Lords of the fallen's art direction kinda sucks,it's overdesigned to the point where everything blends together,it's a mess of spikes, battlescars, armor plates and chains,it looks ridiculous.
I thought Lords of the Fallen was ridiculously easy. All the bosses were pretty pathetic, I died early on in the game just getting used to the controls. After I got it down, I made it through nearly the entire game without dying, often beating bosses without getting hit on the first try.
Cold Symmetry seems like a team with a clear vision for what they wanted to achieve, and a good understanding of the limits of their resources. There is some jank in the gameplay, but the combat feels solid and the animation is great. Enemy variety is a bit limited, and some enemy placement feels haphazard, but they get good mileage out of their level design and encounters regardless, and each enemy itself is good. Some cutscenes feel a little unfinished, and in a couple of places I think they wanted to have cutscenes they didn't have time to make. And then of course those who take issue with the fact that EPIC is nearly half owned by the Chinese conglomerate Tencent. Its not that far fetched a scenario to imagine that in a few years when people have several hundred games in their EPIC library, that they must agree to new T&Cs which puts their data into questionable hands - you either agree, or lose access (Look whats happening with the Oculus store.) You may think thats hyperbole, but thats actually the watered down version, considering there is a real possibility of them harvesting your data now, ya know, like social media apps are already doing. Dont even take my word for it, just look up yourself how Instagram was caught stealing users biometrics just the other week - thats just 1 example!
Love that you mention Cowboy. You and Fightin Cowboy are my two favorite video game type people. I actually thought you two were the same person at one point. You remind me of one another in all the best ways
I don't understand how the asset quality can be so high considering it is such a small team. Mortal Shell runs circles around DS3 and also eclipses Sekiro from a strictly graphical standpoint.
@@umarjamshed6420 I disagree. The places you mentioned are artistically interesting, but not technically. The textures, material shaders (Lighting in general), geometry, and density of assets are breathtaking in Mortal Shell. It also helps that aliasing is kept to a minimum (Whereas DS3 is highly aliased, and therefore always noisy). I would understand if you like the art style of DS3 more (I personally think it inferior to DS1), or if you think its animations superior to MS (Which I would agree with). But from a raw technical prowess: No, a night and day difference.

Keep up the great work, you are very much appreciated!
The parry timing feels off for me as well. There are also a lot of effects in view of the enemy sometimes as well, that makes it even harder to pull off. The generous hardening time makes parrying mostly useless, sadly. What has irritated me often as well was the weird level of sound from enemies, that sounded a lot nearer than they are when they are behind you. This, in combination with weird camera behaviour when enemies are close makes me think that I am the camera, not the character. Using an item to reveal its effect also just made me Google their effects for items I have only one (or very few) of.
Mortal Shell looks like one of the few soulslikes that seem to get the genre right. Too many developers are hung up on the (arguably false) idea that "Souls is hard" and focus solely on extreme difficulty. In reality the majority of the appeal comes from the exploration and world building, and of course the challenges the games present. Though in spite of their reputation they're not hard just for the sake of being hard (or even actually _hard_ at all) : they're challenging but only just enough to feel immense sense of accomplishment when you overcome the obstacles presented to you.
Maybe it's just me and I can't necessarily explain it except maybe the RPG elements being a bit stronger in this, or me loving high fantasy so this rubs me a bit more in the right direction, but this seems to fit what keeps me going in games like this. Dark Souls pissed me off in ways that made me stop caring about getting past a difficult section. This just seems to get the juices flowing a bit stronger than DS ever did for me.
Thanks for the review. The streams that I saw of this game last month made it look terrible, but the content of this review and the gameplay footage gives me more hope for it.
@@Walamonga1313 what?? Definitely not "easy as hell" dark souls is hard. Hard doesn't mean impossible. When people hear hard for some reason they feel like it has to be impossible for it to truly be called hard. No, its hard but very do-able. Only thing that makes it easy is if you summon ai or even another player every freaking area but if you play it as intended it is hard, and very worth it. As someone who has beat every from software game and consider myself pretty good at them, they are hard especially at first but anyone can get through them if they just learn the mechanics. Don't downplay everyone and act like you're better than most people.
It actually makes the game more fun unlike Dark Souls where you can mindlessly spam roll to avoid enemy attacks. It's less forgiving but once you time the proper time to dodge and roll, it actually makes the game easier and makes parrying obsolete.
the fact that there's no gear, loot system and no attribute-based character building is just a killer for me, everthing else looks fantastic, but those are some elements that just need to be in these games.
The game is already listed on GOG. I'll grab it Day 1 once it comes out there post-EGS exclusivity. Currently getting my Soulslike fix from Hellpoint, I was wondering what Karak thought of that one.
For the part about the sound of the parry being "ready" is actually the notification of a unparrryable attack so the tarnished seal alerts when you cannot parry
it feels like animations only have one speed and i dont really like that, but i do like how every attack seems to start in the legs or elbow, maybe the shoulder, u can see them start to form and move towards you, in dark souls its harder to read an enemy
Be aware that there's a bug at the moment that makes you loose all your progress. This happened to me today and I was lucky that I hadn't played the game that long.
"Imagine if games could shower and...well, one never did. That'd be Mortal Shell." LOL
Awesome that you shouted out FightinCowboy. He's great. I feel like he's sort of become that fan authority on Dark Souls!
"It's the Dark Souls of Encoding" 🤣
For those interested, the soundtrack by Atrium Carceri is on bandcamp.
I don't understand how the asset quality can be so high considering it is such a small team.
Mortal Shell runs circles around DS3 and also eclipses Sekiro from a strictly graphical standpoint.
Dark souls 3 is definitely a better looking game of all of these. Just look at ringed city, high wall, dreg heaps and irithyl of boreal valley.
The lighting most likely makes it appear better than it actually is. Plus technological improvements have happened.
souls 3 looks better in alot of its areas and was released 4 years ago, this game looks impressive graphically tho
That black onyx location certainly looks very impressive.
@@umarjamshed6420
I disagree.
Got this on Steam winter sale for $2.99 and can't wait to play it. Great review as always man! Gotta say the only thing that bugs me about your channel is that you aren't able to review EVERY SINGLE GAME OUT THERE! Haha when I find a game I'm interested in checking out only to discover there is no ACG review on it, I'm not only crushed, but I'm also about 10x less likely to buy said game because my one and only trusty reviewer hasn't given it his stamp of approval. These publishers oughta be paying you royalties mate lol cause they ain't selling games to people like me if there's no ACG review involved!
...Speaking of, you'll always be my #1 go-to, but for situations such as this are there any reviewers you recommend I can fall back on??
Thanks again for all the work you've put in for us brotha! You've led me toward some very enjoyable adventures and helped me avoid wasting money on the unenjoyable ones! Simply put, you're my financial advisor when it comes to gaming! And hell, sometimes I'll even check out your reviews on games I'm not really interested in just out of boredom, knowing that you'll provide some fun, informative and light-hearted entertainment.
Love that you gave Fighting Cowboy a shout-out!
This may be the Dark Souls of Souls-Like games!
Can't wait for tomorrow man!
Two of my favourite youtubers working together is awesome.
This review was all over the place. I have a feeling it's due to the game. Oop, forgot to say: Thank you very much for the in-depth review!
The streams that I saw of this game last month made it look terrible, but the content of this review and the gameplay footage gives me more hope for it.
is there anyone who by now feels like they've played dark souls without having played it even once?
Trust me, you haven't. And it may even feel easy as hell if you do, since so many people overblow their difficulty
I had $6.25 in credit so i just straight up bought it on my xbox one x and loaded it on my SSD. Its amazing! This and HellPoint
01:36 “ITS THE DARK SOULS OF ENCODING” ahahaha ez sub
I'd just like to say I appreciate you uploading in more than 1080p. Rock on dude.
is this the first strand souls game?
LOL
I was wondering what else this reminded me of!
Looks gorgeous. Was really excited up until the epic exclusivity deal... guess I have to wait a year.
It seems like a good-looking Demon Souls.
Wish they didn't have that stamina system as implemented.
Hmmm so you want easy Mode.
Just play as Tiel, problem solved
It actually makes the game more fun unlike Dark Souls where you can mindlessly spam roll to avoid enemy attacks. It's less forgiving but once you time the proper time to dodge and roll, it actually makes the game easier and makes parrying obsolete.
@@mingthemerciless834 yeah sure hahaha spam roll on Dark Souls 1 and tell me how much Alive you are after that.
Love your videos and shout out to cowboy. He’s got me though DS3 BB and Working on sekiro. You guys rock!!!!
Get my gameplay fix from u and cowboy..hell of a duo.
Waited for Karaks Verdict. Downloading it now. Thx for the Review.
This is the Dark Souls of reviews
the fact that there's no gear, loot system and no attribute-based character building is just a killer for me, everthing else looks fantastic, but those are some elements that just need to be in these games.
oh man i forgot this was coming out, ah its a epic exclusive thats why i forgot it was coming
I feel you. Ill get it in a year when it hits Steam
I thought it's coming to ps4 and Xbox too?
Cas The Demon yes it is coming to the PS4 tomorrow
On point my man 😂
this and Tony Hawk will challenge my commitment to wait for it to come to Steam, other games were easy to wait these two will be the hardest so far
The art design in this game is super cool. It also feels like a more approachable version of the dark souls formula
Epic exclusive? You mean TPB exclusive?
I haven't watched your reviews in a while....but I"m hooked again since I love this format.
The game is already listed on GOG. I'll grab it Day 1 once it comes out there post-EGS exclusivity.
Currently getting my Soulslike fix from Hellpoint, I was wondering what Karak thought of that one.
Thanks for this info, I love GOG
"Imagine if games could shower and well, one never did. That would be Mortal Shell." Best quote in a long, long time!
Been waiting for your review on this game !! Big shout from Great Britain
This is the Schindler's List of Dark Souls
For the part about the sound of the parry being "ready" is actually the notification of a unparrryable attack so the tarnished seal alerts when you cannot parry
it feels like animations only have one speed and i dont really like that, but i do like how every attack seems to start in the legs or elbow, maybe the shoulder, u can see them start to form and move towards you, in dark souls its harder to read an enemy
Love the bro shootouts between you and cowboy lol
Karak says staggered like “stayh-ggered”. Are you from Minnesota?
Wasn’t sure what to expect here. I’m pleasantly surprised! Thanks for the review man.
I've watched 4 reviews for this now and I still don't know if it has new game +
yes it does you can also stay when you beat final boss and choose to not go over to NG+
Be aware that there's a bug at the moment that makes you loose all your progress. This happened to me today and I was lucky that I hadn't played the game that long. It seems to appear on all platforms. So, if you've played the game for maybe 8 hours or more I recommend to stop playing until this get's fixed.
" 'Dark Souls is almost too good'
Some complete Jackass "
He is right tho can't argue with that
What's funny is if I'm comparing this to Dark souls I've run into less glitches in Mortal Shell lol
About that Fightincowboy cross-promotion ... HUGE fan - keep em coming!
