave was better, but Slater was underscored for sure, it should've been much closer.

Watch closely at 19 sec. when they first cut to Kelly's Deep tube. Medina is looking straight back at Kelly who is perfectly placed and fully committed to that wave. THERE"S ABSOLUTELY NO WAY Medina should have paddled for that wave. Anybody that knows shit about tube riding knows you're gonna push over a chandelier on the guy. You do that to the wrong person freesurfing your gonna get punched. Like someone else said that was interference.

It was a 50/50 call, could have gone either way. They both surfed great and it was fun to watch, cant be too gutted. Interesting to note though, did you see that first barrel kelly went for? Medina paddled and made an unintentional crumble on the lip that could have sold kelly. It would be good to see an into the tube vision of that...Peace

I think this one is close. Gabriel was throwing vertical buckets on the last wave, and kelly's last wave had sprays that were going wide. The thing is, if you've ever had someone squash a lip like medina did on kelly's opening ride, you know you could have made that wave. Kelly was perfectly placed to pump and beat the section, which stays completely open if medina doesn't poop on it. minus one, kelly wins. especially because his opening wave could have been a ten, which changes the dynamic of the entire heat.
I have been surfing for 30 years.Have watched 100,s of contests and surfed top level amateur events in my young er days.Finishing 3rd in 1988 in the junior men's east coast championships to winner Kelly Slater..He surfed this heat as perfect as ever.Touched every box in the criteria that the judges ask.Speed,power,flow,.A 4.83 on wave 1 are you kidding me that was clearly at least a 6.50 am wave 2 6.33 an obvious 7.5 c at least wtf the judges know it's his last year so they b don't want to be blamed for over scoring him and pushing him through.This is a travesty Medina surfed good but was repetitious on every wave not changing it up difference in maneuvers no point of difference.I swear if I see this scoring again like this I am done with this dream tour bs.Jordy Smith,s firstcwave c against Ezekiel 8.5 3 gauges,as superman air straight to air reverse are you kidding me and a tube in the middle.What do these judges see out there?Get b it right this was clearly a rip off of the greatest surfer of all time.He was clearly surfing to there criteria and they fucked him f or doing what they demand. wtf wsl this c was so wrong
Totally agree with you Mark (i'm an Aussie) Kelly won this heat, I have a similar background as yourself. Kelly has been under scored consistently in recent years. He is surfing with so much speed, variety, and just plain genius creativity - I even whinge to my wife about the scoring, I just don't get it. An example of over scoring was Parko, beautiful surfing but gets 8.5's for sweeping carves and reo''s - circa 1990's. The crazy thing about this heat is that Slater was more than a point ahead, so even if we say Medina's wave was a whole point better, Slater still wins!!! The best surfing was done by Kelly, John John and Owen. A comment on Backhand / forehand: I think there was a trend to reward backhand this comp as the surfer can appear to be more committed to their wave, whereas forehand can look more tricks orientated and therefore less committed. For mine though, kelly transcends this with his almost reckless speed and creativity. Cheers
Thanks for the reply Tom.I have studied this heat closely.Not only did Kelly get underscored obviously but that chandelier Medina caused on one of Kelly's first rides I don't know if it was purposely done but Medina had no reason to even paddle for it.Kelly had priority and we have all seen him make sections way bigger than that before.This year at pipe for instance.Judges need to look at in the future that you can create chandler,s on waves to bother surfers from getting through sections.Medina 9.1 on his last so Kelly's wave was not better than an 8.1 realtor wow.I hope this doesn't deter him from his goal of claiming #12 and riding into the sunset.
Where are you from Mark? I had a long successful run in the ams when I did full seasons but started just a little bit later, although I did surf a couple AM events in Jr mens with Slater in '87-'88 here in the ESA-CFL (Central-Florida) division. One of my closest surfing buddies for decades is Justin Carver, IMO one of the best surfers I've ever seen.

if you watched this years billabong pipe pro same thing happened. i think they are judging based on "we need to keep investing in the future of surfing w the younger guys" than who's actually ripping the hardest or most technical.

Whatching now, for sure it was a close heat. E liked more The surf slater presented. But Medina was powerfull, leak of variation thought. However Kelly did some safe turns, should go more vertical at those turns. Great surfing From the boys

slater surfed way better in this heat with more variation and better surfing overall. Medina had one good wave, his last one. total botching by the judges.
Comically, the tour started overscoring backside turns in 2015 or 2016 as if half-pipe skaters in transition always do frontside turns because its easier!
The wave god's and judges have turned their backs on Kelly. 7.5! Wtf? His wave was clearly excellent by the standards of the day. Backside has been overscored the whole contest to the point it's getting boring and predictable to watch.

Medina's wave was definitely better. I thought Medina was scored correctly. Great wave. But Kelly's wave should have been at the least an 8.25 or an 8.5. I didn't see such a stark contrast between the two waves. When watching Slater out the back, the waves looked comparable.

I'm not a pro but kelly slater was ROBBED big time, nothing against medina, but when business is behind sports, wins new and the big market (brasil).
judges are being pay big bucks by corporate surfing.

They both got 8 waves each, they did aprox 35 maneuvers a head, Medina had one bigger wave, but Kelly had more variety and better maneuvers: so according to me kelly should have won. (if you also consider that medina did a little interference creating the chandelier and did the spray in the face of Kelly, well that could be a further reason to make Slater the real winner of the heat). Peace!
Maybe has something about the interference on the first wave of the heat...Medina is too far way from KS...but we can clearly see that lip has changed because of his paddling ...really I don't know.
But in my opinion Medina got it...lats wave was sick...
Those things make this sport super fun to watch...both amazing surfers!
Slater got robbed and should be pissed -- how was that chandelier not an interference? WSL Rules 149.02b -- The violating Surfer obviously causes a section to break down in front of the inside Surfer which would not normally have done so
causing loss of scoring potential.

They were not scoring the tube well in this event, if that wave was only tube he would have gotten a 6.5. Hardly worth clamoring about.

markriobr I don't know how long you've been surfing dumbass but when you pull back from a wave it causes the lip to fall onto the face of the wave instead of throw straight out causing a barrel you should surf more often it would probably help you

Totally agree with micheal s comment. How is the not a interference? Same as the medina v wright heat. Medina interference. Good tactics but medina because he gets away with it , stops the rhythm of the the other competitors and kills a scoring wave.

Usually you can see when someone had a better wave. And - if it was close, then the scores are close too. But this time - although I like Medina and his style, I have to admit - he was over scored on that wave, by a lot. And, in all fairness, he should have got interference slapped as well. Kelly went to judges immediately after the scores dropped - and he is not the kind of guy to do that out of passion but out of pure math. If anyone has a sense for scores, that's Kelly.
Also, on a smaller note - WSL should get those judges in order. And - once Kelly is out of CT, I know I will not watch it as much as I do now. Just because Kelly is not there. So...
Judges should've taken a point off GM just for that dumb-ass claim. Think I saw him claim on a 4.6 once .. ..

Hard to make sense of all this hate towards Medina. People still are saying if not one thing is the other,first one was.This kid is all about airs, and will never be good on charging big shallow waves. They showed the replay before the notes and i was sure that Medina had won,was 9 something,bit to high.Now an eight plus for sure,and was enough, because Kelly last one was not close.
