Carlsbad Caverns’ formation is unique in that the slow dissolve of limestone by rainfall was joined by hydrogen-sulfide-rich water. What resulted was the formation of sulfuric acid. The acid dissolved limestone deeper and further as it settled between cracks in the rock, forming many of the lower areas and passages as well as large rooms where the water table level was.
Over a possible period of two million years, the water table dropped, the cave settled and cave formations, such as stalactites and stalagmites began to take shape. Large deposits of silt, clay, and gypsum were left behind as evidence of the birth of the cave.
At the age of 16 years, Jim White would discover Carlsbad Caverns for himself for the first time. After seeing a plume of bats emerge from the cavern’s entrance, he would return the next day with a rope, some wire, a hatchet, and a homemade lantern and set out to begin exploration.
A three-day exploration followed where Jim and a friend would continue into the cavern, exploring what is essentially today’s paved trail. The two boys discovered what is today referred to as the Big Room, The Queen’s Chambers, and the King’s Palace with only a string guiding them back to the surface.
The main cavern experience is unique in that the visitor can tour the cave unguided and at their own pace. Reservations for entry time are required and can be purchased online at recreation.gov. While visiting, visitors can utilize flashlights, headlamps, and flash photography is permitted.
Entry into the cavern can be through the natural entrance trail which is a 1.25-mile paved trail with a steep grade and many switchbacks. Due to the steepness of descending 750 feet into the cavern, it is not considered accessible.
The other entry point is via an elevator that descends down the 750 feet to the Big Room Trail. This too is a 1.25-mile trail that is relatively flat and allows for accessibility throughout parts of the Big Room. This trail is the most popular and features some of the most spectacular views of cave formations and relics from the past exploratory days.

I remember visiting the Carlsbad Caverns as a kid and seeing all the bats come out at night. I'll never forget it. Thank you for another great video.

Oh cool! We didn't manage to catch the bats this time as we had to take off pretty quickly to get to the next destination but I imagine they're amazing to see. I always enjoyed seeing the bats fly out from under the Congress Ave bridge in Austin. 👍

My family and I went there too, also saw the bats. Every year we went to Colorado also.
So many memories. Reminds me of my dad.. wish I could get those times back. I sure would have appreciated it more

Just finished hiking this yesterday. Not a lot of people at all so it ridiculously quiet; it was pretty awesome. We hiked the entire trail, beginning with the Natural Entrance. The smell on the way down wasn’t pleasant at all, but once you pass the cave swallows and enter the cavern, the rest of your senses take over. Everywhere you turn there was something new to look at. We came back for the bat flight program later and that was also a sight to see. Such an unforgettable experience.

Absolutely agree with everything you said. Similar experience. Unfortunately didn't have time to see the bat flight but I suppose that just leaves room to visit it again. 😅

Absolutely our pleasure! Seeing the caverns in a video is one thing but I think without having been there it's impossible to really portray the sense of awe one has when first entering it. It's truly a spectacular place. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. 😊

Excellent tour underground. As usual always nice to see the history behind it. I must say, they might have explored these caves in pitch dark, now that we have all the lighting, but must have been difficult to explore in the beginning. Nice structures of rock. I remembered a cave visited in Shenandoah National Park, called the Luray caverns. Thanks for rekindling my memories. Its nice feeling to be able to see these caves and be awe at the nature's natural formations.

It was pretty a pretty surreal and private bit for a while there. We thought we heard on a documentary once about Walt Disney getting a private tour (or requesting to stay overnight, we're not sure) and one could only imagine that feeling was similar.

Excellent video. I have watched over 100 videos and yours has the best clarity of the formations. Can you please tell me what brand/model camera you are using and if it's point and shoot or are you having to hold the shutter open for more light? Also, if it's ok to ask, how much it would cost me to get one? Thank you.
