A calm sea that is soughing to me
It is there that we will forever remain together
The beloved blossom of the evening
Waikalua dons the mountains as a lei
A dark lei of the Koʻolau
With Pūʻahuʻula on the shoulders
To Puʻupahu who stands at the seashore
To the sea we go, my companion
My companion to caress on a cold night
There is no cold for we have found shelter
On the seashore where it is peaceful
Tell of the refrain so that it is heard
For Waikalua, my beloved land
It is there that we will forever remain together
The beloved blossom of the evening

ʻĀina is not just the landscape we enjoy and call home. The physical attributes - majestic cliffs, poignant hills, soft sea spray - host the knowledge ascribed to them by kūpuna. Through moʻolelo and mele, these stories influence the home we see, adding meaning to beauty already implicit. This ʻike reaches us today via moʻolelo and mele of yesterday. Thus, Nicholas Kealiʻi Lum felt it important to record today's ʻāina-scapes for tomorrow. In doing so, he not only honors his new home in Waikalua, but the kupa he joins to story this ʻāina hānau - "No Waikalua, kuʻu ʻāina ē."
