It's so sad that nobody who followed Juan T. Trippe as Pan Am CEO (well maybe Thomas Plaskett before Lockerbie nailed the coffin) had the competency to get Pan Am through the brave new world of airline deregulation and instead resorted to selling off the furniture to stay alive.

Lockerbie could have been prevented had they some basic security measures in place.
But overall, the reason Pan Am went out of business was because of mismanagement. After Trippe, nobody could lead the company. Seawall had a good resume for leadership, Ivy League educated, decorated military commander. But he went the wrong way when leading Pan Am. He sold off valuable assets instead of investing and building on them. He then bought out National Airlines, which backfired.
Hijackings, deregulations, oil crisis, economic downturn, those were lousy excuses - Trippe led the company through the Great Depression and World War II. He could have navigated the way through trouble.
