That ring shaped item definitely looks like a coiled snake. Google showed me a lot of rings from the Roman period with a coiled snake, from the wear on it that appears quite old and might even be older than Roman if I'm honest, but I'm no expert. It could be a pendant, or something that would have had a cord or belt through it. I think you had some interesting quirky finds this time out, but I think that one is probably the most significant. More of that field please!

@@laurelmoon2 all the ones that I found were wood not metal and I don't think it's big enough for a tobacco jar but I think it might be a replica little box from the 1950s? But regardless...it is definitely a face!!

John. Please make a follow up video on the face cup. Like me, everyone wants to know more! These items are the very best part of the hobby... finding the unusual that you can research. Hopefully even put together the origin and make some logical conclusions on how it ended up in a field in Scotland. Crazy.

I wonder.if the concave relief portrait came from a grave marker. Grave markers from Edwardian period through the 1920s often included relief portraits. After fields are ploughed, look for examples in your local cemeteries. More recently, photos are etched into metal or actual photos are encased into glass.
Your portrait is about the right size for a grave marker, memorial plaque or historical marker. In any case, it is a nice quality portrait. Bring it with your to the museum.

I think the converse face is a Victorian curiosity may be illustrating the Hollow Face Illusion - when you tilt the face it appears to move in the opposite direction. My late colleague Richard Gregory 'discovered' this effect but there are examples from antiquity where people must have be aware of the strange perceptual phenomenon.

As people have said. The ring has a snake look to it. If it's eating its own tail, then it might be viking related. The Midgard serpent?
