Playing out in the streets till the street lights turned on and would walk to the dairy for $50c hot chips, didn't have a swimming pool so we would play with the outside hose😆 Otara Markets were always the best place to get cheap clothing and delicious food🤤 Grateful my parents bought our home where we grew up in, built our character's and molded us into the adults that we are today. Still beautiful to us and still home regardless of where we are in the world 👍🏼❤️
I was born and bred in Mt Roskill and all my Whanau were in Otara so it was awesome times at the Aunties and Uncles and then of to the flee market. I haven’t been home in 12 years and I reside in Toowoomba and I miss the food.
I'm an Otarian child (no longer livin' there though), went to Yendarra Primary, Ferguson Intermediate and Tangaroa College. Born in the late 80's, grew up in Otara during the 90's. The swimming pools were the best - bombing with bottles (not me but my bro's and their boys), break dance'n on cardboard, marbles, chatter rings, handball, gutter board etc. Those were the best days.
This documentary was 10 years too late. They didn't become poor overnight. They were brought here to work, at the peak of NZ's economy, to do the jobs that no kiwi wanted to do. Then when the economy went bad, there was no help for anyone.
Islanders are lucky they have a good opportunity to get a citizenship in a country that is liveable the islands are a lot harder to earn money and create a better life then NZ that’s why they move to New Zealand for more and better opportunity’s

I was brought up in otara since 1968- 1979. Then back in 1990 - 1993. Clydemore, Bairds, to Hillary college. Life was hard in low income families P.I. dawn raids overstayers. U had to survive in my time lol.
Its only seperated from housing prices. Plus in NZ the state houses were predominantly out South conviently near all the warehousing jobs etc. It wasnt natural selection, it was by design.
The Pakeha teachers at Hillary College ONLY were well versed in cultures. At Otahuhu College in the next suburb our teachers were all Pakeha and cultural insensitive peasants. With hindsight I realise my loss. Was bloody hard in the 80's for brown skin.
Wow this was 40 years ago, the Maori and Pacific Islanders are confident and articulate about their future. I hope Otara is still strong and thriving . There is such a strong community spirit among the children of Maui here.
