Today we test the new BOSCH GDS18V-330CN mid torque impact wrench and see how good it is vs it's not so good rating from the brand. But maybe that's a good thing in today's inflated world of tool specs? It takes on the Milwaukee Gen 2 to find out.

The new mid-torque has been added to our list of tools that dont suck: www.amazon.com/shop/torquetestchannel I think Bosch model numbering their tools based on what they can do in forward tightening (which looks accurate), and leading with that number in marketing sells them short. It's an old school practice, so props for that. But likely makes it hard for the average buyer to compare the tools with the monster specs plastered on other brands today.

I see many comments about Bosch being under rated, forgotten, or not well represented in stores or online.
I think Bosch, and to a certain degree Makita, are brands that have a very large and well placed global footprint. As such, Bosch has not been marketing in the US, in the way it did 10+ years ago (and Makita also lately). For Dewalt and more so Milwaukee, the US market is their bread & butter. I do not know what their numbers are but they live or die based on their US sales.
I personally believe that Bosch and Makita have so many markets to focus on that the US, although the biggest or among the biggest markets, history has shown them that they will only get so much in the US. All tools today are made in China or elsewhere, but Milwaukee is considered American, as is Dewalt, where Makita and Bosch are considered foreign.
I think Bosch and Makita have come to realize that although the US market is large and valuable, no matter how much money they sink into marketing, storewide shelf space or other promotions, their piece of the pie will not get that much bigger. So invest a ton less, lose a few market share points but still make similar profits. the savings can go to other worldwide markets where it could make a difference.

    • @engineer_alv
      @engineer_alv 7 месяцев назад +2

your summary was pretty good. Sometimes I think Dewalt and Milwaukee are the GM and Ford of the power tool manufacturers: they rely on too much on their home market. There is nothing wrong with that but from what I've seen their prices are not exactly competitive outside North America. They spent a ton of money on marketing, all those shiny packaging artworks, ads and showrooms with 10X more powerful, 3x faster and 2x as durable printed everywhere don't come cheap.
Makita is the Toyota of power tools, not exactly the most innovating anymore but it's always seen as a very durable tool and they reign supreme in key markets like Asia, Australia and Latin America while Bosch is the VW of tools, a super big conglomerate full of divisions that also happens to build very good tools but has to split their R&D budget on many other areas as well. Best selling in Europe with a strong presence in Asia and Latin America

@@BillyTheTeen95 the problem with testing sockets is that it's very hard to get data... You can't just test a single socket out of the set, and you'd also need to test multiple sets of each brand because a failure doesn't mean they will all fail.
The equipment would be complicated too... They'd have to get some seriously strong "fake nuts" made and hardened for every size, and find a tool strong enough to break the socket without the tool itself failing.
In most cases you will break your wrench or breaker bar (especially 1/4 or 3/8) before your socket fails.

    • @nst6563

For all the negative responses here, I for one think it's a good idea.
I'll leave testing the bolt and nuts details to those with the testing equipment. But how to test the sockets could be simplified.
From each set pick the 3 or 4 most commonly used sizes (like 10,12, 14, 19).
For the tool(s) use either the strongest tested or the most commonly used.

You know what is really missing big time on your channel: Teardowns and a rating system based on repairability and spare parts pricing. Bosch and Makita will dominate then since Milwaukee and Dewalt is basically unfixable due to spares being too expensive or not available on their own.
They often lump groups of parts together and you end up paying 100+$ for a complete wiring harness assembly for a Milwaukee when you only need the trigger switch or the battery contacts.
I only buy Bosch and Makita because of that, I dont support overpriced mid grade tools that are a one time wonder you better break in the warranty period because you cant fix it yourself.
In fact I have an old Bosch 12V drill from 2014 thats been abused and used a lot in general. My oldest Bosch tool actually. Recently opened it up cleaned it out and regreased the gearbox. The motor is actually completely worn out. A new motor is 16€ plus shipping straight from Bosch. How about that for tools that actually last and are worth repairing.
Bosch and Makita are a bit slow and not as innovative as other brands (Bosch still carries quite a few brushed tools for example) but their products are well engineered and are often worth repairing. Take the GSH 11E demolition hammer. Absolutely indestructible hammer, the golden standard on any jobsite across europe. Well worth putting 2 to 3 service kits into aswell as an armature before its done. These regularly last so long when serviced they will wear away the commutator bars on the armature completely and thats rare these days because it takes a lot of runtime hours.
All im saying is when the EU overlords push trough more Right to Repair Legislation for Bosch and Makita it will be buisness as usual, for other brands most certainly not.
Bosch Powertools is a place where german engineering still shines which is a rare occurrance.

It seems really weird that Bosch isn't a big player in the US market. They make good stuff but it seems like a gamble to buy Bosch with a fraction of the availability than from the big players. There also doesn't seem to be much innovation coming out from them either.

They have been doing a good-ish effort for the last 2 years when they debuted the BiTurbo lineup here as PROFACTOR.
This year alone they are releasing over 20 new tools in North America, many of them on par with their European releases.
They are available through a few big retailers like Lowe's, ACME, CPO outlets, Menards and Tractor supply.
They are notably missing from Home Depot but so are other brands not having presence in one or more of the other chains mentioned above.
But people here in North America are very loyal to their brands, just like they are when buying a pickup truck.
And the same happens when you travel to Europe and notice how small DeWalt and Milwaukee compared to Bosch over there

Bosch is a big player in the US market. Most of our business is focused on Rotary Hammers and Carbide on the industrial side. Bosch is the only tool company to own the production of the Carbide that is used in accessories. We do very well with our measuring lasers as well. You will also see brands such as Diablo and Dremel that do well in the US market.
Bosch innovations are not only successful, but are adopted industry wide such as SDS, Starlock, and X lock. You will see over 30+ new cordless tools within the next couple of years.

Over-rating is awful, and tools should be penalized for that, which they are in these rankings. But under-rating isn't super-awesome either. There are times when low torque output is desired, and a consumer should be able to trust specs as accurate, and that includes penalizing for under-rating IMO.
I'd like to see penalties (maybe half as harsh) for under-rating. Bosch scoring 100 in this situation should not have been the outcome. There should be a buffer zone below and above where 100 could be scored, but above some amount tools should really be losing points for being much stronger than advertised.
