A smart way to travel to Brunei. Having your own vehicle to go around is more convenient as the public transport is really as proper as our neighbours. As you mentioned, parking is mostly free other than the ones in the capital city, which is just 50 cents per half an hour. On highways, yes I guess we do drive kinda fast, but in the city area it's mostly relaxed. FYI, the EES is now only charged per vehicle now - $3 one way - not longer per person. I'm surprised they don't allow card payment for V-Power as that is the only one they accept card payment with for local vehicles. I think the one you went to, has no card terminal installed yet. Anyways, thanks for the nicely informative video 🙂
Hello there! Thanks for watching and the insightful comment Yes, i'm glad we chose to rent a car to explore Brunei. Also, it's RARE to have free parking anywhere in SG, and that's why I had to mention about free parking in Brunei 😂 Good to hear that EES is now cheaper...how things have changed within a span of a month!
Hello there! Yes, I saw snippets of your SEA travels on IG. ;) Hope it has been an enjoyable trip! Do check out Brunei for a slightly different experience if you're in the area. ☺
@7:53 magically changed clothes, we did. @9:42, will like to give a shoutout to the 小胖 petrol attendant, who reminded me of Stephen Chow's side kick in Kungfu Hustle. Despite limited spoken English, he tried his best to clarify our qns and was extremely friendly/professional. If anyone swings by Shell Jalan Jerudong along the Muara-Tutong highway, do send him our thanks and let him know he helped our trip. Drove for almost 10 hrs during this trip and the Perodua Axia fared pretty reliably, though we wouldn't recommend driving too fast in this car as the vehicle chassis can be considered lightweight (hence fuel efficient). Bruneians drive very fast!
@eugeneczj8210 hello there, thanks for watching our vlog. Yes, we heard something similar and understand that any tinted glass has to abide by the standard regulations set and approved by JPD ie allowing 70% visibility. That said, our rental car didn’t come w tinted glass so we didn’t have this issue. To be safe, it’s always prudent to follow/ respect the laws of the country. Safe travels 👍🏼
Hello Eugene! Thanks for dropping & leaving us a comment. As usual, Mr. P ('master planner' for our trips) has responded very promptly to you. 🤭 Let us know if you have further questions!
Hi, thinking of making the same trip as you guys did. Can I just pls check w you: 1. I read that the vehicle insurance is required for the border crossing. Is that something that will be given by the rental company, and was it checked at the border? 2. Is Singapore's driving license sufficient? I suppose no need for an Int'l Driving Permit? 3. From your video you mentioned you could use SGD everywhere in Brunei. Can I check if this also applies to even small shops/roadside stalls? Does this mean there is no need to change BND beforehand for the trip?
Hi there @alanarsenal thanks for watching our vlog. 1. You pay extra to make an outbound into Brunei from Miri and the insurance should be included w car rental company. Best to double chk. Not a required doc at custom, but u would need vehicle details to apply for the online ees. 2.yes sg driving permit sufficient. 3.yes usable at all small stores, except for $1new Sgd coins. Any change will be in bnd too, so best to have smaller notes on you to pay exact
@@tzew thank you so much for reply. Very informative. Just one more question - does the rental company provide the parking coupons? Or did you have to buy them?
@@alanarsenal Hello! When we picked up the car from the rental company in Miri, the parking coupons were already in the car - these are for parking in Miri only. In Brunei, most outdoor/unsheltered parking spaces are free i.e. no need for parking coupons.
@abuhamzah08 hi, you first need to arrange with a car rental company on the dates of your visit (note that outbound to brunei costs extra). From there, the car rental company will provide you with the information to input into the EES system. We contacted hara car and rented a Perodua Axia for its fuel efficiency. You can google them and the Brunei EES system easily.
Hi there @abuhamzah08, thanks for watching the vlog! Mr. P @tzew has responded to you in the comments below. He does the planning for our trips, so he definitely knows the logistics and admin details 100% 😆
@Siew-mt3df hello there, thanks for watching our vlog. Your Miri vehicle rental, upon booking confirmation, would provide u with the vehicle details to register in EES. On your end, just bring along your driving license to show when picking up the car, and standby a printout copy of the EES QR code confirmation. When crossing into the Brunei customs, you just need to provide your passport and EES confirmation (and make payment if you have not yet done so). Have fun driving to Brunei 🚙🛞
In our experience, no. But we had to show the EES approved (QR code). If you wish to veer on the side of caution, you can print everything out in hardcopy!

Did you enter the above items(rented car number and owner) into the EES system in miri airport and go straight to Brunei? I can't know information of rent car in advance
Hi, good video, I also plan the same route like you guys, driving rental car from Miri to Brunei. Just wondering do you need to purchase extra car rental insurance from the car rental company? Do you need to have international driver license (IDP) to rent the car?
Hey there, thanks! We didn't purchase extra car rental insurance, as our own insurance had covered. There were no requirements for IDP and we briefly showed our sg driving license when picking up the car without further qns. To be sure, it is best that you check with your car rental company. Heads up its a long straight drive from miri border to brunei, and may get mundane after a while. Snacks/ music helps and do prep some sunblock as it can get really hot in the front two seats.
Thank you for sharing!
