Seeing you can the meat takes me WAY back to when I was a kid. My Mpther used to can fruits and veggies. We lived on a "farming ranch" so we always had "something going on". My Father was a butcher after the Korean War so I grew up with my Father teaching me hunting and fishing, skinning and cleaning "all sorts of critters".
Thank You for the stroll down memory lane.
Y'all take care and God Bless!!!!

When I was a kid I lived without electricity and thus we made our own candles for light etc.
I found that the water quench on the candle dipping leads to a candle that would spit a lot as it burned. Later I went to a slower method where I would tie 6 strings onto a rod and dip 6 at a time each in their own wax pot. I could then hang the candles and let them cool without the water quench. Even though it was a longer wait between dips, I was dipping six at a time and thus my output was better.
Better burning candles at that point.

I am so happy to hear you talk about the importance of having your gauge tested. I am new to canning (at 62 years of age!! 🤣), and I first heard this recommendation from Carolyn at Homesteading Family. She teaches canning classes, and she’s amazing! She said you can have the testing done at your local County Extension Office, so off I went, with the lid to my pressure canner (with gauge), in hand. She also said you should have the gauge tested each year at the beginning of canning season AND even when you buy a new canner. This advice was seconded by the County Extension Office. Apparently, while the factory installs the gauge, they don’t test them. My brand new pressure canner gauge was actually off, not by a whole bunch, but 11 pounds pressure is what is needed to ensure the safety of the food you’re canning. The last thing I want to do is make myself or anyone else sick, or worse, dead!! Everyone I’ve told this to has scoffed at the idea, which baffles me; why wouldn’t you want to make sure you’re food is safe? But don’t get me started!! 🤣🤣 Great video; your venison looks delicious!!

To fit the birds, and the size of her family (she was feeding eight or nine kids there before I left home, I'm the eldest of eleven) she canned the chickens in half gallon jars. We used to grab jars out of the pantry and eat the chicken and jelly right out of the jar. Mom also canned green beans, which I miss to this day.

With my canner and all the book it says to let the steam out for 7 minutes before you lock the steam thing. Then watch your pressure and start timing it when it come to the #’s you need to watch. I bought a cheap aluminum double boiler just for candles. Now that the kids don’t live here any more I don’t make candles. They were great as a 4-H project. 😄. I now buy my beeswax candles from local beekeepers.

I can my venison raw. The heat from canning will cook it when it is cut up into small chunks. I also add some salt straight on top of the meat before I put the lids on. On some, I may use cajun seasoning or other spices just to change it up. The stuff goes great with crackers and cheese. I eat it straight out of the jar!

I allways cook up a big kettle of spring green pine needles for winter. Good for the throat, lots of vitC and beating colds!
Is this something one does in america?
    The vikings svore to this.
I usually disolve a vitC tablet into the miks just to be sure that it will hold through winter and it works fine, even if the container isnt fully desinfected. Because the vitC is not actually vitamins, but ascorbic acid! Yeah! 👍

Had to compliment you on one comment. You said that home is the best place to be, but a bug-out bag is important for those cases where you have to leave for one reason or another. And that it needs to include the things that would help you get to a place of safety. Bravo for saying that. Far too many people advise "bugging out" for pretty much any reason. That's not the idea. Bugging out means leaving a place of safety (normally safe, but no longer), and making your way to another place of safety (prepared in advance). That journey between the places of safety is necessarily "not safe" by definition if nothing else. A bug-out bag should help you traverse that "not safe" area between the two "safe" areas, and help you get settled in the new safe area.
Of course, that second place of safety has to be ready for your arrival during inauspicious times.

My husband doesn't think I need a bug out bag. But I just bought two Osprey Backpacks, a brand new Osprey Aura AG 50L which arrived earlier in the week and an Osprey 10L Verve Hydration Backpack just arrived in today's mail (pre-owned, but in excellent used condition and I saved a bundle). I have almost everything I need, because I started prepping last year after watching your videos and some other RUclips videos. I just need to pack it all up. I still need to get five more items: a hydrophobic down sleeping bag, an insulated air pad, a sawyer squeeze water filter, a 3L water bladder and a compass. I think I have everything else. May I suggest for women to ADD a silicone MENSTRAL CUP, because several tampons aren't going to get you through 72 hours and pads are bulky and take up a lot of space in your bag. After seeing this video I'm going to add my Sony Walkman with AM FM radio and add some rechargeable AA batteries to my backpack. Thanks. P.S. you're hair looks lovely straightened. P.S.S. I may try making beeswax candles, you made it look easy! Also WHAT IS YOUR PLAN for all your pets in a long term SHTF scenario peridicament? I have two dogs and a kitty cat and two Bourke Parakeets. If SHTF, the dogs travel well enough in a vehicle, one is a 5 pound Yorkie and the other is a 12 year old geriatric Poodle, Gordon Setter and Rottweiler mix. We're not bugging out on foot because we won't make it that far! I think I should have a small bag prepared for all my animals too. Sorry this post is so long. But one more question. Do I keep my bug out bags with me in the house and put them in my vehicle/s each and every time I leave and return? Thanks.

first off good on you for all your supplies! really sounds like you could go camping too :) if you can stay home, always stay home if possible. prepare your home accordingly. and yes, plan for pets, elderly, kids, etc. to go with and plan what they'll need. i've lived in the country my whole life so it's hard for me to wrap my head around a need to "go" anywhere and hard to plan for animals in that regard too. i'll be stayin put unless it's life or death. but these preparations should always be with you and some kind of kit should be in your vehicle at all times.... just when you need your supplies you'll need them available wherever you are- whether home or car. To be safe, keep your ONE and only pack (if that's all you have) in your vehicle and then you're covered either way. you got it girl! good luck :)

Something I likely have mentioned before might be quite useful at your new cabin, and at your site in the U.P.-Lodge makes a combo deep skillet with a tight-fitting lid, that is also on the inside a shallow skillet, with a handle like the deep lower part, Wagner used to call theirs a chicken fryer, that one had a conventional cover, I didn't get much use from it for quite a while, as it was bought for camping, and then I didn't get out for that very much, and not at all in the past 2 /2 years with medical adventures, covid lockdowns, etc, I have however started using it quite a lot atr home, the lid makes a terrific griddle for pancakes, etc once nicely seasoned, and is still deep enough for most any frying,I tried it finally the other day for an omlet, and it worked great -shake the pan and the eggs slid around nicely (I also have another shallowish lodge (chef series I think) that looks much like an omlet pan, gently rounded sides and all that also works greatr and is slightly deeper.
The set is most useful as besides a deep skillet, covered or not, a shallow skillet, it can also serve well as a shallow Dutch oven, making it a 3 in one, might be handy at the cabin and tent for its versatility -3 pans in the space of one, but far too heavy to backpack . I still see them at most larger Wal,arts- in the camping section-just a thought you might find useful.

Just an FYI. First, you must vent your canner fir 10 minutes once it starts to steam before closing your pressure valve or adding your regulator/weight. VERY important part of pressure canning to ensure you get proper pressure for processing. Second, you should ALWAYS use vinegar to wipe your jar rims to ensure there's no fat from the meat that could compromise your seals and then add a few tablespoons to your canner to keep your jars from getting cloudy. And finally, since you're pressure canning there's no need to worry about sterilizing your jars, lids or rings as they're going to be sterilized during the pressure canning process. And WOW! That All American canner has been around for a while hasn't it?

You should let the canner vent a steady stream of steam for 10 minutes. Then flip over the little gizmo and start building pressure.

Green beans, tomatoes & other meats also have to be can with the pressure canner with the pressure gauage, otherwise you can die from the canned food, Fall of 1960 I moved to Nashville Tenn. A gruop of docters & nurses when to a Country INN, THEY LOVED THE GREEN BEANS, THE FOLKS THERE HAD RAISED THEM & CANNED IN WATER BATH. Soon after eating them 1 after another got sick & SEVERAL OF THEM DIED ! Enjoy your videos!

I make a bugout bag every year. Because I live 15 second walk from the largest river in California and it floods every year. Though we have burms around the property so (knock on wood) we have never been flooded out. But it gets a bit worrying when the water gets to just a couple feet from the top of the burm. I put together a pack with sleeping bag, small tent, food, water, coffee, tobacco, dogfood, antibiotics, toilet paper, lighters, waterproof matches, HAM walkie talkie (I don't own a cell phone and "some kind" of communications is nice to have), USB power banks, flashlights, hand crank & solar lanterns, etc., etc. And an inflatable kayak just outside my door to load everything in to get it over to the high ground. Long before there's any real danger here, all roads to and from here are flooded, so we're on our own. Even in mild flooding years those roads flood and it's a week or two till the water goes down and we can get to a grocery store. So keeping enough supplies on hand to last awhile is just a way of life here.
When I was a kid we made our own candles. I remember one time my step-sister caught the whole thing on fire on top of the stove. So I'm always real careful when melting wax over open flames because I've seen what can happen if you're not careful.

I would love to try venison like that! I believe the best survival kit is the one you make yourself, but that one does tick a lot of the boxes. I like to keep my wilderness camping gear, plenty of food, gallons of water, and survival items stowed in the vehicle and a couple backpacks so I'm always prepared, as things can and do go wrong any time! I once had to wait 10 hours on a freezing northern highway without enough gas to run the truck, for example. My sleeping bag was a lifesaver.

I really enjoyed this video, Brooke. I've never seen one like this of yours. It's the first time I've seen you in an actual "real" house with cats and all the comforts of home. I've never seen your hair out of the braids either. Anyway, I enjoyed it a lot. Hope this comment finds you well.

I can my elk meat every year. It's so good! Canned meat is perfect for so many dishes. I even can ground elk meat minus the fat. I'm into prepping. Wish I could find beeswax. Love the candle making!

It's amazing, even if your pets are a mile away, take something out the pot and there they are. Had Great Dane who would chill out in another room when I was cooking. He didn't stir no matter how often the food in the oven or the stove top was checked. The moment I thought it was done, there he was was, grinning.
Simple, easy instructions are the best and lot of information packed in this video. Good bugout bag and Surfshark is good as well.

I just had venison steaks for lunch today with fried potatoes and onions .... from my very own deer!! And yes i dressed it and processed it... unfortunately Missouri deer are not as big as the deer im used to from growing up in upstate new York.... i dont know if it is just a super good tasting deer or the fact i hunted it and processed it myself... but i am always blessed with extra meals

That pressure cooker looks just like the one we had growing up. I was always scared of that thing. LOL My Father raised Bees and I never thought to do anything with the wax (except chew it) wish I could turn back the hands of time....for a week. Thanks Brooke, cool stuff and this brought back awesome childhood memories.. Take care.

Great bugout bag. I have the same radio in mine. Your bag has some things I don't have and will get for my bag. You could get a Ferro rod and just a simple bic light too. Stanley has a nice pot with two green cups that stack inside the pot. I love mine. About 12 bucks at Walmart or Amazon.

This was very educational thank you. I liked learning about the candles. I have not been able to can, due to the fact that my stove either is too hot or not hot enough. It's either 8 and I need 11 or it's 15. There is no middle for my stove. I've not been able to can. Something I've always wanted to do.
Enjoyed learning from you. God Bless

Another great one! I love canning venison in my All American canner which is made in Wisconsin! It’s great with mushrooms and gravy on rice, on wide egg noodles, etc. cool 72 hour pack as well. I’m a safety nut and personally I put my hair back or up to avoid the singe. Burnt hair smells so bad!!

Oh my goodness, a page right out of my kitchen! I can venison, chicken and pork chops and beef.....I don't precook them, I can them raw. Only remember, cold meat goes in a cold water canner, and then you heat them. Hot meat, as you do it, in the hot water in the canner. I have a newer model American, and I have to vent mine for 10 minutes during the beginning of the canning.
I have made decorator candles as I love the PRIM look......I use the emergency candles that you can purchase at the dollar Tree Store.....(I think, 10 for a dollar) They are small, maybe only 6" high. Between the dipping process, you roll the candle, while still quite warm, in instant coffee. Also, your melting wax has whatever color crayon in it, that you want your candles to come out...I usually melt brown crayons. ONce they are rolled in the instant coffee, dip again and they really look prim! I do use them for decor purposes but of course, they ARE useable! Love your video! I drop anything else I see on the computer, and gravitate to you!!! Love and hugs, Bev in Maine!
