- Competency-based education (CBE) and equitable grading go hand-in-hand, and one leads to the other! Grades represent a currency for students to communicate what they have achieved, but how can we ensure they represent actual student learning? A recent study of over 33,000 middle school and high school grades, “Can We Trust the Transcript? Recognizing Student Potential Through More Accurate Grading” shows the inaccuracy and inequity of common grading practices. We need to assess and report competencies tied to evidence of learning.
