They do have something more to offer than Lamy: Standard international ink cartridges. Lamy cartridges are waaaay more expensive.

Thanks for the review. I just started getting into fountain pens about a month ago after thinking I would NEVER like fountain pens. Now I see how addicting they are (at least for me). I would love to add one of these to my collection. Interesting to know that they're fighting with pencils.

Thanks for taking the time out to do this review, which I found very interesting. I'm looking for an everyday carry pen, that I can sit down and write with for long periods of time. I have been using a Lamy All Star, which is a good pen, well made, writes nicely and is almost there for my requirements, but the triangular grip section isn't quite right for my grip. I have tried a Faber Castell Loom, very nice pen, and has an excellent nib, but the grip section lets it down, especially if I'm wanting to use it for a long writing session.

Your reviews are always appreciated. Precise content with no fluff. I'd expect this to be made in China, like the Loom, yes? And from your comparison, it seems bulkier and with a faint tri port grip vs. the Loom. Since they're so close in pricing, and the nib is smaller and non-glorious, what market segment would this appease? It's baffling at times what manufacturers consider to distinguish their products. Thanks for all you do, the [now beardless] Bard has orated again!

  • @strshooter7399

Solid review FB. I recently picked up a blue Hexo, and enjoy the dark color, and it being lightweight. I did find the nib very scratchy on std notebook paper, and like a nail. On Rhodia 90 gsm, wonderfully smooth. Paper makes a huge difference. I find the Faber-Castell SS nibs to be excellent off the Looms, and the older FC Basic ~ same nib. Any suggestions, if you know, on how to pull the nib on the Hexo? Just wondering, though I doubt a Loom nib would fit... . Nice little pen, but the nib is it's Achilles tendon. I'd opt for another Loom versus another Hexo if I was in the market. Thanks for the review.

I already love many of Faber Castell's products but thanks to you I was thrilled to discover they make such desirable pens! And pens are what I collect. FC makes almost every product artists want from "wallet" acrylics + oils (12, 12 ml tubes for $15 - incredible) colored pencils, drawing tools and as if this isn't enough for those of us who LOVE art supplies, they grow a truckload of wood every hour. Worthy of support. Thank you for this chance to try FC's fountain pen. It'll come to a caring home in Canada :)

Thoroughly enjoy your reviews, & can definitely say the positive one given to the Loom was the decisive factor to the acquisition of my first Faber-Castell, which has been an absolute dream. Very curious about this model, which unfortunately i'll most likely have to wait until a trip overseas to buy, since distribution of FC products here in Méjico is exasperatingly rare. Greetings & congratulations on your wonderful channel. I pray the isaias storm does not affect you in any major form.

I just received the black model. Have been using it for about one day now. Love the feel, look and the EF nib is more on the fine side. Smooth as expected from a Faber-Castel nib but definitely not of the same caliber as that of the Loom . Enjoying using it immensely.

@@greggregson1365 Exactly. The odds are not great, but entering is fun. (Of course, that is how some people get into trouble with gambling.) Also in this case the giveaway serves two purposes: (a) To avoid tainting the review with free item, the giveaway disposes of it. And while manufacturer might want the more expensive item returned, or passed onto next reviewer, for the cheap ones giveaway is easier/cheaper way to go. ie. Not worth reconditioning mass produced inexpensive pen for resale. (b) Increase commenter participation, and thus metrics, which is good for the manufacturer as well as the channel.

  • @craigkregson3060
    @craigkregson3060 4 года назад

I wonder if that’s the same nib as the one they use on the Grip. If it is, I will admit that it can be quite a bit underwhelming compared to the Loom’s nib. It seems clear that FC is trying to reach a larger market of entry level FP users, and I wonder if thats because some of their mid and higher level pens aren’t selling as well. Trying to get a greater share in the entry level can probably be difficult, because everyone has their tried and true pilot metros, TWSBI Ecos and Lamy Safaris. I think it’ll be hard for FC to compete with those.

Hi David, one more thing I would like you to know. The shapes under the cap made to self alligned the cap with the barrel also resembles the top of our 'Sikh' holly temple (Gurudwara). And the concept of both is to align. Temple is the place to align your mind, soul, thoughts with the God and here the cap profile with the barrel profile.
    Good Day.

Hi David-while I wish the Hexo had the larger FC nib, I think its section is superior to both the Loom and the Ambition. Also, if it doesn’t dry up like the Ondoro, I’d say it’s all round pretty good value and I’m into it.

  • @morphmacca

How odd that they would add another pen to the Loom's price category!
I actually think this is intended to compete more directly with the Lamy Safari/Al-Star/Vista trio than the Loom currently does. It has a similar look to it, I think; That wide clip and the flattened faces on the barrel. It's not a carbon-copy, but it reminds me of it.
    Food for thought.

Great review, as always, David! I like the design a lot more than previous editions from GvF-C. It’s straight, without looking edgy. The proportion of plastic keeps the weight within reasonable limits for me, who mostly prefers light pens. The fact there’s room for a spare cartridge tells me that a Pelikan long cartridge will fit, which represents a sufficient capacity for my writing habits. A nib with a bit of feed-back is nice when note-taking in the wild. My super smooth nibs tends to slide in all directions under stress, and legibility suffers.
