  • Ivory Coast native Mamadou Kamara works by day as an NYPD traffic cop and moonlights as the imam at a mosque in the South Bronx. Begun with a handful of members in 2008, Masjid Ebun Abass now draws many worshippers from the growing West African immigrant community. The mosque, on the site of a former pharmacy, has been transformed into a thriving hub. But success brings a new challenge.
So many worshippers come on Friday afternoons that dozens of people have to pray on the sidewalk. Kamara says the time has come to find a more spacious - and permanent - space for the Bronx's growing Muslim population.
