This is Shaq at the point in his career when he had more in his repertoire than the charge and dunk... vs. Ewing on his last legs (literally) -- and still the "Beast from the East" acquitted himself quite admirably in this outing. Physically, Shaq could dominate Ewing at this point in their respective careers, but in terms of total game, Ewing still had it. Too bad the Knicks never built a real franchise around this aircraft carrier/legend of a player -- one of the all-time best centers the game ever had, and my personal favorite.
@bumblebity2902 -- Everyone chokes sometimes -- Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Reggie Miller. Everyone. But if you'd followed Ewing's career the way I did, you would have seen Ewing hitting one clutch shot after another, in the regular season and the playoffs, in Games 1 and 7, and all the games in between. You would have seen him taking over fourth quarters in game after game, shutting down the opposition's offense with his tremendous defense and blocking skills, and taking the scoring burden on his own shoulders at the other end of the court, hitting all kinds of shots over the double/triple-teams opponents routinely threw at him -- and making the perfect pass out of the double/triple-team when he didn't have a shot, resulting in assists that put the Knicks ahead. There's a reason coaches like Pat Riley, a legend, chose to put the ball in Ewing's hands when it mattered. More often than not, even after his knees were shot, the man was good in the clutch. Often brilliant.
@@bumblebity2902 -- Yes, Game 5 Ewing arguably outplayed Olajuwon, and in the rest of the series The Dream either outplayed Ewing or just plain dominated. But if we're being fair, Ewing was not in top form for that series, and had more knee surgery right after it concluded (in July of '94). Put them both in top form, and it's a virtual wash, with Ewing outplaying Olajuwon nearly as often as he was outplayed by him. But Olajuwon was much healthier over a much longer period of time, and I'll readily concede that his NBA career gives him the edge over Ewing. Both are amazingly accomplished centers, true legends, but Hakeem is in contention for THE greatest center of all-time -- with Kareem, Wilt, and Russell -- and Ewing is in that next tier, with Robinson and Shaq.
@@bumblebity2902 -- And Starks, streaky Starks, definitely had his moments in that series, but it wasn't Ewing who shot 2 for 18 in Game 7. That was John Boy.
@@tylerriley2587No question. The Lakers were honestly the most talented and deepest team in the league that season. But their lack of maturity, discipline, leadership in there best player (Shaq wasn’t that guy yet), and a proper head coach that could handle a star studded team like that, is what derailed them.
What a game! Both teams are great. Youth won. Shaquille played great. Lots of deceptive movements and beautiful passes. How respectfully he treats the great Patrick. How did Robert Horry careful ask if everything was okay with John Starks? Great game! Thanks for sharing. I love this game 🏀❤
I remember this game I was in 4th grade it was a Friday night and this was a doubleheader the first game was the Pistons and Magic, the Magic won 89-84 this was weeks before Penny went out with his injury. They don't commentate like that anymore! "Shaq puts it on the rim and lets the ball fall in, that's called Touch" "Ewing with the Soft Jumper"! They not only showed you the game, they taught it as well. These days they want every position to shoot like Reggie smh. This NBA lacks fundamentals and praises the insignificant dynamics
I don't know how the Lakers couldn't keep kobe, shaq, and eddie jones together. I don't know if people knew how good eddie was. I think all 3 made the all-star game one year
@@kerryrivers9869 I mean they did pretty well without them. Still, I think Eddie Jones would have taken some of the burden off Kobe if he would've been around when Shaq got traded in 2004
The final months of Patrick Ewing's pre-injury days.

Nick Van Exel alley-oop to Shaq at 18:23.

Put This Game On NBA TV Hardwood Classic On TV
Any of these teams would be amazing with today’s soft game and rules. Shaq and Ewing would dominate the post
The 1998 Lakers……. What could have been
The Utah Jazz was their roadblock in the early years before Phil Jackson's arrival. The Lakers had talent, but they lacked discipline and maturity.

Even with all these guys at the end of their careers, this is why I still can’t watch games today. I quit watching after the Spurs 2014 season.
