Canton Avenue is a street in Pittsburgh's Beechview neighborhood which is the steepest officially recorded public street in the United States. Canton Avenue is 630 ft (190 m) long (the hill is about 213 feet long) and is claimed to include a 37% grade 21 feet (6.4 m) long. The Guinness Book of World Records says Baldwin Street, in Dunedin, New Zealand, is the world's steepest street with a gradient of 34.8%.This record is disputed; Pittsburgh news and international media have claimed Canton Avenue is the steepest street in the world. The United States record is also disputed, as Bradford Street in San Francisco includes a 39% grade nine meters long[11] and Waipio Valley Road has sections as steep as a 45% grade.
Great video, Canton is so much steeper than it looks on camera! If you're still in Pitsburgh, you should check out Ferndale. It's even steeper (some claim it's 47% but I'd estimate 37-39%), There are no cobbles, so it's actually a little easier in my opinion. I was there last week and some locals showed me around. Definitely worth a visit!
Honored for the comment mitch, injoy all your videos, top notch. We will deffinaly have to check that out for sure, we live about an hour North of Pittsburgh. The cobble stone was tuff lots of crisscross action to keep balance. We are looking forward to seeing your video of Canton ave !!!
Some lady at a shop in PA said she lives on beechview and all I could think was how is this kind of infrastructure allowed? It's own city even said "you have to conquer it." Driving here is miserable!
Without doing extensive research I know El Paso Florentino street in Mexico City has a total incline of almost 45 degrees. It is most definitely steeper than Canton Ave, and yes Mexico is in America. On a recent trip to Cusco, Peru I could swear some streets were even steeper, but then again I'm getting old.
Guaranteed ,in winter, a small amount of rain as the temperature approaches freezing will turn that cobblestone street into a sheet of ice that even salt trucks would find kit almost impossible to climb. I wouldn't want to be a mailman on that street.
@@mrvwbug4423 I kiked an English three speed Louisanna in the 1970s, it is doable, Please note Louisanna Avenue is a flght of steps the City is known for: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steps_of_Pittsburgh#/media/File:Pittsburgh_city_steps_orphan_house_with_stairs-only_access.jpg
Canton might technically be steepest, but is very far from the most impressive hill in Pittsburgh, Potomac is crazy long and steep, rialto is crazy, ravine, and others are way harder to bike up, i did rialto on a bike as a teenager, now at 45 i wouldn't even want walk up rialto lmao, you could've atleast planted an electric motor in your cranks lmao!!
Beechwood? Must be a new neighborhood in Pittsburgh they just added??? Also, not the steepest in the world, it literally says exactly what it is and where you are on the sign your standing 5ft from. Smdh...
I can't for the life of me figure out why 2 people that have so much obvious athletic ability, had so much trouble on the "'STEEPEST HILL ON EARTH!" 🙄 All the people in the comments lauding a this as some sort of miraculous feat shows just how far this overweight, out of shape country has fallen. Geesh.
Yes Pittsburgh is a Very old City and many of it's streets started out as a path that People on Horse or foot used then turned in to a Street. and these cobble stones are as slick as ice when the leaves fall off the trees.

Check GCN, they have done videos on an even steeper climb in the Italian Alps. Even a pro hillclimb racer needed MTB gearing to get up it.
Will do thanks for the recommendation!!

I’m from Pittsburgh. There are about 10 others in the area almost as steep.
Extremely hilly !!
That was awesome, fun to watch.
Something we have wanted to do for a little while, it was a fun adventure. Good to hear from ya weather is still holding out!
Some lady at a shop in PA said she lives on beechview and all I could think was how is this kind of infrastructure allowed? It's own city even said "you have to conquer it." Driving here is miserable!
Can see the GCN network film crew be there in 2..1...!
Fantastic trip fun challenge!!
Time to petition this!
My legs are burning just watching this! 😂 Awesome challenge
It was intense hard to capture on camera how steep it really was. So much fun !
holy crap. strong work
It was a challenge for sure !
Nice! I’ve heard of this place. Never seen it before. Good one.
It was so much fun!!! Very challenging and exciting trip
Soo cool that's a big hill
@domkuliasa4409 it was tuff great challenge
There is a street in CT, which approaches 35% grade on the right-side. Short but sweet.
Heck yeah
Ugh - I was having anxiety watching this - not to mention sweaty hands! Good job guys!
It was quite the challenge fun times, always an adventure
Yes, it was crazy, just like biking in the Himalayas. 🙄
I think going sledding on this hill would be a much more exciting video for you 2 to make. Yes, that's a challenge!
Now that would be exciting. You would be flying
That sounds like a death sentence!
@@benkrauss5041 Where's your sense of adventure?

Very nice I bet it hard to ride up !!
The trick is to zig-zag across the entire road width until the top. It makes the climb much longer but at a much more gradual incline.
Yeah deffinalty the way to go !!
Works great unless there is traffic. 😁

No doubt !
That's a crazy hill. Thanks for showing it to us.
Pretty wild, it was hard to even walk on !!
Wowza! 😅that’s insane
So much fun !! And challenging
She hit the bricks.
I don't know what would be worse, cycling up that street or down!
No doubt !
Down might be sketch on a road bike on rim brakes, but no biggie on a modern MTB.

It's only 600ft.! What the hell are you talking about?
Gotta get a rolling start like the DD riders
It was fun deffinatly. We needed a run at it for sure !!
My 30 front 51 rear Epic might get me up that😅
It was fun
arkansas has got street like that- just as steep
Quite a challenge!!!
You guys are crazy
It was a ton of fun.
Oh yeah, that's really an insane challenge. LOL. What the hell is wrong with everyone?
theres no neighborhood inPittsburgh called Beechwood. Try Beechview
💯 thank you
I'm sorry but the sign "Continental United States", as in the 48 states not including Alaska or Hawaii or any of its US territories.
🚵♂️🚵♂️🚵♂️
Hawaii has a steeper street.

" 37 degrees (or 37%)"
Degrees and percentage aren't the same thing. 37% = 20.3 degrees.
Nice Math !!!
@@ReimaginedAdventures You could actually correct the description.
I can climb that in my sleep. Let me charge up my E bike first. 😆🤙
🤣🤣 we could of used that for sure what a climb
Good test for e bikes.
It certainly is not the steepest street in America. Lombard St in SF is.

Wrong

average day for a mountain biker!
💯
Or anybody else that's not incredibly out of shape.
Beechview, not Beechwood
Thank you !!!
It's not like the name of the street was written on some kind of sign or anything.
Get better bikes and this not that daunting. An S pattern as soon as you hit the bricks is the best way to hold speed and cut down the grade.
No doubt we love our surly's s pattern is the ticket !!
Looks like they made that road before they invented bulldozers.
Must be a very old road for sure
Correct
Yes Pittsburgh is a Very old City and many of it's streets started out as a path that People on Horse or foot used then turned in to a Street. and these cobble stones are as slick as ice when the leaves fall off the trees.
this is not special compared to a lot of roads in the mountain province Philippines.
⛰️🚵♀️
You can’t sit down and climb it. You have to stand like your husband.
💯
Steepest street in the U.S., not hill in the world! It was right on the sign behind you, but you still screwed it up, or did you?
Happends !! Just trying to have fun we don't take ourself to serious
You need to pull on the handlebars every time you pedal
Neither of you look like experienced cyclists lol
So you're not likely to make it
Dave made it 2nd try it was a fun challenge deffinatly not pulling on the handlebars to steep would of flipped over !!!
Bullshit
