ive never playd the game. I just love that finally someone decided to do a full CG series for a mature audience. Theres only so much pixar a man can take. And ive watched through appleseed and the final fantasy flick so many times, that this is a breath of fresh air to see something western thats full CGI and mature on screen. i wish more game to screen adaptations took this route. I remember I was super in impressed how they portrayed achilles with Brad Pitt. I saw Troy in theaters when it came out, and this was before Avengers and all that. I’m not sure if it was a lot of forced perspective or doubles but they really managed to make someone who’s somewhat short in real life seem huge. Very well done. Especially during that fight scene.
That show was soo good, so wonderfully done. I've played league a lot and it was good to see they didn't overdo it with all the characters. And the animation style was just beautiful
So glad they talked about Sword of The Stranger. That’s been one of my favorite movies for years for it’s absolutely perfection of action choreography. So happy to see it getting love
I've always loved that fight from Troy. I found the choreography really well made to portray the different fighting styles and how great a warrior Achilles really is. It's also nice to get the rundown from James and to kind of know why it's such a great scene.
During the making of the movie, the story direction for the fight was that Achilles should fight like a god. It should be effortless. Hector's fight style, is very much a hard-earned fighting style of a soldier.
That Troy fight between Achilles and hector is one of my all time favorite for all the reasons he says, I know a sword or weapons choreographer would say a lot of the movements wouldn’t happen in an actual fight but it’s all apart of the story, Achilles is the greatest warrior/swordsmen of all time, part of the reason he even joined the war was to fight hector and prove it, but the emotion of hector killing his cousin just added to it, if your Achilles and your the best and you know it, you’re gona do moves that no one else would ever try
I got tingles from that Arcane fight, both when seeing it on the show and watching it again right here, just an absolute masterpiece. I never got into League the MOBA but if Arcane is a sample of the type of cinematic story telling that can come from that world then I'm all in on that 100%
Sword of the Stranger has been one of my favorite anime films for years. I'm so glad you guys actually talked about it. No one I know seems to know about it so it feels good to see others appreciate the beauty of the story and the animation.
The scaffolding bit in The Fable gave me a little The Money Pit vibe. There's been quite a few good ones over the years. Thinkin Bond and Chan and some older ones I cant get in my head but theyll come to me. I think even Shang Chi but may be because of the clip. Pretty sure though. Be fun to get some details from a Stuntmen react on a few of those.
I've been WANTING you guys to do the Ekko vs. Jinx Fight from Arcane. That entire fight was just a god damn Masterpiece. Plus Fun Fact, this entire fight actually teases Ekko's Future in League, which he gains the title "The Boy who Shattered Time", of which in League he uses time manipulation.
Fun fact, the actor in 13:00 (and in the intro) actually did the stunts himself! His name is Junichi Okada and he’s a Japanese idol (originally in a boy band) but he is also a trained martial arts instructor and was the fight choreographer for this film (The Fable). I never thought I would see him in a video!
I like how Nico and Gui instinctively clapped their hands simultaneously to re-enact a sword catching. 05:34 And I need to watch Arcane. Haven't seen it yet. What a gorgeous art.
Its so cool to hear these guys talk about Arcane in a story sense here. Hearing them talk about how deeply time is signified in Ekko without knowing that in the game this is based off of, his entire kit is based on going back in time to fix a mistake. Something Jinx was never able to do when she blew up the office. It also portrays the mental break in Jinx. When her younger self, Powder, shows up shes happy and smiles. Its her before she shattered and started talking to her explosives and guns. This whole show really does justice to the lore the game came up with in its 10 years of being alive and changing and molding into something amazing. And the best part? A lot of people don't realize theres more than just Piltover and Noxxas and Hextech. Theres an entire universe with over a hundred significant characters they can build this show with and I am SO EXCITED to see where it goes. Much love to the Corridor Crew and all that you guys do
Wow! I've never played the game, so I didn't know all that about having a kit to go back in time and change things. That's awesome to know. Makes me love that scene even more now. Being someone who never played the game I'm always wondering what little easter eggs I missed in the show
Ekko's ult is a rewind, where he goes back ~3 seconds in placement on the map and hp. It has always been a cool ability in the game IMO. And the lore man, it used to be so extensive. When the game first came out every champion had a whole essay about them, almost like a DnD character, and they all entwined with each other and had their own worlds they came from. There's rivalries and siblings in the lore which actually comes out in voice lines and (usually) non-factor game enhancements. Vi and Cait, for instance, have an ego challenge when they see each other on opposite teams on who can catch (kill) the other one first.
Things crossed you've got more Arcane stuff in the pipeline, it's absolutely gorgeous and it'd be fantastic if you got somebody who worked on it in for a full episode of animators.
Heck yeah. Arcane and Into the Spider-verse are the only 3D animations where I've actually been blown away by the aesthetic. I hope more shows and movies try to find their own style like this, instead of copying what Pixar has been doing for the last 20 years.
@@emilemil1 I hold them both up as gold standards of a complete package, animated or otherwise. Aesthetics, characters, music, world. Such clear care and attention paid to every aspect.
Finally some love for TROY. Even though many things in the movie fall behind with the actual Greek Mythology, they really did a great job showing the emotion on that fight without making new things up to make it flashy and stuff. 10/10
Arcane was very clever how to took different audience members on different journeys. For me, when the soundtrack song kicked in it took me completely out of the story and was so cringey, so the bludgeoning scene was an expected relief.
Ekko vs Jinx was really amazing to watch , like in my opinion , one the best moments if not the best moments from the series Like the whole animation style just changes it just shift into another gear you know . Like you know what happened just a bit ago and like and that tention and intensity and all of a sudden it just changes the whole style but still carries all of it .... It was just perfect ...
SUGGESTION: If y’all haven’t already, would love to see a breakdown of the stunts in Ong Bak; some insanely brutal stunts and fights in there, specifically the final Temple scene. Love y’all👌🏻
I love how these videos highlight lesser-known work like The Fable and Sword of the Stranger along with the Hollywood blockbusters. These are the kinds of movies that may not get much attention (at least in the West) but deserve an audience.
You guys need to do a reaction (maybe animators react) to ARCANE. The amount of movie and storytelling mastery that show has is absurd. If that show was made by a renown director, it would be considered a cinematic masterpiece. I know it has been praised by critics and audience, but you know what I mean with that, it's not at the level it should be (yet).
I would love to get insight into the production costs during Animators React. Apparently before Arcane, the most expensive episode of animated television produced was the Avatar finale for around $1 mil. Marketing subtracted, it's estimated that every episode of Arcane had a budget of roughly $8 million. Question is: do the nine-straight Annie award wins justify new heights of GoT-level spending in the animation industry? GoT was the thing that made studios say "we can spend movie budgets on TV", hopefully Arcane does the same for animators.
The fight from Troy was just so breathtaking. When I first saw it, I was a child yet I understood, that Achilles could have killed Hector at any time. But he had vengeance on his mind and wanted to play with the food. But later he was enough of an honourable warrior to give Hector's family his body back so they could mourn him. Such an emotional roller coaster. Edit: Just watched the fight again. I realised that fight also had 3 Acts. Act 1: Helmets away. Act 2: Swords out. Act 3: Shields off.
I heard that Eric Bana and Brad Pitt made a wager that for every small hit was $50 and a big hit was $100. Pitt owed Bana $750 and Bana owed nothing. Edit: got the amounts wrong.
The only thing that annoyed me in the fight scene was that they wore both armor and in the end Archilles killed him through the armor. Why then wear it at all? It is a total nitpick and maybe he could have done it in real life, but you have a sword and an unprotected head... Figure yourself out what the best way is to make sure he is dead.
ARCANE!!! Such a great show! Edit: You guys need to analyse every single frame of this show. Whether it's on VFX react Stuntmen react on Animators react. This show is a masterpiece.
They got David Sandberg, Scott Adkins and even many guys at Weta so I'm sure James is just a call away from some of them. Though he might be very busy at the moment but I would love for him to show up
This guy's passion was INCREDIBLE to watch. It makes me so sad that I've lost this kind of passion for the couple things I used to love and let drive me. Would love to see this guy on here again 👍
Every frame of Arcane is a masterpiece. There are several fight scenes in it that are really good, and It's all hand-animated, no mocap. It totally deserves "Animators React". Also, if you guys are looking for some new scenes to look at for "Stuntmen React", the bus fight in NOBODY is awesome. That movie was a lot more fun than I expected.
We need to see an “EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, ALL AT ONCE” break down…. 5 vfx guys in their bedrooms during the pandemic! Honestly the most magnificent movie I’ve seen in a very long time.
In the next episode of "stuntmen react" you should take a look at the amazing stunts of late Jean Paul Belmondo in favour of his memory. He is a legend of European cinema and quite renowned for being one of the first major action stars to perform almost all of his stunts and many of them are really impressive (even to the point of being ridiculous by today's standards; Tom Cruise or Jackie Chan of his time and place), so I really wish you would react to some of them. Especially since not that many people seem to be aware of his work nowadays outside of France. There is a neat little video entitled "Hommage à L'Acteur&Cascadeur Jean-Paul Belmondo by E.Delacour" on You Tube which is a highlight reel of most of his amazing stunts, if you want to get a taste. Fear Over the City (1975) - He walks on the roof of a real metro train as it goes through a tunnel. The Burglars (1971) - He jumps unto and hangs from a bus (a couple of them, in fact) during a car chase with busy traffic all around. At another point, a dump truck drops him from a very steep hill. That Man From Rio (1964) - Some crazy stunts at a construction site. He is suspended from a cable forty meters above the ground. The Animal (1977) - He drops from a helicopter onto a plane mid-flight and then stands on the plane as it flies away. The Guignolo (1980) - From a boat going at high speed he gets on a helicopter flying low above it (he had a thing for hanging from helicopters) And there are many more.
I think he is well known and respected in Europe. I grew up in Bulgaria and everybody knows who he is and we admire so much. He was literally my first action hero on TV. And i can compare him more with Jackie Chan, because of the humor he had in many action scenes.
Achilles vs Hector is one of my favorite fight scenes. The choreography and intensity of the fight is just perfect. The minimal audio of the original cut too really amps up the anticipation of each blow.
@@SchwhatNow in the movie, yeah. But I am not so sure if you would go by the legend, I mean he was basically invincible he should have been the one fighting reckless and like an amateur...
@@jackwriter1908 Achilles was almost invincible yeah, but he took fighting seriously and didn't rely on his ability to save him. Edit - almost invincible in the roman myth. Original Greek had no mention of being dipped in the Styx.
@@SchwhatNow yes, yes almost invincible. Maybe he should have woren better shoes. Do you talk of the myth or the movie, because as far as I remember he was in the myth just a strong warrior, which surprise is because he is pretty hard to kill. But why would someone who can't be even be hurt fight savely? Why would he even have a shield? I mean a goddess had to tell a bowman where the weakspot was and then gave him even a poisened arrow. It's not like any human really knew he had a weakspot at all.
Your analysis of the Troy sword fight was amazing! I never noticed that before and can absolutely see it now how Achilles is toying with Hector from the start.
Sword of the stranger. That's the thing that got me in anime. Such a fun story(insane for a 14 year old) and i loved how "realistic" the fighting was. Sure lots of hidden movements and quick cuts but the few real actual clashes felt heavy and real.
I’m also a aspiring photographer that would like to get into content creation/film so watching your videos has really made me think about how to go about creating my videos/short films. From how I’d direct and frame fights and the individual beats involved to how to make exposition and dialogue not seem like such a drag. So I’d thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the knowledge and passion you guys pass on through these videos as it’s helped reawakened that passion and spark has thought lost years ago so please keep the content coming! I heard the Hector/Achilles fight was done as "Achilles is formally trained, Hector learnt on the battlefield". Might have been in the commentary track.
I am so happy that sword of the stranger was on here it made my day 👍 Should break down the fight scenes from samurai champloo aswell! Especially mugens fights!
The thing about Troy is it is a myth of an ancient warrior of Greece. They took Greek war techniques but made it stylized to make his character in a way, larger than life. That’s why this scene is so well done and is what they described as picking the city apart.
6:52 "Everything's about time in this fight." For those who never played League of Legends, Ekko's ultimate can rewind time back 4 seconds. About the fight, it first goes in children mode. As Ekko "loses", he "rewinds time" and the real fight happens. It's a nice reference for League players 🤷♂️.
When I was a kid, my best friend and I choreographed and practiced a dope fight scene on a playground. We came up with some cool beats in the fight and practiced it until it was super fast and smooth. We never did anything else after that but I'll never forget it.
HOW?! How do you still flawlessly deliver on these episodes?! It‘s so captivating watching you talk so passionate about these scenes! And please do a VFX Artist React on Arcane already, it‘s absolutely overdue at this point! :)
5:38 I feel like this shot deserves more emphasis, although perhaps it was a bit out of the scope for this video. The reason they can get away with *one* frame of the face is thanks to one of the most important rules of cinematography: Composition. Leading the eye. When the shot starts, there's only one object in view. There's no detail in the ground, the entire frame is very low contrast except for the sword itself. The line of the weapon and the amount of detail in the hilt should draw your eye there, close to center frame. That's where the hand shows up to grab it. The entire arm suddenly appearing in one frame doesn't distract from the sword, if anything it keeps your attention exactly where it left off because now there's a new thing there, and a new line pointing toward that spot. An animator might be tempted to add more frames of the arm coming in from the right to smooth out the motion, but they don't need that. They don't want that, because then it might fight for your attention. You're already looking where you're supposed to. One frame later, that's where the character's face flashes by. They know they don't need to double up on that frame, because you were already looking there. One more frame and it's out of view, but you're sure of what you saw and it's made its impact. That's one of the core things that makes some movies just feel good to watch. In a rapid succession of shots, if your eye is naturally being led to where it's supposed to focus after the next cut, you feel the intention of every shot without having to glance around the frame and figure out what's going on. Movies that fail to do that tend to feel exhausting to watch, even if you can't put your finger on why.
Yep. You can really feel this if you compare an action scene from an Michael Bay movie (Bad Boys 2, any Transformers movie) with Mad Max Fury Road or a John Woo action scene. All 3 directors use rapid editing, different in style but similar in tempo. George Miller keeps you laser focused on the center of the frame where all the action happens. Woo leads the awareness around like its a dance. Both can get very dynamic, chaotic and fast, but they never push it too hard so that you loose focus or get overwhelmed or loose your orientation in the scene. Bay doesn't give a shit about your awareness, he just throws (beautiful) images at you so fast that your Brain can't keep up with. You most likely will get overwhelmed and you loose orientation. In all fairness to Bay though, I think his movie 19 Hours hits the sweet spot because here his visual style matches the context of the movie perfectly and he seems to use it deliberately instead of randomly.
14:23, while you guys touched on the excellent rig designs, camera placement, all of that, I think a shout-out is needed also for a pretty realistic grenade pop. Pulling the pin with the thumb might have been a stretch (those pins are NOT easy to pull, for good reason), but when it goes off, there's not a massive fireball, there's not the gigantic explosive front. That much scaffolding would offer good protection from shrapnel, though the pressure wave would still suck. But for a movie, it's a pretty damn good deptiction.
Ugh I love the anime breakdown fight. More please. And I'm kind of hoping they get michelle yeoh on this series some day. Saw her break down some fights in another video and I really want to see her go more in depth.

And ive watched through appleseed and the final fantasy flick so many times, that this is a breath of fresh air to see something western thats full CGI and mature on screen. i wish more game to screen adaptations took this route. I was gutted when i heard last of us was gonna be live action with how good their ctscenes look.

Hahahahahaha I can never unsee that now lmaooo
lmao I noticed that too. Must be coming off a rough shooting schedule!
That's all Pitt and Bana that you see in camera! Pitt really looks taller than he actually is!
Pitt is 5'11". He's not "somewhat short" by any stretch of the imagination.
FINALLY SOME ARCANE! Was waiting forever in hope you guys would discuss some Arcane stuff.
Yes
For me the best fight is the first Vi vs Robot arm lady fight. The second one is also cool but not as good.
seriously though that show was a masterpiece
That show was soo good, so wonderfully done. I've played league a lot and it was good to see they didn't overdo it with all the characters. And the animation style was just beautiful
I definitely thought it would be on Animator's first, or VFX even, before thinking stunts
Genuinely love Gui just being part of the host rotation now. Grand stuff.
fr I enjoy every vid he's in, good energy.
So glad they talked about Sword of The Stranger. That’s been one of my favorite movies for years for it’s absolutely perfection of action choreography. So happy to see it getting love
Appreciate the shoutout from James & Gui!! That practice/test fight was done back in 2014 in 1 day. Time flies!!
Lord Gui has a ring to it lol… I appreciate Gui pulling weight this episode and showing his comfort
I agree but it would be funny if he had the title of duchess aswell
The knife fight in The King’s Man is something I’d love to see reacted too, such a clean fight and great story beats
Now I'm waiting for you guys break down Arcane even deeper in Animators Reacts, that'd be epic. Amazing vid btw

YES!
If I’m flipping channels and Troy is on I’m watching until that scene and replaying it over and over lol
That sword of the stranger fight scene is one i really love, so glad they took a look at it. The sword literally chipping away is such a good detail
THESE GUYS ARE SO LUCKYYYYY... I never would've expected to end up on a couch with the great Niko himself

Get John wu to analyze that clip on stuntmen reacts to "stuntmen reacts"
It was so satisfying!🤣
Also noticed that true mastery
Also that double “yep” at 13:03
That Troy fight between Achilles and hector is one of my all time favorite for all the reasons he says, I know a sword or weapons choreographer would say a lot of the movements wouldn’t happen in an actual fight but it’s all apart of the story, Achilles is the greatest warrior/swordsmen of all time, part of the reason he even joined the war was to fight hector and prove it, but the emotion of hector killing his cousin just added to it, if your Achilles and your the best and you know it, you’re gona do moves that no one else would ever try
i agree
however patroclus and achilles weren’t cousins, THE MOVIE LIES
@@wthleo I'm glad someone else knows that.
I would love if you broke down some more Arcane scenes, I think the story telling in some of the fights and explosions is just amazing.
I got tingles from that Arcane fight, both when seeing it on the show and watching it again right here, just an absolute masterpiece. I never got into League the MOBA but if Arcane is a sample of the type of cinematic story telling that can come from that world then I'm all in on that 100%
Troy is such an under appreciated film. It’s one of my absolute favorites of all time.
13:03 That double 'Yep.' by Gui and James.
Perfect reaction to Niko's remark.
Can confirm, there is a bunch of bts from when they were filming this that was in the Japanese news.
What's the tittle of the film in clip?

Vi and Cait, for instance, have an ego challenge when they see each other on opposite teams on who can catch (kill) the other one first.
i was sooo pleasantly surprised they reviewed sword of the stranger. that fight scene gives me goosebumps every time. and the soundtrack, SO GOOD
Things crossed you've got more Arcane stuff in the pipeline, it's absolutely gorgeous and it'd be fantastic if you got somebody who worked on it in for a full episode of animators.
We need a whole episode on Arcane! The visuals in that show are amazing
Finally some love for TROY. Even though many things in the movie fall behind with the actual Greek Mythology, they really did a great job showing the emotion on that fight without making new things up to make it flashy and stuff. 10/10
It's not the greatest movie ever made, but the action design, cinematography, and choreography in that movie are all bonkers.
@@PalmelaHanderson exactly. Plot wise has many wholes and inaccuracies in comparison with the real thing but yeah the choreography is sick
The sound design for the Hector/Achilles fight is also really well done. It's just a clean and clear soundscape.
Arcane is amazing looking. I'd love to hear more about how they did it
the Agora Commubnity yt channel has a really good interview with Arcane lead animator Alexis Wanneroy
Arcane was very clever how to took different audience members on different journeys.
For me, when the soundtrack song kicked in it took me completely out of the story and was so cringey, so the bludgeoning scene was an expected relief.
Well, they used very expensive computers, software and talent!
You're welcome.
Ekko vs Jinx was really amazing to watch , like in my opinion , one the best moments if not the best moments from the series
Like the whole animation style just changes it just shift into another gear you know . Like you know what happened just a bit ago and like and that tention and intensity and all of a sudden it just changes the whole style but still carries all of it .... It was just perfect ...

Why is no one pointing out Gui almost falling asleep at 15:20 🤣🤣🤣 love you guys! Keep up these videos!!

The towing of the body is stright out of the original story, the best thing this movie did was to just stick to the original.

Just saw it tonight and I wholeheartedly concur. They need to cover the vfx and stunts
The Guignolo (1980) - From a boat going at high speed he gets on a helicopter flying low above it (he had a thing for hanging from helicopters)
And there are many more.
I think he is well known and respected in Europe. I grew up in Bulgaria and everybody knows who he is and we admire so much. He was literally my first action hero on TV. And i can compare him more with Jackie Chan, because of the humor he had in many action scenes.
@@giannisksanthopoulos4300 Definitely. He was (and in his films still is) one of the most charming actors/ action stars ever.

The boat chase scene from Face/Off. Cage hanging off the side of a boat from a chain. Thats a crazy stunt right there!
Ikr sword of the stranger is more grounded to an extent. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has good taste in certain anime

I am so happy that sword of the stranger was on here it made my day 👍
Should break down the fight scenes from samurai champloo aswell! Especially mugens fights!
Yoooo
I loved all the talking about the storyline rather than just the technicality of the fight scenes. :)

I'd love to see a full react episode dedicated to arcane. 10/10 show with incredible art and design.
Ekko vs Jinx will be remembered in history as one of the greatest animated fights from this decade.
Yes!!!! Sword of the stranger doesn't get enough love :)
It's like a diamond in the rough, it's more grounded to an extent.
Finally someone shining light on the Arcane. Still think that show deserves one nice animators react episode.
I didn’t see what that movie was called
Funny thing - the scene from Arcane they showed before ends with exactly the same kind of pin pull of a grenade …
