One time in middle school history class I had to stand in front of the class to give a presentation about my great uncle who’d died in the war from stepping on a land mine. I held up his Purple Heart medal and as I got to the part about him stepping on the land mine, I began uncontrollably laughing. It’s never happened to me before or since, but I was absolutely mortified and was trying SO hard to stop laughing because it was completely inappropriate to laugh about. Eventually I gave up and just walked out of the classroom laughing and never finished the presentation. It didn’t help that I was a very shy, awkward kid and no one really knew me. I still can’t imagine how ridiculous it must’ve seemed. Ugh, I was so mortified lol.

I’m a retired Army Infantryman and trust me, we’d be laughing as well but obviously we’d mourn our loss. We’d be saying crap like; “so, where’d John disappear to? Anyone seen him?” And some wise ass would reply; “oh, he’s hanging around the tree.” Or maybe this; “ok, who’s next on point? Any volunteers?”

One time in class, I and my friend were laughing so hard for like 10 minutes straight that the teacher made us stand and explain why we were laughing. Now I kid you not, I swear neither my friend nor me remembered that why we were laughing. We were just laughing because the other one is laughing. Needless to say, he lectured us about our behavior the rest of the class.
I went through the same thing at University. Eventually my friend and I were asked to leave the class until we got control. Our laughter got even worse until we collapsed on the floor of the corridor, holding our aching sides and begging for air. To this day I can't recall what made us first start laughing.

My roommate and I, in college, were looking through a Bloom County book, when we spotted the strip where one of the kids or Opus plugged Bill the Cat's tail into a wall socket. It showed him all thin and charred still with his big eyes. We were laughing so hard and for so long that I started to fear for my safety. That whole thing about dying laughing was suddenly very real for me. I literally couldn't breathe, but it is still to this day one of my fondest memories.

My daughter was in a bad relationship. I just loss my oldest daughter to suicide, and my oldest son to drug overdose just within a few months apart.
