"Bring back the George" tells the true story of what really happened to New Zealand's much loved Georgie Pie restaurants. For many, Georgie Pie was a childhood highlight, a treasured family spot and a place where memories were born. Georgie Pie was at the height of popularity when it mysteriously closed its doors for good in the mid 90s.
Thanks to all who were involved in the making of this documentary, please see credits section at end of doco.
13 years later
G'day Mate
I frequented the original Kelston Georgie Pie in the early 80's and onwards. Those were the best pies of all time. It's enough to make a grown man cry.
This doco was shockingly good for an amateur. Enjoyed every minute 😁
Best youtuber in 2024
Thanks Mike, it was one of our final projects we produced when we were just youngins at broadcasting/film school. Was a truly great fun to put together as a team.
13 years ago jeez,
My god. That was first class production. You have become a kiwi icon yourself now! Congrats.
Nostalgia's a hell of a drug
Oh the memories Glenfield GP - Thank you soooo much!!
Tauranga Georgie Pie awesome Thanks for making this ! I remember flatting and one of the guys did the weeks shopping and brought 150 Mince and Cheese pies for $150 !!!!!
As a former Lynn-Mall (New Lynn, West Auckland) Georgie Pie Employee this was a fantastic watch and I loved my time at the company and the the mall branch.
I've been in Oz since "97 and seeing some of the old adds like Benji and the Flight of the Navigator was a real trip to the past I would love to have been able to get there for just one last pie.
I miss those Mince and Cheese pies.. or our Apple pie with ice cream.
Let's bring it back.
I am still missing GP in Glenfield (At the corner of Glenfield rd and Wairau rd).
My son, Vincent used to enjoy visiting that place!!!!
My best mates mum was the afternoon shift manager there. When she cleaned up for closing time she'd bring home the unsold pies. We used to feast on all of them . Miss those days and the GP Glenfield
Great documentary that should screen on telly. Well done man. Shame not that many have watched so far. Bring back Georgie Pie!
I now live in Australia, and none of my friends here will never understand how good Georgie Pie is.
It was never good.
Let it go
That classic kiwi double negative 😅
man soo much memories,BRING BACK GEOGIE PIE
No
Who’s watching this in 1980 , yasssayaaa
Watching this 10 years to the day! loved it.
13 years old!! Great doco and how I moss those Georgie Pie days
This is the first video that I've responded to, thank you for your hard efforts, you certainly have taken a lot of New Zealanders including myself back down memory lane, Georgie Pie was indeed the most memorable foods of the 90's The legacy of Georgie Pie will always live on. "BRING BACK GEORGIE PIE"
I remember after saturday rugby(me then brothers game) with dad coaching 1 team and sisters netball we would go get GP for lunch.. Then go watch either the seniors of the rugby club or go to the auckland team game if a home game mid afternoon then back to the rugby clubrooms for prizegiving.. No wonder my parents slept in on sundays
Fantastic video!!! Great memories. Mum and Dad still live a minute away from the Kelston GP
pure gold...
this was awesome as, brought back fond memorys
Beautiful. I remember finishing primary school and travelling to the closest shop at Highland Park at least 3 times a week to indulge in the best pies I've ever tasted. Watching this had those family feelings flooding back, bringing back tears to the eyes. Love it!
Growing up in Aus, always heard about kiwis pies whenever tried anyway. I'm moving to Wellington in a few years time, and when I get there I'm finally going to experience and try out kiwi pies, and I want try a hangi.
"Excelsior Bakery" in Wainuiomata or "Real Meat Pies" in Woburn, Lower Hutt are my recommendations :)
hangi is just a earth oven, like a samaon umu... not really nice imo
One day I felt adventurous and tried their curry pie and I was immediately hooked. Couldn't forget how good it tastes till this day.
The Baker with one hand and leg , you are my ROLE MODEL. All the best for you mate God always with you. from Melbourne .
This is damn good journalism!
"A customer getting rowdy or... jacked up on pies"
Priceless.
Brilliant mate, pity I only found this now! Hope you *all went far with your career in film/docs, as you have extreme talent in the full on kiwi way!!
I loved the Highland Park Georgie Pie, my brother and sister won bikes from their colouring contest, and I won some stuff too. But it was their pies that were the best. I went to Pakuranga College as well. I miss Georgie Pie.
I love Georgie pies, dad and I would go to Greenlane Georgie pies and have our own pie eating contest, with me being the winner every time.
But these were great pies and memories with my dad.
My favourite Georgie pie was the pork and vegetable pie, I literally still get cravings for it now.
PORK AND VEGETABLE PIE FROM GEORGE PIES, WAS MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE, BRING IT BACK, THAT EXACT ONE..
Spliff + balackberry apple and ice cream pie = happiness. Georgie pie pops into my head atleast once a month
This is full of golden one liners...My headache is gone! 22.56... I was inwardly jealous 🤣
This was awesome 💯💯💯
I left NZ for Japan in 1994 and never returned (although Japan only lasted three years)- Georgie Pie and Frying Saucers are two things I miss above all.
First time seeing this, brilliant doco.
I worked for G.P in the late 80s, awesome place, awesome pies, awesome people
Awesome pastry
Great to hear that Georgie pie is back to the future.
Great doc and heartwarming storyline. Very cool. Never heard of the company.
great documentary bro!! all da way from hawaii!!
This doco is excellent!
Fark, was too young to remember GP but this made me cry at the end
Back in the day, some of my classmates had after-school jobs at the Highland Park (Howick/Pakuranga) branch. Those were the days......
Richard Voogd omg that’s the Georgie pie I went to when I was little. I’m now in aus and miss those pies 🤤
well done !! great documentary
I'm an Aussie and I now love Georgie pie
Great Channel and Doco mate! Liked an Subbed!
loved the closing line hahahaha
HAHAHAHAH freaking hilarious 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Omg Simon Barnett's account of dropping hot pie filling on your knee in the car is so damn relatable. I love him so much haahaha.
Yeh that was my only slight issue with their pies, they were so dam hot, like a toasted cheese sandwich or spaghetti toasted sandwich, you couldn't eat it until 45 min lol
Yea a couple of years ago I came across GP in a service centre McDonals in NSW Australia. I got the shock of my life. But honestly they didn’t taste the same. I went back a few months lasted and they were gone.
Good Doco brother!!😊
Loved that place as a kid!!Still have some cool photos from My Birthday Party!! Definitely missed and loved from Me, My whanau and the whole of Aotearoa and still Talked about today!!❤
💯
I miss the 80s and 90s. Lived off Georgie pie $1 pies my lates teens
Great Doco.... Makes me really hungry for a good old pie
"If we lose what makes us unique and what defines us as New Zealanders, what else do we have?" Amen! Let's not sell any more of our assets!!!
Loved Zap.
the chocolate milk drink?
The original primo 😂
good on you bro, awesome doco you made :)
Awesome doco, i love this :D
Can they bring back Sparkles? Loved those as a kid
And Deck...
The icon is back but at a price. $4.50 for a mince n cheese is a big rip off and it doesn't taste anything like the original.
And they didn't bring the plain mince pie back :( I absolutely hate cheese, so still haven't been able to try one and reminisce!
Thanks for making this awesome doco and taking me back to my youth. Great job!
a relative of mine has some video footage of the tauranga Georgie Pie , I will be getting a copy of this hopefully before the end of the year and I will upload it .
Used to have Georgie Pie at Porirua after swimming competitions in the 90's. Good times!
Wow, I almost cried from the emotions of bringing back the George! haha! Shot Gareth and his crew! Wish u did the one day exercise in Auckland! But crackup that I used to work with Brian Popham at Air NZ! Now I will email him for the pie recipie!
The end of that commercial made me laugh, what a classic!
I still miss Georgie Pie now
I never heard of Georgie Pie, as I was born and raised in Miami, Florida, United States. I know if I lived around the time Georgie Pie was around in New Zealand, I would have been born a year before the first Georgie Pie would open. By the looks of the documentary I would have been devouring those pies. It looked delicious. That's not all I captured from the documentary. I learned how wonderful the people seem to be. Me. New Zealanders just have so much drive and heart. Your country just enticed me to visit. Amazing Doc!
10:00 I WANT HAVOC TO BE RACIST TO THIS STUPID WIGGER
Georgie Pie Palmerston North was Top Tier! It's simple why it was closed down McDonald's had the money at the time and. Brought them then closed them down. Competition ladys & gentleman. Also this guy who created this video is a legend!
You weren’t listening. McDonald’s did not shut them down. They purchased their properties. Georgie pie went broke. $1.10 to make but selling at $1.
Awesome video! Georgie Pie = Everything this dude said in the beginning of the documentary. YEAH Kelston Boys at 17:17. We were loyal patrons
Watching this in 2004 memorys kelston branch.
They are not the same as they use to be, pastry, cheese are different and i think they forgot the main ingredient...LOVE
Eww 😷 gross,
I am glad they went out of business because love also known as CUM is gross in food.
This brings back memories...they have the best pies ever
Bring it back
nice work
love it
My favorite childhood❤❤❤
Brilliant 👍
Good work, bring back GP
I worked for Georgie Pie not long before they were sold.
The cost to manufacture a small pie from pastry to register it was 44c
They just werent making enough of a profit for the owners.
I barely remember it. I went to the one in Takanini as a kid. Loved it. They had a ball pit I went in. It closed not too long after. Apparently closed in 1998 all the stores. I was only 6. Doesn't seem it closed that soon. Sure it was later (1999) I do remember getting a pie though. Also got them at Hunters Plaza I think. They had stiff crusts around the edges. Kind of remember the taste.
Georgie Pie, Highland Park was just across from Pakuranga College where I went to school.
I revisited Auckland recently & it doesn't look the same without Georgie Pie.
Does anybody remember "Uncles" food bars?
They are gone also!
I used to walk home drunk from the White Horse, Pakuranga & stopping at the top of the hill for a Seadog (which was really just a crabstick smothered in melted cheese & tartare sauce in a long steamed roll)
There was one in Panmure also
I MISS THOSE DAYS
HoldenMcgutzen Yes Uncles on the Pakuranga highway. A Chinese couple were running it.
Uncles , was best place to get a feed , 😊 G.I AND PANMURE ,
cant wait to taste these pies again!!! georgie pic is coming back!
Thanks for giving Ray a hand
I remember the one in Kelston they had a conveyor belt the pies used to go along the window by the footpath to the counter Mum used to bring bread and butter it was so embarrassing I sat at different table 😂 loved the pies used to dip the fries into the meat gravy yum
Awesome video! Georgie Pie = Everything this dude said in the beginning of the documentary. YEAH Kelston Boys at 17:17. We were loyal patrons. Off topic....do any of you guys remember the drink ZAP?
i miss it bring it back lol in every city !!!!
I was born in NZ but grew up most of my childhood in Oz. One of the only photos I have from my time in NZ is a photo taken at Georgie Pie, lol.
Legend.
Absolutly Brilliant , from Vivienne Gold Coast "Proud Kiwis Abroad "
This fella's got those Tom Holland vibes.
Takes me back to my days growing up in Tauranga and me and my mates smashing those $1 🥧. Loved Georgie Pies ❤
Man, I remember when the Tauranga one opened - was around end of 1993 they were soooo late to get one!....Amazing pies! Used to go about 3 times a week lol. Only menu item I didn't like was their milkshakes....Sadly It was gone by 1998.
mmm Georie pie,nice doco thanks
My favourite GP was at Greenlane...bring it back please. GP is still produced at Maccaas, similar but not the same
I remember Zap also.
How about Tang?
It was a cordial...but so much better than Refresh or Raro.
I recently rediscovered it.
Not here in NZ but in the Philippines.
Some Asian stores are stocking it here though.
How about Crazy Joes
I missed Georgie Pie , it was my ❤️ pie when I lived in NZ , kids have pie after school , as its very closed to school ,it was $1 👍
I miss Georgie pie 🥧😮
Great pies, good times the 80's.
Im crying and very jealous.
glad to see you employed the Australian Pizza Hut cameraman who has problems keeping the picture from shaking.. he must not had work for ages was he in NZ all these years? @11mins
Im glad we have Georgie pie back in NZ
Very sad this disappeared from the NZ retail food scene. I would love to see it revived so I could take my grand children to experience it. The Fish pie was one of my favourites. Cmon McDonalds bring it back or allow someone else too! :-)
Fond memories of GP pies.$1-$4 Was the only fast food outlet to sell fries in the opening morning hours if i recall correctly
Yay georgie pie is backkkkk !!!!!
