Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here. Спорт
Nice Copper John. I've tied n fished it w/good results. Tied n red as well. Keep the series going. God Bless n fish on Matt!
Great pattern, can't say enough about the (Hillbilly)Copper John. Thanks Matt for sharing.
Thanks Layton! I've been meaning to tie this one for a while, if only for the name. Since yeah, it's pretty much the same as all copper johns. :-)
Hi from Rolla Missouri 🎣🤠 Dave Hughes.
I'm looking for a new fly to tye to get down deep for summer panfish. After 10 in the morning they go deeper around the weed beds. On the cover for the Wing case I use an old video magnetic tape. Works well with a little bit of solarreze. Good health for you and your's 🎣🤠 Dave Hughes.
love the name of this one.....lol...thanks matt...have a great day.....and as always i will be watching....see ya joe
Yeah, I think this one is a pretty cool name too. Thanks Joe!
Cool twist on the copper john .nice tie matt.👍
Thanks Hugh! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
Good Morning Sir Matt, that's a nice looking copper... Super cool with the biots and the thin skin. Thank you Sir
Thanks Edward! And hey, I've finally got a big stack of flies to send to your buddy. I'll try to get a box put together by this weekend. :-)
@@SavageFlies thank you so much. I've been tying some that I learned from you and other videos, they are not perfect but they will fish. You don't know how much I appreciate this.
Thanks for posting this video.
FYI, your using the green "screen" background makes it so much easier to see the details of this fly.
This is definitely one of my favorite flies to tie
Great job Matt, thanks for the video
Thanks Dave! The good ol' Copper John. It's really mind-boggling that this fly wasn't created long, long ago. So simple and effective. :-)
This is going to become a favorite. What a great looking fly. Awesome job of tying Matt. Very enjoyable video. Thank you Sir.
Super tight tie and love the curved hook
Thanks Alex! Appreciate it my friend.
Another nice fly. Goose tails look great but don’t work too well for me most of the time, using rubber leg material now. Have a great day
Thanks man! For me, goose biots are easier than rubber legs. My rubber tails end up sticking all over the place. :-)
That's a great pattern.love it.thanks matt!!.
Appreciate it Mike!
Nymphs are great and this one especially works wonderfully. Thx Matt
You bet Clyde. I agree... and appreciate you watching!
Cool fly Matt!! I really like the way the curved shank hook makes this look!! Thanks for doing these videos!!!
Thanks Dan! I think you're the third person to mention the curved hook. I agree... I think it does make it look a bit cooler. :-)
Nice pattern, fun tie, thank you Matt.
Thanks Lee! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
love it thanks alot for sharing this series Matt!!!
Thanks James!! Really appreciate it my friend. :-)
Thanks for showing how to tie that one . I enjoyed the lesson as always .
You bet Chip; appreciate you watching my friend!
I’ve tied the copper John a few times, I’ll have to try this variant
Oh yeah, I've had lots of luck on all the CJ variants!
Like you say, it's a great pattern. I like tying BH nymphs on curved shanked hooks. This one could easily find a spot in my flybox. Cheers
That's funny Darren, I just mentioned the same thing on the previous comment. I too think a lot of nymphs simply look better on curved hooks. I have no idea why. Intuitively it just seems right. :-)
Lovely fly Matt thank you for sharing
You bet Tom; appreciate it my friend!
Thanks, Matt! Another great fly. My first effort to tie up a CJ (plain) was with a Mustad #12 bait hook, copper wire from an old electric motor, and some peacock herl. I caught some very picky rainbows in midday clear water summertime. I think this is one pattern that just works even without the bead head.
Jim- excellent story! And I think you're right. Just something about the pattern that has always worked. :-)
Looks good!!! Matt almost 2K!! 🥳🥳🥳
Thanks Otto. I'm getting there! I haven't looked at your page since the Godox light. Are you at 10k yet?? Probably so. :-)
@@SavageFlies lol. Nah. Slowly climbing... new video will be ready probably Friday or saturday
cool take on a copper john i tie the old style
Oh yeah, I think all copper johns are great patterns!
@@SavageFlies yup for sure
Great job Matt. Another great fly too have in fly box. You must have one or two in yours ? Thanks again Matt.
Oh, you bet Butch. I've always got a half dozen various Copper Johns in my box. Usually 14s, 16s and 18s, and three main colors: copper, green and red. They're still my go-to flies when I want to get something deep or punch it through fast water. Thanks for the note!
Ice tye Matt, do you put epoxy or UV on the wing case? Just want your take on this. Currently doing some remodeling and my fly tying bench is dismantled. When I get it done this is a pattern I will tie. Also using hen saddle for the legs. Is this an option?. Thanks again for your awesome channel.
Donald, absolutely! Hen saddle would make fine legs. If you didn't have partridge, my second choice would be a small pheasant feather but a small soft hackle hen feather would work just as well. Thanks for the note my friend!
I love this series! I bought this book because if this series and was pleased with the entomology section of the book as well as the patterns. I live near WNC so I see this as my home water. I was wondering if you had considered reviewing John Barrs book "Barr Flies "
Thanks
Thanks William! I really appreciate the kind words. I have not checked out John Barr's book yet but I'm adding it to my list now. :-) Okay, I just checked it out. It's $40 on Amazon so that's probably why I don't have it yet! I'll think about it though...
Thanks for sharing. Any suggestions on a substitute for the partridge feather for the legs?
Appreciate it Steve. If you've got a pheasant skin, my second choice would be to use one of the small feathers on that (the kind of gray/green down toward the butt). Other than that, just use any small hen, soft hackle. That'll work just fine!
That’s a great looking fly. How do you think this would work with a size 12 circle hook?
Thanks Mark! I think it would work great as long as you didn't close the gap up too much between the bead and the hook point.
Not real sure why they want the legs snipped off, but a great looking variant.
I had no idea Jim. In fact, as the picture in Don Kirk's book was the only one I've ever seen of this specific variant, I actually wondered if that was a mistake. Whether they're snipped or not, meh, makes no difference to me. I think the coolest aspect of the fly is using a curved hook. (I just think so many nymphs look better on curved hooks though.)
