I let milkweed grow and reseed. This year there was a thick patch of it. We had 3 monarchs this summer drinking from zenias. Early September now, i think they ar on way to Mexico now. Hopefully next year there will be more.

My husband has been cultivating milkweed seeds for years now. He has quite a lot and gifts them to people so there will be more people involved. This year, he built a rather large screen cage with a plexiglass door. He put 3 plants into the cage and we got 7 caterpillars from them. They have all made their chrysalis a few days ago so now we wait... this is the first time that I was able to participate because I have balance issues and couldn’t go in the back yard. Now the box is at eye level and I actually was able to watch a caterpillar finish making her chrysalis. Looking forward to watching them come out! Thanks for the great video!

Brilliant piece Dominique. I was taught this whole process when I was about 6 yrs old....it was taught in school. We even had a field trip for it. I remember it, and now, as an adult, I knew/remembered a lot of it, but not all. So, thank you for restoring my knowledge in such a nice way. This information was pretty standard for our schools. I still think this whole process should be taught in all schools in N. America and Canada. It's a very good way to learn something pretty great about how nature works.
I have nurtured one Milkweed plant in the back yard to five (I think), specifically for the Monarchs. : )

    Thanks for the awesome video!
I am actually looking for a video on how caterpillars look or choose for a plant where they can pupate. Can anyone recommend some? 😅
Funny experience I had was, I decided to remove this citrus plant I have from my garden. Then I saw two tiny caterpillars on its leaf which literally stopped me from getting rid of the plant. It would be really fascinating to watch these caterpillars grow and transform, I thought.
So I always talked to them at night, when I arrive from work and witnessed the leaves ravenously eaten by them.
Few days later, one of them got missing and my husband thought it was probably eaten by a bird 😕
The next day the other one was also gone. I was really devastated 😩
Finally, I googled how caterpillars pupate (though I already know how), then google recommended a certain article saying that caterpillars do not pupate to their host plant! (except those that are incubated or so)
What a huge relief for me 😅
I looked at the plant beside my citrus but did not happen to find them 😅
Well, maybe, any time soon I will see them in my garden 😊

    • @DominiqueLalondeFilmsNatureTV
      @DominiqueLalondeFilmsNatureTV  3 года назад +1

Thank you Clarynne !!! We rarely see them because they make their pupate well protected from predators.

I live in southwest Georgia. I planted a butterfly garden this summer. I of course included milkweed. I have had, for the first time , monarchs in one or more stages of development all winter. I have been able to witness this firsthand for the first time in my life. I am concerned about the freezing temperatures effect on some caterpillars I saw last week. Not to mention the fact that the milkweed is very skimpy right now, with the erratic temps and hungry caterpillars!. Amazing and beautiful. Shared video and photos with everyone, Facebook and most importantly my granddaughter Lily.

5:07 I'm lazy, what is that sudden dark blue line that's in the caterpillar here anyone? Breathing tubes? I heard that when the caterpillar goes from hanging like a *J* and after changing into a chrysalis their entire body gets liquified except for some sort of snorkel allowing breathing. I was cool about this until I heard something very nutty but appears to be scientifically true. Here it is: *Monarch Caterpillars* have been tested for a variety of reasons, one of these were experiments (I hate that too btw) was meant to figure out if the butterfly remembers anything as a worm. They do! Seriously, look it up.

This is a year later but it's true thay they remember things they have learned as caterpillars! I raise monarchs and the butterflies tend to be not as, but still scared when touched if they were handled as caterpillars! Even as butterflies they learn! I had to keep one who couldn't fly, I named her Princess, and she actually learned that her bottle cap was her doggy dish and whenever I came to pick her up it mean outside time or food! She was always so excited when I came

I remember as a 9ish year old Child catching small monarch caterpillars. I would put them in a box, wake up early in the morning to feed them fresh milkweed, and then one, one this one specific attempt, this one Caterpillar made it to become a chrysalis. It was this beautiful light, mint green with a gold gold and silver sparkly lines going across it. Once it was time for it to hatch, I saw the orange wings through before It could pop out. I stayed up until it hatched, picked it up, and waited for atleast two hours for its wings to dry while sitting on the couch. It was a mesmerizing experience. Hah, but I do remember being scared at 5:45 thinking it was exploding and that I did something wrong until my mum explained it.
