My Great Grandfather owned the land that the Mosport track is on. It was his ranch in the 1950's. And sold it to the people that wanted to build the track
I think the McLaren and the NASCAR engine absolutely fit for Gilles - he was a North American with very North American tastes (he was slightly more willing to negotiate the strangeness of Europe than his brother, who had a pretty good opportunity to race in a competitive F3 team but found Italian food, for example, as just too weird ) - I think his connection with Ferrari hides that from us sometimes. Having said that...he could almost be describing his Ferrari from the previous year (Nigel Roebuck's description of his car coming onto the straight at Dijon completely sideways across the road...lap after lap, is both terrifying and hilarious). Nobody, afaik, has ever modelled that car. Can you imagine a full field of those - no torsional rigidity (or that of a wet lettuce, as I think Postlethwaite described it), hardly any downforce and a ton of power that came in like an ON switch. That would be a car to try and get a handle on... Gilles was my earliest hero, I remember being numbed by his accident the day before my 15th birthday.

The MoSport track has been changed, the track is not exactly like it was. But what has not changed... is the racing line. You can drive the "old" track and new using exactly the same racing lines... It is wonderfully modified, tiny tweaks here and there, giving just a bit more room off the racing line and increasing safety.
Yeah, the biggest changes to the track itself (i.e. not runoff, kerbing, pit road, etc.) since it opened are that it's been widened and the hump at the end of the backstretch was lowered to prevent blowovers.
There used to be a huge grandstand on the start line which gave a view of half the track. Basically, the track loses spectator features while exclusive buildings for the uber wealthy get erected.
It depends, but with very little downforce, the steering could actually be fairly light. There's no real weight over the front nose in an MR car, so the steering on MR cars are usually pretty delicate if there's not a lot of caster in it.
Fantastic idea. I still have my copy of Autosport magazine where he gave that interview! Very chillingly, in that same interview, he describes how bad the 1982 ground effect cars were at various circuits, and he says Zolder will be a killer, and we know what happened a few weeks later. Gilles would have loved this car..Most of his F1 career was during the ground effect era which was the worst possible time for this magician. With this type of car the rest of the competition apart from Ronnie needn't have bothered turning up. The only thing I would take from the modern era would be the gear shift paddles so drivers could concentrate more on controlling the car. More power would also be better but not a turbo. Despite his heroics in 1981 Gilles hated turbos and wanted instant response. You probably didn't want to use such recent engines but the F1 V10 3 litre engines in 2005 before the following year's rule changes were the most powerful F1 normally aspirated engines ever, with the Honda RA005E the most powerful of all at only a little short of 1000 bhp and much lighter than the 5 litre one you chose. I'm sure if this engine had been around in Gilles' time he would have preferred it. Regarding the car's handling, there's not as much oversteer as I would have expected. I'm sure if Gilles was driving a car like this for real he would have been sliding it around a lot more

The Ferrari 043 v12 engine of the nineties was naturally aspirated and had more than 820 bhp, also Gilles first Ferrari, the 312T was not a ground effect car... both more appropriate for a Ferrari pilot than a mclaren with a Nascar engine
Exactly, I thought: "He's being such a stereotypical american ;) about this..........It doesn't need to be a V8!" Make it a V10 or V12 for better sound. And let's face it that Ferrari V12 and the 3.0 L V10s are some of the best sounding F1 engines ever! As evidenced by the Head turner that Alonso put on at Yas Marina.

something i discovered recently from reading john barnard's book, was that the ferrari that GV died in was a composite tub, not an aluminium one as i had always assumed. JB basically said even by the time he arrived in italy that ferrari still didnt really understand carbon fibre and that if Gilles had flipped an MP4 instead he would have walked away...same with Pironi i guess...
I'm pretty certain it was an aluminum tub. It was, apparently, the twisting of the tub, as it dug into the sand, that deformed the anchor points for his seat and belts - hence he was ejected from the car. I believe that's one of the reasons they moved away from sand traps. Also, had the car been carbon then it wouldn't have suffered that deformation, that's probably what Barnard was suggesting - and the front of Pironi's car was just ripped open, leaving his legs completely exposed (something similar happened to Tambay's car at Las Vegas in '81 - he was lucky to walk away from that)
@@colinmarkwick141 100% not the case...and that was my original assumption...he basically says in his book that pothelthwaite, ferrari and anyone else for that matter in F1 did not understand the properties or manufacturing processes of carbon fibre properly. thus everything they built with it was less strong than aluminium, not stronger as it should have been. gordon murrary also had some failed attempts at building with it. gravel traps disappearing from tracks did not really begin until the early 2000's. lastly, the car was not even in gravel, it dug into the track side grass after hitting the rear of jochen mass' march...
If you read the wiki page for the 126C it mentions ‘first genuine all monocoque chassis’, ‘honeycomb panels’ and something about it being similar to the previous year’s independent teams (i.e. the MP4). Honey comb aluminium is the metallic part of a carbon fibre composite material...

I actually use that to reduce the size of some livery's, because even using the amazing compression in Content Manager, some liveries are just insanely heavy for my computer. But, in the case of a single livery just like this one, it's nice to be able to give some color and variance to the starting grid. With this car, by only using the "flood fill" function and paint the car with other colors, you can already achieve that. Keep up the great and informative content. Cheers!
Yes. Started following f1 in 1959. 1st live event in 1964. 100+ live attended since. Lived the complete GILLES ERA. 2 Heros = Gilles & Tazio. True "all in" artists. They would puke at today's "limos" , drivers "aids". F1 is dead to me now. Change It.
Jacques Laffite said, after coming second to Gilles at Jarama in 1981 (the closest F1 race ever raced, with the first 6 in the same second), "only Gilles could have passed Gilles today". Well, I guess we just saw that with your Mod! Try it at Tremblant!
The type of car you're describing in this video is what Formula One was in Australia, before Australia adopted the French/International rules. It was subsequently renamed to Formula 5000 IIRC.
This thing sounds like a BRM V16 but behaves in an even angrier manner ! It feels like a flying death coffin ! Another thing, you can't post a direct link to download the car, but is there another place you can link where we can get it maybe ? Awesome content nonetheless
A spectacle the fans would enjoy, man that's what I'm talking about. I don't watch much modern racing, maybe some V8 Supercars and those cool stadium super truck races - but not F1, rally, GT3, NASCAR - none of that. Because our incredible engineering skills have designed all the untamed rawness out of racing cars that made racing exciting for me. Just my opinion, not fact. I just prefer less refined machines even if they are slower.
Hey there GP, Newby to your content. Enjoying it especially IndyCar. Could you do a video on setting up the oval race parameters in rF2 It's a fantastic road racing sim. Are custom made oval tracks a option??? Iracing is 1st Nr2003 2nd All other sim's seem to be chasing these two.
discovered your videos a few weeks ago, great content ! there's a way better version of Gilles Montreal circuit out there if you want Also, would it be possible to have the fictionnal cars you show with a download option ? they have an insane potential for online races with a club or something
I feel that with all the improvements that we've had since then, specially with regard to Power Units. A modern ideal would be a little different, at least faster.
During the 1970s there was a McLaren M23 which raced in Australia, first with a Leyland V8 and later with a five litre Chevrolet. Its driver, John McCormack won the Australian Driver’s Championship in it, I think. They were good for between 500 and 520 hp in the day but with terrible reliability. The new S5000 cars, which appeared in the support races for the Australian Grand Prix this year, are preset at 560 hp and as far as I know, they haven’t had an engine blow yet.
Lewis Hamilton said he loves the sound of NASCAR engines. He was at the Daytona 500 one year, after the hybrid era started, and said they sounded like proper race cars. If F1 didn’t want the big manufacturer money, they’d great engines; lots of horsepower, really durable and reliable, and a hell of a lot cheaper than the hybrids or those shrieking V10’s and V8’s.
Look up John Mc Cormack, McLaren M23 Formula 5000 that raced here in Australia, it ran a Leyland 5lt alloy engine. He won the 1977 Australian drivers championship in it known as the Gold star. I have pics if you're interested. Toughy. I like your work keep it up.
"March 1982"? Quite sure the Zolder weekend was in May. My first F1 exprience on TV was Monaco 1982 just days before my 10y birthday and remember commentators speaking of recent tragidy of Gilles. Apart from that - exceptional channel!
The quote from Gilles was also published in german "Rallye Racing" mag early in 1982... I was in Zolder on friday (walkaround) and saturday (standing at the bridge on that little hill leading to Terlamen corner). After that terrible accident it was impossible for me, to watch that race on sunday and I left the circuit late evening with no hope and so many tears in my eyes, that I could hardly follow the road in front 😢 Salut Gilles 🍁🇨🇦🍁
.. and just as i was writing a comment about the wheelbase, that even Gilles would've wanted a tad longer car.. he says it.. And i do have an idea. I don't usually do tracks for Assetto Corsa but i could make an exception and you could try driving upside down.
would the ideal F1 have had such a heavy engine though? From what I can see looking quickly is the most powerful non-turbo engines in F1 gave about 700bhp so maybe its worth finding one of those.
Way more powerful than that. In the last year of the 3 litre V10s in 2005 they were generating nearly 1000bhp. The Honda RA005E is generally thought to have been the most powerful of these.
to fix the buggy delayed rpm needle... you have to disable the dashboard features of the shaders mod thingy... not having AC on right now to check the exact option... but can look later on. ;)

Change It.
Agree 💯% with your words 🍁🇨🇦🍁
Jacques Laffite said, after coming second to Gilles at Jarama in 1981 (the closest F1 race ever raced, with the first 6 in the same second), "only Gilles could have passed Gilles today". Well, I guess we just saw that with your Mod! Try it at Tremblant!
Could you do a small tutorial on how to get started modifying car models live you've been doing lately? Anyway loving these videos! keep it up GP
I'd race this mod non-stop. Brilliant.
Challenging car to drive I think Gilles would be happy to drive this beautiful beast...thank you for the experience...💖
so Villeneuve wanted to drive early Can-Am :)
Would love to see some online lobbies with this car. Looks like it’d be some right fun
The type of car you're describing in this video is what Formula One was in Australia, before Australia adopted the French/International rules.
It was subsequently renamed to Formula 5000 IIRC.
Sir, I salute you! Gilles would have loved this car. And he would have been the fastest in it. Probably crashed a lot, but still the fastest...
Loos like a Chevy-Ilmor twin cam Indy engine to me.
Great video. Can you tell us a little bit more on how you put the cars together please?
Could you do a video on setting up the oval race parameters in rF2
It's a fantastic road racing sim. Are custom made oval tracks a option???
Iracing is 1st
Nr2003 2nd
All other sim's seem to be chasing these two.
Ah yes these is the kind of content you can't find anywhere else
Funny enough i had a race just an hour ago at MoSport in the 55Mod of GPL with the Maserati 250F. I love it.
this was awesome! Try putting an 80s turbo era engine in a 70s f1 car...or maybe a 60s f1 car
No!!!!!!! Despite his 1981 heroics Gilles hated turbos. He wanted an instant response.
@@ViN-kr3ri lol I just thought it would be a good idea to see if Jake can make that mod just for shits and giggles
Looks like a car only Gilles could handle! Fun idea!
discovered your videos a few weeks ago, great content !
there's a way better version of Gilles Montreal circuit out there if you want
Also, would it be possible to have the fictionnal cars you show with a download option ? they have an insane potential for online races with a club or something
Mosport might be my favourite skip-barber track in iracing. That blind corner over a downhill in vr is cool. Much nicer than Laguna.
I feel that with all the improvements that we've had since then, specially with regard to Power Units. A modern ideal would be a little different, at least faster.
This is what f1 needs today.
Take this on Nordschliffe or another track with a long straight to see its top speed.
This is the type of Formula 1 car I'd watch race. With a Nascar for a heart.
Sounds great too
Everytime Laps says "uuaah" you all have to take a shot.
God, sometimes I just marvel at the mirrors on these things. Exactly the camera angle that they stress in old racing movies.
Villeneuve actually raced in Can Am with a crap Walter Wolf car in 1977. Those cars had little downforce about 500hp from 5 litre Chevy motors.
GPLaps
F1 Car Idea
Mix the best parts of the recent eras if F1.
90s aerodynamic simplicity, 2000s engines, shorter 2010 car as abase with 2020 tires
amazing driver
How about a video that boils down howto swap an engine and tires/wheels? Just really wanna try that car
you should release those cars on race department, would be a huge success imho
"March 1982"? Quite sure the Zolder weekend was in May. My first F1 exprience on TV was Monaco 1982 just days before my 10y birthday and remember commentators speaking of recent tragidy of Gilles.
Apart from that - exceptional channel!
Gilles made the quote in Rio in March 1982
The first downhill (turn 2) at Mosport was originally off-camber and the runoff was just grass. Terrifying scenario.
Sounds reminiscent of the supercharged 1.5 V16 that B.R.M. produced in the early fifties. That engine produced well over 500 hp but was very fragile.
would the ideal F1 have had such a heavy engine though? From what I can see looking quickly is the most powerful non-turbo engines in F1 gave about 700bhp so maybe its worth finding one of those.
Nascar engines aren’t that heavy. Only about 70 pounds heavier than a DFV
V12 engines of the nineties got over 800 bhp
@Charles Gnarley exactly. The 94 Ferrari 043 engine was "over 750 bhp" officially, maybe even over 800 in reality
Way more powerful than that. In the last year of the 3 litre V10s in 2005 they were generating nearly 1000bhp. The Honda RA005E is generally thought to have been the most powerful of these.
You need that weight to help throw the back end out lol
Fantastic. I believe you could upload only the modified files for the original mod, as an addon without issues.
I love the manual shift
This thing is insane. I’d love to see this thing irl
What a creation! Amazing. Maybe a V12 version plz..?
Oh Canada!
to fix the buggy delayed rpm needle... you have to disable the dashboard features of the shaders mod thingy... not having AC on right now to check the exact option... but can look later on. ;)
I'm surprised the 917/30 had such narrow tires; most Can-Am cars used 26" rears IIRC.
i don't know why but the slow updating RPM gauge give me nostalgia for an era the i wasn't even alive for
Thanks for showcasing Mosport. It remains a "real" race track, along with places like Road America. They are a dying breed, sadly. Sanitized cookie cutter Tilke-tracks seem to be the norm. Sigh.....
Have a look at the new S5000 series in Australia. Updated version of this .
Can someone make this car "from scratch"
This car would be awesome for a league series !!
You should do a time trial vid of this on a 60's Indy
