I started with a new instructor this year and he insists the bow must slightly leave the string so "the string can vibrate" for each staccato note. Difficult to do if you have a series of staccato notes. Which method is correct?
Hi Debra, there is no "absolute technique" because it is a mistake that many teachers of "absolute truth" make. There are two types of staccato, the "Staccato Preso" (it is played if the bow of the string is stopped) and then there is the "Staccato Volante" (or also "flying staccato" which is the technique that your teacher is teaching you, although it is more difficult to control and what makes it even more difficult is that it has to sound very light, nice and clear)
