And the Best Movie
Definitely should have won best score and best picture over the undeserving Around the World in 80 Days.
Both director and music composer dedicated their life in this greatest film of all time!salute!
This kind of music makes me nostalgic and this film is from the Golden Age of Hollywood, but unfortunately they don't make such films anymore. This is definitely a classic!
Not often does it happen that a director gets the chance and the opportunity to revisit a prior project. In the case of the legendary Cecil B. DeMille and the “Ten Commandments” it did happen. The difference between original (1923) and revisit (1956) couldn’t be more noticeable, one being a silent movie in black and white (of course) and the other being a colorful feast for the eyes and ears. While both productions share monumental set designs on their own, only the 1956 version features an essential thing: a musical score.
While DeMille worked successfully before with one of Hollywood’s greatest composers of the time, Victor Young (“Unconquered” (1947), “Samson And Delilah” (1949)) and wanted him to score his new version of “Ten Commandments”, Young was already seriously ill at the time (he would eventually die way too soon in 1956) and recommended somebody rather unknown to the director: Elmer Bernstein. In the end the young talent, who worked before on just a handful of films (among them Otto Preminger’s “The Man With The Golden Arm” (1955)) would be scoring the upcoming cinematic epic masterfully. This work would mark one of Bernstein’s earliest projects and the biggest one he would ever do in his fruitful career.
While he himself re-recorded his magnificent score three times (once in mono and twice in stereo) the original music, which was recorded for the movie itself stayed (officially) unreleased until the movie’s 60th anniversary in 2016. Intrada Records presented an epic presentation of the score on no less than six CD’s, of which the first three would feature the entire original film score (which you are just listening to) plus alternates and demo recordings and the three re-recordings on the other ones, marking the definitive edition of this grand work. For those of you who noticed: Indeed, did we feature the score on the channel once before (about ten years ago already!), which featured the original recording as well, but that one was sourced from a bootleg CD with rather unsatisfying sound quality, but now, as it is Christmas, we shall enjoy the wonderful music once again, sourced from that new wonderful edition with a splendid sound quality (with just a few exceptions). Many on this channel probably already know this film anecdote but De Mille filmed the original 10 Commandments on a beach about 30 minutes north of Santa Barbara, I believe it’s called Guadalupe Beach, don’t quote me. But they just left the set in these unusual sand dunes on this beach, worth seeing for that alone, but the artifacts of this set have been dug up like ancient relics for years. Even a museum on site, appointments necessary if you want to see it). Even saw a museum exhibit in LA about this that had a great collection of these artifacts. Fascinating.
Thanks for the background story. Isn’t it amazing that The Ten Commandments is unimaginable without this classic score. The music is so well tailored for this spectacle of a movie.

Elmer Bernstein was a master of so many film genres, probably most fondly remembered for the
Westerns and "The Great Escape". I loved his Proms performance of the latter - so warmly
we;lcomed by the audience and clearly enjoyed by the maestro himself. Thank you for this

Wow! I have always loved this film with its scope and tremendous performances by the cast. Elmer Bernstein fashioned a magnificent and epic score. I can see why you had to reach out to 20 minutes for this presentation. Excellent as always. So let it be written! So let it be done!

believe me, those 20 minutes were a fight! The first rawcut featuring very worthy cues was about 38 minutes long (no wonder, regarding the three hours of existing music). Thank you very much and have a great time!

I don´t understand, why this score was not nominated for best original score. At least, a worthy winner was awarded with the Oscar: Around the World in 80 Days.

Awesome...Maynard Ferguson on trumpet. Maynard played on 46 Paramount movie soundtracks, most notably, The Ten Commandments.
The amount of pre-production research and planning DeMille had his staff do is amazing, and it shows in the quality of the film - the photography, sets, casting etc. 14:34 I've always felt that this scene (and the accompanying soundtrack) was DeMille's way of jolting the audience, lol. At this point, they've sat through about three hours and fifteen minutes (with intermission) watching the fight of "One Man against an Empire". Now the action really starts !!! Imagine being in a theatre watching the chariots racing from the city, the pillar of fire, the Red Sea etc. If you've read any comprehensive DeMille bio, you can't help while watching this film to think about DeMille (his career and how he shaped Hollywood).
Thanx for this upload. One of the great scores. When I saw this movie as a kid in 1959 it was the movie that got me into movie scores and I've never looked back. Merry Xmas and a great New Year to you Fred.
For me it was BEN-HUR, which even today remains my all time favourite from every angle, with graceful Haya Harareet as Esther and the haunting music of Miklos Rozsa, standing out.

As I recall, this was the first stereo recording for a film, but of course the release prints and theaters of the initial release couldn't play it in stereo. Additionally, Technicolor worked very hard on the 1972 re-release prints and one projectionist of the time stated online that it was the sharpest image he had ever seen projected onto a movie screen.

The upload at the movie's 65th anniversary is likely a coincidence I had not in mind. The 20 minutes were indeed hard to do. The raw cut was almost 40 minutes long. But in my opinion 15 or 20 minutes should be enough for a suite or to enjoy a reduced version of a film score. If you are doing half an hour versions or even longer ones, you could just listen to the entire soundtrack then, don't you think? :-)

An unofficial proposal, for future medleys: Could you make the James Bond saga suites and the sagas about the famous horror slasher killers, please? In 2022, James Bond films turn 60! If this were redone, I would keep the original score, add Yadah Psalm23 "The Lord Is my Shepherd song".
I think I would use Mel Gibson, Blair Underwood, Denzel Washington or Jim Cavezel for the part of Moses.

Unfortunately there exists no score for this specific arrangement. But there exists one for orchestra that can be rented or purchased. Various (live) recordings are available on RUclips. I am sorry though, but it is impossible for me, even to arrange certain music videos into scores as this consumes way too much time and effort. Hope you understand and wishing you just the best!
