Perhaps a decade ago I saw a news report about an atheist mother who moved to a small town and found the teacher was leading prayers in school, and felt she had to stop it. When they then interviewed some teens, one said people who don't want to pray in school must be devil-worshippers. So many people don't understand why that kind of order or forced-conformity is wrong. And the idea of a fearless, not-to-be-questioned leader who will champion their values ("own the libs") and put "those people" in their place, appeals to so many people both before and after January 6th.
I love this movie so much when I first watched it I was 10 and it was a comedy to me, tho I ended up ugly crying at the ending. now that I rewatch this movie as a 15 year old history student I realise how grim it all is fully knowing the context and background of everything that's happening. best father award definitely goes to him.
I officially feel old realizing this movie came out in the 90s. I sat on the stairs of the movie theater to watch this back when theater chairs were made of mohair and movies had projectionists. I cried during this movie because I understood the perspective of the child. Now as an adult I watch and cry because I understand the perspective of the parents.

There are those who are against teaching the Holocaust, like the school board in TN that banned _Maus_ last year, with no approved replacement. It makes me think of Holocaust deniers who say that to take away sympathy for the Jews and other victims, but really want another one.

The father was going through hell too, but at least he had the opportunity to see his child so he could at least cushion the blow and guide him as best he could. (But it must have been nearly impossible to try to make the best of that situation. It's amazing what the love of a good parent can do.) Either way, it's a special kind of hell.

I was appalled when first hearing of this movie. I could not believe a comedy could be made about the holocaust. Before viewing it, my friends said give it a chance. I could not believe it. The movie is brilliantly done. It is humorous while never losing sight pertaining to the horrors of the holocaust.

Watched this several years back. This movie is much less brutal and nerve wrecking compared to other holocaust movies. Robert Bennigini has put a layer on humanity on such a grotesque situation. I became his fan after watching this. Movie is beautiful.
