No one talks about that one anymore but it's true: those people were all safely contained in their own little backwater up until that point. Imagine how toxic the fallout would be if a site like Deviantart or Newgrounds banned all that stuff.
Yup. This is the exact feeling I've been having for years now. It just feels like more and more "people" have gotten accustomed to being very vulgar, cruel, or just plain fake in order to push an agenda/making others feel miserable. If you try praising anything legitimately good nowadays, a LOUD group will come out the blue to tear it to pieces and claim that anyone liking that particular thing is stupid.
The opposite is true also, you have a thing come out, and you're not allowed to say anything bad about it or even say you aren't interested and an army of people just come out of nowhere to shame you for thinking like this
The part about degeneracy lmfao I've always found horny-bait annoying (girls in 'bikini-armor') but people have some weird double-standards about it now... Stellar Blade gets called 'gooner blade' cuz the girls got skin-tight suits on, but then people stand at the top of buildings screaming about how they get off to furry characters or slightly attractive male characters without shirts. Aaaand nobody complains. Nobody tells them to touch grass. The hypocrisy is insane.
It's called gooner blade because if you go to their subreddit it's 99% people posting gifs of Eve's ass and nobody has any opinions on the story, world building, music, gameplay, etc.
Saddest thing is the impact this has on reality. It feels so difficult to communicate with my generation (gen Z). No matter how I approach people there always feels like some underlying aggression directed back towards me. I don't know how intentional it is, but I feel it and it makes me really sad. I always find myself enjoying the presence of older generations, aka the ones that weren't raised on this internet intoxication. Sad world we live in.
Same, as a fellow Gen Z. Dating is hell for us. Every partner I’ve had is addicted to their phone and social media. Been trying to get out more and now that I have I only ever run into millennials because people my age are inside all day on their phone lmao
I agree, and to give an example... I am degoogling my life, getting away from social media, just a complete shutdown of this brainrot nonsense, let alone all the content being so political to trigger you to no end. I have degoogled my phone, reduced a lot of google usage to almost nothing, trying to move all my mails away from google to different provider, and to then finally delete google completely once and for all. If I can say this bluntly... The weight of my shoulders are way lighter now, and it just feels liberating. Writing books, hobbies, trying to spend more time to help my mental health. Internet is just in a sad state of what it was back when I were young. I am glad I am not the only one that thinks this is bad.
Definitely not the only one... I'm in the process of uncoupling myself from my phone completely. It's a really peaceful, liberating feeling when you turn all your devices and computers off, and just experience being outside "The Matrix" for a bit. Nothing is logging your activity, tracking your location, listening to your conversations or scrutinising your behaviour to feed you more slop and ads. Nothing is constantly after your attention.
"Lets create online platforms where large groups of people with completely polar opposite ideals and beliefs should be allowed to have direct communication with each other. What could possibly go wrong?!"
If only they could communicate better and put themselves in each others' shoes. I think a big part of the problem is actually spaces where people can talk with ONLY people who have the same views as them. No ones' ideals and beliefs are meaningfully tested anymore and they get extreme and then they are taken into arenas populated with other ridiculous extreme views
The problem isn't as much as coexisting but a mix of extreme and blatant partisanship of social media and the cultural shift. Back then politics and religion were kinda taboo, although the taboo itself was being broken here and there, it was still kept to a minimum if we compare to nowadays. That and people had a more "I really don't know/understand" so I can't really have an opinion about this subject. Another reason I attribute to this mess is that trolls and sarcasm were easier to spot. Everyone could read cues and context and determine sarcasm or a joke, outlandish takes were dismissed and considered bogus and people moved on. Nowadays, everyone has an outlandish take and we constantly have to tell when something is a joke because apparently nobody cares about context anymore But that's an internet theory
I do get tired of seeing polls here on RUclips asking, "Which is better, or do you think this?" And when I press the, "I don't care option," it gets recommended to me a few days later, and I usually fall into the trap.
I've been feeling this way for the past five years. I don't know how to prove it with my words, but there was this sense or feeling of negativity being around that feels like a wall closing in that got worse and worse as the years goes by and it still does. It really sucks. Nowadays, I've almost completely disconnected myself from social media because of how much of a toxic cancer it is to the human soul. It took me eight years to realize that and now I feel better without it, but even then with me still being here, bits and pieces are still around. I know I'm a hypocrite with what I'm about to say since I still make videos to this day, but what Bo Burnham said once is something I always remember when thinking about the internet in conjunction with my personal life: "If you can live without an audience, you should do it."
I have noticed this too. Sure, there was always drama and negativity (especially in niche communities) but not to the extent that it is now. Same could be said about the bots and sites like Twitter, TikTok and Facebook, literally got so bad to the point where bots are not only rampant, but also posting either incoherent clown vomit or AI.
The internet would probably heal a bit if these massive "social" platforms would just collapse and force everyone to have to find their own little corners again. You don't hang out at a party with people you can't stand it never made sense to me to do the same online.
i unironically think that most of the division is literally bots and or people pretending to be deeply invested in all the dumb bs we see happening now on the internet.
I have often wondered if social media is just one giant social experiment to see if the powers that be can trigger civil wars or something... Inflammatory things get shared around, the algorithm amplifies it, no one knows who started it, what their motives were or even if they're a real person.
I only browse RUclips and Reddit and I use 2 extensions to heavily filter it, I have 90 keywords for both platforms, and it filters out *everything* controversial and obvious bait
The main problem is people started treating the internet like real life. I mean it seems like there is no distinction between doing something for yourself and doing something to get clout anymore. It has all been blended together and people are losing their shit over any little thing
I think the corporatization and normification of social media has got to be the worst thing to ever happen to the Internet; everything is a mixture of heavy censorship to avoid being politically incorrect, being designed solely to farm as much engagement as possible with barely any quality or effort put into it, having nothing remotely interesting or original set out to accomplish something, and being constantly astroturfed by mindless golemns who have no free-will or self-awareness that they're being used as pawns in a giant grift.

They clearly didn't manage to do all that on their own, they got help from the higher ups from Twitter, they clearly favoured them over other people
That, and the small hat tribe planting them in various positions of power to further erode the framework the internet was initially built on.
Every time I see some inconsequential drama I just think "there's no way these people exist in real life"
