Mortal Shell - Nintendo Switch - DF Tech Review - An Ambitious Port Blighted By Poor Performance

- An indie-based Souls-like game running on Unreal Engine 4, we rather liked Mortal Shell on PC, PlayStation and Xbox consoles - and now there's a Switch version to consider. Tom stacks up the port to the Nintendo hybrid against the PS4 version and while the visuals hold up, performance simply isn't good enough.

How they thought regularly dropping to 15-20fps was acceptable I don't know.
Its fine for Soulsborne players. Have you seen the framerate of Bloodborne?
@@trblemayker5157 Bloodborne has frame pacing issues not frame rate issue. The game is lock at 30fps. So your point is?
@@trblemayker5157 Bloodborne's framerate is totally fine, the game has just weird frame pacing, just like Elden Ring on PS5,the game runs at 50-60fps but the weird frame pacing make's it look worse
@@jesser4221 The 30fps lock is an issue in itself. Its a souls game, i cant think of a single other non shooter/driving game where motion and timing is any more important. No excuses to be made for one of their most popular games.
Whether its frame pacing or the actual frame rate, its genuinely difficult to go from souls on my pc (or demons souls/elden ring on ps5) to bloodborne and play at the same level instantly.
@@jesser4221 u guys r LYYIINNGGGG bloodborne has regular drops to 20 fps
Ported by Run Games and released 3 weeks ago. It took a month and a half for the original developers Cold Symmetry to update the PS5 enhanced edition to fix the fps. There is no mention on their socials of a patch or update and anyone that asks is met with silence. I reckon Run Games is one of those studios that ports games and moves on, not contracted to follow up with updates or patches (like the situation with Mass Effect Legendary Edition). Wouldn't surprise me if there was one small update with "Various performance fixes" that doesn't really do anything, and that's it. I'd love to be proven wrong though, this is merely conjecture.
Like how the GTA trilogy definition edition was handled
I believe they released a patch on like day 2 or 3 that stabilised the framerate a little. Evidently not much but it at least made it playable
Like Grip Digital - they spent about a year gaslighting their customers on reddit and discord over their pillars of eternity port before releasing a final patch that completely nuked the game with issues.
@@benhillman8384 Looking into it, they all have the same sort of websites too. "We provide support to studios..." and it seems when they port games that are poorly performing on release they just move on to the next project and provide a small patch. It seems the majority of the team are moved on and a couple of people are left to do a contractually obliged update. That is all they are paid for.
GTA Definitive addition got so much flack for how shit it was, that Rockstar took it back from Grove Street to fix it. The same happened with the PC port of Horizon Zero Dawn who hired Virtuous to port the game and it was a mess so Guerilla took over. With the Mass Effect port Bioware did the same thing of hiring an external company to port the games (all they did was put textures through AI filters and change a few things in the coalesced.ini), and once that company was done they moved onto the next game. That is why you didn't see any updates for the framerate mess that game is.
Bioware hired them to port the game, provide a day one patch and that is it! Sorry for the wall of text, but that is literally what is happening with these ports and it's sad :(
@@modermonkula I'm rather late to the discussion here. As a young teen who grew up with the original 3d triology, Would you say it's worth picking up now? Seriously i wasn't sure if the fixes where going to help with it being derived from a mobile port and moved over to UE4. I had tried it at launch but due to the Stutter struggles and really weird enviroment placing (floating grass, bugged water etc) I had to refund that PC version. I don't mind the art style too bad. Just darn i'd like it to feel somewhat original or enhanced from it. I'd love to hear from someone who's played it recently who can compare it to launch, Those GTA Channels talking about this are kinda' bias in their reporting i feel.
Literallly within 15 secs of the vid you know this game is unplayable
Visually it looks OK for that shitty hardware, but the poor performance is just awful, save your money people !
It’s crazy that games get released having frame drops down into the teens.
whats crazy about it? the hardware limitations or the limitations of the coders?
Srsly.. it happens over an over again and it looks "crazy" ? Its something usual for 2023.
I mean this is by an indie developer, so they don't have the most resources or expertise. They did the best they could on the Switch.
Witcher 3 was equally bad
@IzzyMann The fact anyone even tried to do this on a switch and then charge money for it... It's literally a waste of time, money resources. It's nearly theft. The Switch is done. All these AAA games are simply cash grabs.
People on NintendoLife is actually defending this shitty port, calling it great, and don't notice the horrible framerate. 😂
Taking people back to the N64 days with that framerate
I used to play the Conkers Bad Fur Day multiplayer with my mates. It used to go down to about 10fps when a lot was happening onscreen.
Still great fun though, not to mention laugh out loud funny.
Or PS3/XB360
@@DrMcMoist no game has ever performed so poorly while being so fun as the original starfox on SNES. 7fps while I’m telling my friends it is one of the best games I’ve ever played.
they should baöance the game again, playing this in ultra slow mo is much easyer 😅😇
The history of 3D games' framerate targets is definitely strange. Early on horribly inconsistent fps might have been seen as acceptable, but you also had many games targeting 60 fps on older systems.
Then around 360/PS3 era it seems like AAA became synonymous with pushing the hardware until it barely kept 20 fps in some scenarios, although technically the games were "30 fps" at max.
Around last gen is when the importance of *consistent* framerates was really acknowledged, but 30 fps became so standard that a lot of fast paced games, which may have targeted 60 fps two gens earlier, settled with 30.
Last mid-gen was bizarre and misdirected because AAA corporations pushed the "4K" buzz really hard, when all but the slowest games would have benefitted far more from 60 fps.
This generation is a relief, because it's finally being normalized to give console players options, and it seems like having a 60 fps preset is becoming a minimum standard. With fast paced games like shooters also venturing into 120 fps presets.
For all the problems with AAA games themselves nowadays, performance control is in the best place it's ever been for consoles.
I payed 3€ for this on switch and i want my money back
Bruh its a slideshow
Man, poor Tom Morgan back at the Mortal Shell mines 😭
People moaned that 8/20 for visuals and performance was harsh lol
Switch up knows best! Thanks for all your hard work Mark & Glen! 💪🏼
I really hope for decent backwards-comp on the next Switch akin to current-gen consoles.
There are so many games now that could profit massively, especially the ones with an unlocked framerate and/or dynamic resolution.
Highly unlikely, considering Nvidia hardware is going to be involved. And those guys don't really care about that.
DLSS 2.0 would work well on next fen Nintendo hardware
@@modermonkula now look at the power consumption of DLSS and think again about it. DF have their own analysis regarding that on this channel.
Nintendo? Backwards Compatibility? How would they sell you all their old games again? I've not seen anything to suggest their anti-consumerism has changed. I mean, I'll get a 'cease and desist' for just typing 'Nintendo'.
@@steveleadbeater8662 are you dumb or something? Most of Nintendo consoles are backwards compatible with their previous iteration, you could play Game Boy and Game Boy Color on GBA, you could play Gamecube on Wii, you could play GBA on DS, you could play DS on 3DS, you could play Wii on Wii U etc
Poor switch performance in 2023? Sounds about right.
PS4: Mortal Shell

Mortal Shell is actually an Axiom for Tom's ritualistic suffering that revolves entirely in and around the game itself.
Damn Nintendo is really flexing their exclusivity. 15fps games.
For games like this I have my Steam Deck, why even bother porting it now? Hardware is shit, I only use my Switch for Nintendo games now. Honestly screw Nintendo for not listening to their customers and still supporting this weak ass Hardware.

15-40fps, no screen tearing, 720p-ish resolution. This is Watch Dogs on Wii U.
Wait, Watch Dogs available on Wii U? Then it should be fine running on Switch but Ubisoft don't release it?
Putting out a slideshow game, they shouldn't have even bothered.
Good to see N is plaing on strecht the Switch another decade xD
i wonder how long before some of these developers just stop bothering with the Switch due to the terrible performance
The existence of the steam deck makes these ports so much worse
Keeping good graphics at the expense of the framerate is always the worst thing, a developer can do. They should screw down the graphics further!
Did you not watch the video? The game is noticeably pared back from the *base PS4* version. There’s only so much they can do without completely destroying the visual identity of the game. Sounds like they were running up against the inherent CPU/memory bandwidth limitations of the Switch.
Flashbacks to blighttown on 7th gen consoles xD
What an unnecessary port.
Steam deck makes all non-nintendo games redundant on Switch anyway. You can easily play this game at 30fps Medium settings on Steam Deck and get over 2 hours of battery life.
I would rather play it on switch. It’s just a more slick console.
I've encountered a game breaking bug in the virtuous cycle mode: after paying for the dungeon with the fire boss and entering it, the game hard crashes. Did you also encounter this?
Almost every switch port is riddled with issues… almost as if we need better hardware 😳
Yes it's a very strange conundrum. 🤔
Mmm... If only Nintendo would actually release a more powerful switch instead of just an OLED screen.
I love the sarcasm displayed on here, top marks guys!
@Joseph Nintendo fanboys will eat anything Nintendo releases. An overpriced underpowered POS? I'll take your entire stock. Overpriced ports of wii games? How generous. They get what they deserve. The Deck is just better in every way, but their OLED screen somehow fixes all the performance issues.
@@ishaansaral502 I mentioned the same on a different comment. People are paying a large amount of money for the experience, why should it be subpar?
Tom actually went farther into the playthrough than most reviewers showing just up to 1st boss. I like that I mean if ur gonna review the details of the visuals and gameplay of the game u got to stress the later parts.
Daily reminder than Nintendo could have easily used the significantly more powerful Tegra X1+ or even the Tegra X2 SoC, but instead opted for the older/cheaper Gen 1. Also, Nintendo was very close to releasing the Switch with a miserable 2 GB of onboard RAM. Leaving only 1 GB available to developers. It wasn't until developers complained about this, that Nintendoa greed to increase to 4GB. Nintendo is right there with EA and Activision as the cheapest and most greedy companies in the industry.
Well devs have to choice between Tegra X2 with 2GBs of RAM or Tegra X1 with 4GBs of RAM.
Devs got what they wanted, why didn´t complained to Nintendo with the CPU they went?.
Consoles doesn´t need much RAM as PCs.
As PC has to run a gargantuan program (Windows, MacOS, Linux, etc..) and then a game on top of it; not to mention background applications... the more installed, the more background data. As opposed to a dedicated gaming machine, RAM takes a back-bench to all processors, especially the CPU.
@@DDT-lr3zz OS doesn't need that much
@@nadirjofas3140 Nope, look out for example Battlefield 3.

given what utter unplayable dogcr@p the game is, they should just never had made a port for the pathetic gutless wonder that is the switch in 2023... or since launch to be honest. The only visually nice 3d games that have any business on it are ones developed from the ground up for the wheezy old tegra maxwell.
The game testers were like: 15 fps, marvelous! More than we have ever expected 😍 gives that nice slow-motion laggy feel 🤩
lol what testers?
Ahh, it takes me back to the halcyon days, when pixels were nearly as big as the pockets on my Jnco Jeans
DF should do switch vs steam deck comparisons instead of ps4.
I dont even know why they even bother with the switch and these huge games anymore. The console is so dated at this point.
Sometimes I have to wonder if it's even worth the developers making a port to the Switch when the cut backs are so big and the performance is so low.
I can't imagine many gamers wanting to play that game in that state and it would be interesting to see how well the game performs on the Steam Deck being as it's a portable device.
Yeah, the Switch is still a great console and with plenty of life left in it. But not for as heavy games as this one. Just make a clean break and accept from now one Switch will no longer be able to run the latest and greatest games. It doesn't mean it can't run hundreds of other awesome games, just look at most Nintendo first-party games.
Yes, the switch has a massive userbase and there's people that only have it as a gaming device so it's probably pretty lucrative even if the game looks like crap in terms of visuals
The switch has millions of users as a user base and the overwhelming majority of them don't even know Digital Foundry. This was a license to print money as Pokémon and other franchises that released substandard games on switch rarely feel the pinch of consumer dissent. They get what they deserve for buying into Nintendo's scam walled garden.
If i was an 8 year old kid i probably wouldn't care or notice about the low quality textures and frame rate.
As a kid i play alot of command & conquer on N64 and that ran at 15 fps or less, didn't phase me i just thought that's how the game was.
@@SweBeach2023 Even Nintendo first party games are starting to struggle on the Switch, so no, it doesn’t have plenty of life left in it. We need the Switch 2 this year.

At some point Nintendo's interest in building low grade hardware has to stop in some way. These constant performance struggles in various games are a genuine scare for me, away from the Switch.
Well a very powerful console is expensive
If someone makes an underpowered console, its because of the low price and to sell for profits
@@Charles-hy6gp I agree, I don't like Nintendo's min-maxing with the Switch though. The tablet's specs were luke warm even in 2017.
From a business perspective, why would they? They made a healthy profit on each Switch sold, while still being able to sell at a lower price than the competition, they're still making money hand-over-fist on first-party software and much of their audience seem oblivious to the technical issues as they only play a handful of first-party games. Nintendo is nothing if not shrewd business-wise - don't get me wrong, not condoning them using the weakest hardware they can (Capcom had to beg them to up the RAM to 4GB), just saying that knowing them they'll only upgrade to newer hardware when it's strictly necessary (eg. when sales of original Switch drop off a cliff)
A lot of the “impressive” inclusions should not have been included. How they expected a game that only runs 900p on ps4 at 30fps to work is beyond me.
Getting flashbacks from the N64 era, with all the terrible framerates.
Just because you CAN port a game to the Switch, if it won't be able to run smoothly, then what's the point?
Why the hell do they keep porting games that genuinely barely run on switch? Who the hell pays for that? 30fps already looks like dogshit, why release anything that averages in the teens??
You must be Gen Z. Here 🍼
@SicSemperBeats
Thinking of buying Mortal Shell mainly because it reminds me of Dark Souls on the 360..
Blighttown 12 frames, honey
damn this game is so bad, but even so they thought someone would play this crap at 20 fps
They should revise artwork, textures, polycount and effects to cater the weaker hardware, not just try and brute force the game to run on the Switch. More people should learn from Playtonic for example, and how they ported Yooka Laylee to the Switch by revising art assets and modifying the game to run on it.
At least this port tells us that Mortal Shell is possible, now revise the art style, effects and patch it. Easier said than done, I know.

Thats not how compute power is measured, son. The Switch has twice the gflops, 8× more RAM and a decade newer CPU and GPU that are a lot easier to use than the abysmal cell processor found in the PS3 that bottlenecked the system. So yes, the Switch is several times more powerful.
