Great video, nice car. BTW the 302 Ford is not "primarily a truck engine". The small block Ford series (260, 289, 302, 351) were the core engines in all US Ford cars from the early 1960s through the early 1980s. They were the mainstay of many Ford race cars, including the GT40 family and the original Shelby Cobra.
Gotcha, that makes sense! I know this car features a similar transaxle to the ford GT40, so its almost like an opened wheel GT40 with better brakes. Thanks for the extra info!
Bob McL I owned a 1970 Cougar Eliminator, Boss 302' which I purchased new in 1970. It was equipped from the factory, with a Boss 302 engine, oil cooler, Hurst 4speed floor shifter, Detroit Locker, and a Drag Pack rear end. Feeling feisty after attending a nite stock car race, on the way home on a 4 lane highway, with four people in the car, I buried the needle, at 155 plus, miles per hour. I only backed of the throttle when the front end began to float, and steering became dicey. I'm fairly certain that it's the only car to ever spin out at Road America, with an inverted canoe on top.
@@Taurcan so cool! I only ever saw one Cougar Eliminator, and only a handful of the sister Boss 302 Mustangs up here in Canada. But I still remember both models well. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Bob McL One correction. The windsor/sbf engine family was used until 1996. Other notable car the ford small black/windsor was used in is the Saleen s7. They used a bored and stroke 351 to 427/ 7L.
I'm a huge fan of racing against AI like yourself, it would be pretty sweet if you could do a sort of video/tutorial on how you usually set up the AI, getting them just right seems impossible half the time.
Not sure you still need to know this, but Race Weekends are your friend in AC. 2 reasons: 1. The AI tweaks their setup in practice runs, things like gear ratios, fuel settings, wing settings, which makes a huge difference 2. Qualifying sorts the grid by pace, not just by AI skill. This is really important if you have a mixed car grid, because it effectively orders cars by the average of their skill and the car's fit to the circuit That's a real quick thing - of course there's plenty to do with the track and car AI files too
@@VonBlade In the US they introduced the Honda Fit engine, in the rest of the world they’re still using the ancient original Kent engine. But there are a handful of modern cars being made still.
Racing today needs a redo. IRL this would be a cool series of open wheeled simple and accessable parts. Formula 5000 lite. Engines not over 400bhp and low rpm but needs to find safe ways to build.
Awesome video! My family and I actually watched our first-ever IMSA race when they were here last season. My family were more or less a captive audience, but I think they still enjoyed it 😉
Pretty much every Ford had the 302 Windsor as a stock option, it wasn't just a truck engine. That Windsor was the same 5.0 that powered cars into the 90's.
This idea is what I think modern cars should be, perhaps give this some slicks and a bit more power and some safety devices and we've got an incredible race car.
I dont typically like the old style open wheel cars for some reason, but i downloaded this on a whim, and man is it a fun car to drive. I had no idea about the VIR mod either, so im excited to drive it again, i really enjoyed it in forza 7, and never thought to find it for AC.
Thank you for two surprise contents I never thought about. Without this video I never had tried the porknose, which seems to be a fabulous car. And this track...what a beauty...have to try this. So thank you for another great video!
Thank you very much for posting this video! I've been watching your playlists and wondering whether it would be possible to create, in real life, a 1960's style retro racing formula that would be a lot of fun for fans to watch. This car seems to indicate that it would be technologically possible! The only drawback of racing this car in real life might be the driver safety aspect. Could a car like this meet modern open wheel safety standards? Obviously no halo, but what about a crash resistant safety zone in the cockpit, so a driver can crash it at high speed and walk away afterwards with nothing more than a few bruises?
Between this mod and the “Gilles’ Dream” video from a few weeks ago, I guess the question is whether an authentic Formula 5000 carset exists for any sim (or heck, the S5000 formula they’re trying to get off the ground in Australia). That’s the content GPLaps craves!
i think that would be a great car for an online series :) Simracingsystem is/was doing collaborations with content creators to host online races. Maybe that would be interesting for you? I totally would participate :)
The 289 wasn't a "truck" engine. Sure it was used in 1/2 pickup trucks but was used in way more Ford cars than trucks. Just as an example my first car was a 1966 Mustang which had a 289HO V8 and 3 speed transmission. These engines and it's successor the 302 V8 was used throughout it's vehicle luneup.
I watched a lot of AMA Superbike racing from VIR several years ago. It's a very good circuit indeed and nice to just look at as well. Btw I just began to wonder: How do you come out with a 16:9 aspect ration video when you do the actual racing in 21:9 or whatever aspect ration your ultra widescreen display is?
Obviously they're front rather than mid engines but this isn't a million miles away from the Caterham 420R racing in the UK, no downforce, open(ish) wheels, grippy tyres, and really close racing.
I have to recalibrate mine every now and then, especially if I alt-tab out and back at some point, because it drifts to the left for some reason. The game can be finicky with the controls at times.
Jeez LAPS! I was watching your video here and paused it so I could do some of my own (youtube stuff on one of my videos) and I clicked on yours and YOU SOUND LIKE ME!! SAME VOICE! For such high quality content this channel is so underrated.
I'd say most people watching rate it highly so wouldn't call it underrated! He's growing well though and it's good to see the recognition coming in.
Extremely high quality but very niche content. And that is okay imo, wont pull in big numbers but it will build a very very tight community
I mean, Mr Broadsword himself is a fan too so... I don’t doubt his potential to grow if the algorithm plays nice.
You could NOT HAVE PICKED A BETTER TRACK! And this formula should be a reality. The cost would be so low and it would be fun to watch!
Holy crap that version of tachometer pulse is perfect. Little details done right make for a great overall package, Pessio is a top-notch dev.

Formula Ford is alive and well today!

1:05 - not sure of the specific year, but it's fairly safe to say all F1 cars post 1960 had disc brakes. Jaguar had 'em on their sports cars by '53.
I would 100% watch a spec series of these.
Glad to see VIR getting some attention - it's one of the best-kept secrets in motorsports.

Went to my first there back in '14 still remember the epic battle between the Risi Ferrari and Falken Porsche
I bet this would be a hoot to drive on the Nordschleife.
What a stunning circuit and car!!!! Love your passion and knowledge for the historic side....great content!
I love the attention to detail in this mod, the handling and gauges especially.
In IMSA the other year, Corvette, Porsche, and Ford had an amazing battle around here. VIR is a gem!
Thanks so much Jake, I love the way you keep finding these little gems. Well done.
We need a pork nose/ alexis-Russell ford multi-class race at Goodwood

IMSA, Trans-Am, and SRO GT use the classic layout (3.27 mi) at VIR. AMA/MotoAmerica uses the North Course (2.25 mi).

Great fun! More of a F5000 car with that thunderous 5.0l engine :) Great to race against the GrandPrixLegends '67 Mod and Formula 5000 Mod cars.
this car at the 1988 suzuka(without the chicane) is certain to be a banger of a race.
Ahhh I was hoping you'd cover the Porknose after you showed off the Russell thing!

There is a Formula 5000 modpack for assetto corsa, based on the classic cars of the late 60's and early 70's.

Kinda reminds me of the Gordon Murray Lightweight Rocket Car from the mid 2000's
Has there ever been mention of where to get the pit board display for AC? I'd really love to use it in my little fantasy 1967 Championship
Yes, It should be this mod here: www.racedepartment.com/downloads/classic-pitboard.16328/
@@GPLaps Sweet! Thanks so much GP. Love your videos and streams! :).
Cool track
Thx for the video. Amazing like ever 👌
The Summary (race position) you get at the end of each lap is really good. Is that a mod? Where can i get it please?
Fun Fact: NASCAR Truck Series did a very successful test at VIR, I’m not sure if they ever raced it though
What is now the ARCA East Series used to race there on the north short course

I would've loved to see that thing fly through the esses in the standard layout.
Jake have you tried the De Tomaso Pantera of the same author? It's amazing and so hard to drive.
What’s the app showing the relative times at every finished lap after finish line? I’ve been trying to find it, but without luck
The podium for this race was: 1) Bell
2) Bivens
3) Devoe
May I ask what mod that display your lap and position each lap? (9:43)
I often raced without any hud (Crew Chief only)
I've gone to VIR! To the kart track, anyway :(
Even in the rental karts it's great fun

Using a 302 would make this car more of a generic Formula A car rather than Formula 1. Formula A eventually would turn into Formula 5000.
Im entertain👍
Single seater with a 5 liter truck motor?
Sounds like Formula 5000
Throw a hellcat engine in it
I can never get Assetto corsa to work right... I cant even get controllers to work with properly...

someone should make this thing in real life.
1 mn 12 : passer à autre chose....switch to something different
I thought this car was one of the worst handling models of its kind. No amount of setup will make it much better.
