New Yorker Steve Vai began his storied career as a guitarist for Frank Zappa, before tearing up the stage solo as a hard rock maven. His dazzling, emotive playing-style has brought him into contact with a who’s who of the rock canon, including Joe Satriani, Alice Cooper, Whitesnake, Motörhead, Public Image Ltd., and even Spinal Tap.
In this wide-ranging On The Record interview, Steve shares how he's been reviving tracks he recorded with Joe Satriani for the G3 tour, how Korn mastered his legendary Ibanez 7-string guitar, and why he's still in love with analog amps.
Dive into the whole interview and discover guitar tabs to your favorite Steve Vai songs on the Ultimate Guitar site.

KoRn inspired me to start playing guitar back in either 1998 or 1999. I remember the exact moment I decided to pursue the instrument and what I was doing, I was in the basement of my old house and I was listening to their song Got The Life. I love the guitar parts that Brian plays during the intro/chorus. Such creative/unique guitar playing, Such a legendary band!

I hear you bro and feel the same. KoRn was and still is a big inspiration to my playing on 7 string. From listening to them in high school to actually learning to play guitar and then playing their songs is just awesome! And naturally we play Ibanez UV's or their signatures ;) Got The Life has a great rhythm and lead riff going on. Another banger of a riff is Play Me off Take a Look in The Mirror.

I would see Vai at Berklee... He was 10 feet tall then.. we would crowd around the small window of a practice room and watch Morning Thunder rehearse with our mouths hanging open. Fun ! I have used Ola's suggestion on getting used to the 7-string ( play it and ignore the low string for a while.... :) Oh, and Steve is still 10 feet tall.

I met Steve Vai In the elevator at the Marriott hotel in Salt Lake City after a David Lee Roth concert (skyscraper tour). I was probably 14 and well on my way to 6'2"... However, I will never forget Steve's stature, he just seemed a thousand feet tall, we shook hands and it felt like his fingers wrapped around mine two or three times. I was very much in awe. He was a gentleman.

I remember when Vai went with Ibanez. The brand absolutely exploded. They had endorsers galore. They built the ultimate shred sticks. I dug the RG and Sabre, now known as the S. And the Edge was a far superior take on the Floyd. To this day I haven't owned an Ibanez but I will, probably an S model. Regarding the HSH pickup configuration, the Jem was the first guitar produced with that configuration. It was common for New York session cats at the time like Hiram Bullock, but otherwise not very popular. The Jem popularized it by demonstrating all the tonal possibilities, and it came with a great pickup set. Two DiMarzio PAF Pros and an HS-2 middle.

He CAN'T feel 3 ms, it is the time from the cab to his ears.
BUT when you add 2-7 ms for what the modellers will have to do, then you may have more than 11-12 etc. And that you can feel easily.
    It is the added latency.
Also, about the modelling crap (yeah yeah I am trolling) in the battlefield...It's obviously not an amp in a room and it never will be and that is why they work so well in the recording environment.
About the battlefield he is also right. Those pesky modelling cab sims, kemper etc. They have "room sound" built in. Like reverb. Like a million eq points sort of. Which is great for character but live, you already have another room and the whole mix going on differently. So you may get phase cancellation and try to find out why your guitar dissapears even with the other mix controlled with the same logic (DI drum sound for example). Room in a room, reverb. Yak.
