  • Imlay Canyon - Zion National Park
    Zion National Park is THE place to go for technical canyons. There are a ton of choices. All different difficulty levels. Zion National Park is the Mecca for canyoneers.
    There are the 'regular' canyons. Keyhole, Pine Creek, the Subway. And then there are the crown jewels. The ones only the most proficient canyoneers dare to enter. High walls, deep potholes, difficult approaches, countless rappels.....Canyons of legend where you are right on the edge of risk versus reward.
    OK. I'm getting a little dramatic here. But most canyoneers will tell you, there are canyons in Zion, and then there are THE canyons in Zion. Those canyons are Heaps and Imlay Canyon.
    I read the beta. I watched the videos. And I was pretty damned scared. Imlay Canyon seemed daunting. Was I in over my head? Was I just crazy? Maybe I should stick to Pine Creek and Keyhole.
    Well, I have a few buddies who canyoneer. If you know the sport, you know the type. Just the right balance between fearless and capable. The kind of guys who egg you on and brush things off. But you still know they know what they're doing.
    So yeah. They talked me into doing Imlay Canyon. I trained. I studied. I worried. A lot. But with all things canyoneering, you have to prepare. You have to be smart. But eventually, you have to go out there and do it. No, you don't want to get over your head, but you also have to go for it sometimes or you might as well just stick to the paved trails.
    The approach to Imlay is brutal. You basically climb up to the saddle on Angels Landing and keep going the opposite way. Next thing you know, you're on West Rim Trail, looking down at Angels Landing. Let that sink in. You're looking DOWN on Angels Landing. You turn off to a use trail and...the ups and downs just keep coming at you. It's brutal. I think I said that. But that's offset by the fact that you are in wild country that 99.9% of Zion's visitors will never see. And that makes it worth it.
    Then, you're there. Imlay Canyon. It immediatley narrows up and it's on. The Trash Compactor presents itself and, depending on the conditions, you get a good feeling for the challenge you're in for.
    Rappel after rappel and eventually you're in a deep, dark, curved and beautiful canyon. Imlay throws challenge after challenge, potholes were so common we immediately lost count.
    And finally, you're back in the sun. Feeling more confident (hopefully) after what you've overcome.
    And Imlay just throws more at you. More rappels. More potholes. More deep narrows.
    It seems like it'll never end. But then again, I was having so much fun I didn't care. I was honestly a little torn between relief and disappointment when I finally heard the Zion Narrows down below.
    Last rappel. And it's awesome. The feeling of accomplishment as you free hang down into the Zion Narrows - hopefully to a crowd - is impossible to describe.
    And then it's done. A 'short' walk out the Zion Narrows and you're back to the Temple of Sinawava. Then the River Walk. It was a shock to me to go from such a wild and remote place to the crowds.
    And now it's over. Imlay Canyon is in the books. I swore I'd never do it again at the time. Sore legs, sore arms....I was dead tired. Maybe that was enough adventure for me.
    Or maybe Heaps next year......Guess we'll see.

    I am from the 70's, went to red rock a few times but had no idea of the vastness of it. I have no idea if anybody reads my comments, I forgive the silly frivolity Your intrepid characters allow me a few glimpses of the wildness of sandstone. Again, thank you!

    Great videoJerry. Imlay is a fun one. With the rain you had the night before I'm surprised that it wasn't tippy top full.
    Imlay is a canyon that calls you back. So whats next, Heaps, Engelstead???

    I've watched a lot of your videos, and the majority of them take place in the Southwest and some in Colorado. What's the farthest you have ever gone on a trip outside of your home state of Arizona? Every been up north to Washington State or Alaska? Have any plans to? What about the East Coast?

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  Год назад

      We've gone to AZ, CO, CA, NM, UT, WA and even Kauai so far. Definitely the SW most often since it's where we live and we have full time jobs. Had West Coast Trail permits, but the pandemic got rid of those plans. Not sure where we'll go in the future. Have a pretty long list, but only so much PTO and weekend time.

    Whoa, this looks freaking awesome. You're basically convincing us we need to get into canyoneering. But LOL at 7:09 that would so be me 😂 Very impressed you got such good footage - its so hard when you're shooting in dark canyons like that! Skills, Jerry, skills. -E

    • @JerryArizona

      You two would DEFINITELY love canyoneering. And I threw out sooooo much grainy, dark footage. Pothole escapes are....difficult. Luckily the guys I go canyoneering with like to watch me struggle and figure it out myself. At least they don't leave me when I can't get out.

      I've had people complain about too much talking, not enough talking, they didn't like that I used music, they wanted music, but didn't like the music I used....My favorite was someone complaining that I was breathing heavy in a video where I was literally climbing a mountain while filming.
      Who knows?
      Glad YOU enjoyed it though. It was an amazing trip and I think the video does a good job conveying how much fun we had.

    Jerry, I expected far more on-camera misery from you in Imlay. Maybe in those prior vids you were just milking it for the camera. 😂

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  2 года назад

      I was too excited/nervous/in awe on the way in. Then too busy during the canyon. And finally too relieved when I hit the narrows. Never had time to complain like usual. Now if the exit was as tough as the approach, it would’ve been a while other story….

    You should run a no music version too.

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  2 года назад

      I get enough comments about no music that I've thought about it. A lot. Not to mention I know some huge channels that do just that; hiking, no music. But it never works for me. Like in this video we were constantly talking, so I was always cutting out dialogue that was nonsense taken out of context. But it's in the back of my mind and I'll probably play around with it sometime if it fits the footage.

      @@williamglaser6577 personally I feel like vids with no music are like watching paint dry. But on most of my normal hiking videos, I’m trying to use mellower, less intrusive music at least.

      @JerryArizona To each their own in regards to the music. However, we enjoy the videos AND the music so much that I’ve Shazammed several of the songs and added them to our music listening lists. I play the Salome Jug and Parker Canyon waterpark videos for my seven year old girl and four year old boy when we are driving the girl to school in the morning as happy wake up music videos to get our days going.
      And, I’ve gotten to where I’m now playing your videos for the music and to have something in the background to glance at when I’m cleaning, doing dishes, or working on our ecologically minded rental properties as a de-stressor and form of escapism. I like the mix of music, and yeah sometimes the grunge/rock is too much and the chill classical music is best at night time for us.
      We are in southeast Georgia, and we’ve never been out west. I keep telling the kids that when they are bigger in about five years, we’re going to travel and hike some of the places that y’all have explored and shared with the world. Watching your videos and The Outdoor Boys has been our inspiration for what we are going to do in the future.
      You’re incredibly talented at editing, filming, planning and dialogue. The whole ambience of each video has the perfect combination of excitement, trepidation, anxiety, reality, honesty, empathy, bonding, elation, joy, silliness, camaraderie, gratitude and common sense.
      I’m going to comment on some of your other videos as well, but please don’t bother to respond to the comments if you’re busy. Spend that time enjoying loved ones. Y’all stay safe.
