- The market is packed with hunting handguns, but the cream rises to the top. Smith & Wesson does just that with their Model 629 Magnum Hunter. Guns.com does an in-depth review of this Performance Center wheelgun and optic combo.
This gun’s given name is a long one - Performance Center Model 629 .44 Magnum Hunter. That’s a long moniker for a wheelgun that delivers quality, looks, and performance. This six-round, N-frame revolver is single/double action and chambered only for .44 Remington Magnum/.44 Special. It is built of stainless steel with a two-tone finish that gives it unique looks and a 7.5-inch barrel. Synthetic rubberized grips offer ample purchase and negate recoil.
Performance Center firearms are much more than production guns. They are hand-cut, hand-fitted, and custom-tuned firearms for the best in, as S&W says online, “old-world craftsmanship with modern technology.” There’s a dovetailed red ramp front sight and adjustable rear, as well as an integral Picatinny rail. A custom muzzle brake tames recoil and muzzle jump.
Even though I'm not always keen about the firearms you review, Kristin, I absolutely love to watch the reviews you post here on the Gunscom channel. You have a personality as big as all outdoors!
Glad you enjoy them Noah,. Plenty more videos on the way. We like to review a variety of firearms to keep everyone happy.
I have this handgun, I really love this gun. This gun really tames the recoil of the 44 Magnum.
Nice. Sweet gun for sure. Thanks for the comment Mike.
A good pair of grips and a proper stance does a lot for recoil.
Dream revolver for many people who love the 44. You can also shoot 44 special out of it to if you need less power or recoil sensitive.
Wow, Hondo Texas, I worked there for almost 30 years the Air Force flight screening program. Small world I’ve been reloading and into gun stuff for half a century. As a youngster, you are very knowledgeable and you don’t fill your videos with oatmeal, you get right to the point. I’m sure all your readers appreciate that as do I. If you come up with something crazy weird do you want to test it on the hogs, Give me a holler, I have some highly experimental calibers in the works, mostly based upon the Thompson center contender.
I bought one last year , love the way it shoots , feels and looks . I will be hunting whitetail for the first time in two days with it , can't wait .
Lol I hunt on public land. It's funny seeing everyone just watch you walk with your gear and not seeing a rifle. Just a backpack and tree stand you're good to go. That magnum hunter is strapped to my leg so the portability is amazing. This thing is good for 100 yards. That's all you really need. Most of my shots are at 60 yards. It's great not having to carry a rifle.

Wow I want that gun 👍🏻. It is great you are living in US. The guns price are very cheap as compare to Thailand. In Thailand S&W J frame price is 2500 USD just for your information. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Dang, that's expensive. Prices have gone up here in the US, but not that much!!
Hello Kristin. I hope you show us your gun collection sometime.
Good idea. Perhaps Kristin will be interested in that.
@@Gunscom Thank you for replying. I would like that for sure. Have a great rest of the week.
I am a die hard SnW fan. For what it's worth, I have a SnW 629 and I love it. It's not all tricked out like the one in the video, it's just box standard. That said, I can reliably pit the ace at about 60 yards with it. The recoil isn't too terrible but then again, I've shot the 500 magnum and that's my baseline for hard recoil. All in all, I highly recommend the 629.
Side note:
The 686 is great if you want something with a little less recoil (it's 357 mag) and if you want to take the 629 with you for carry, I recommend the SnW 69 combat 5 shot 44 mag. It's almost just as accurate as the longer barrel 629 and the recoil isn't unreasonable for a 44 snubby.
S&W revolvers are some of the best around. Thanks for the comment AH.
I have a 6.5" 629 classic and I've shot around 500rds through it. Most were light handloads (9grs of unique). But I've shot around 100 full power hunting loads (240gr xtp 24grs w296). The full power load recoil is very noticeable but it doesn't bother me and I've shot them 1 handed without issue. My question is how much worse is the recoil on a 500 S&W? I've been considering either a 460xvr or a 500 for deer hunting but trying to get a grasp on what the recoils like....
More revolver reviews, please.
Bad ass gun by the way.
Nice. A revolver-lover. Wheelguns don't get enough love, but we love them! Thanks for the comment Pete.
Love the revolvers as well. Would love to see a 480 ruger review. Wondering how much recoil it has. I heard the 480 ruger is a big, slow cartridge...
Awesome pistol for an awesome lady! Stay safe and God bless 🇺🇸☠️🇺🇸!!
Thank you for your comment J C.
I love the kiss for the gun. I thought I was the only one that did that.
I like this video. She did some nice shooting with this S&W Hunter. I think I want one for Anti-Bear Defense.
I have the Stealth Hunter version of this gun, the performance center trigger is fantastic!
Good looking gun! As a long time handgun hunter I would like to point out that cocking with your grip hand breaks your grip and will slow a follow up shot if needed.
Having all the brands of 44 mag. I still choose the 629 for the frame. Just the perfect size and will handle a 44 mag load.
Sweet! Still loving the Desert Tech MDRX SE I won from you guys
I just bought one. Can't wait to pick it up !
That made impression. Take your like.
Just picked this up for 1500 bucks cant wait to shoot.
Wish smith and wesson would make more 45acp/45lc revolvers
Move that group to center on the bullseye and youre already in spec to hunt out to 100 yards!!!
I have this gun it is very accurate awesome trigger!
Awesome revolver
I don't have this one, but I do have a 6.5 inch Smith and Wesson 629 classic deluxe
I hope to take an East Texas boar and a whitetail with it later this year!!! I also have a Smith and Wesson 686+ 4 inch that I'd like to take a hog with. I have DoubleTap 158gr colt defense 357 mag, and DoubleTap 180gr hard cast. I figure either will work!!! I also have for my 629 some Underwood xtp 240gr!!! I figure any of these should be sufficient. I do have like 4 boxes of DoubleTap 44 mag 320gr flat nose hard cast, but I don't want to shoot it in my 629 and beat it up. That stuff is brutal!!! I need either a raging bull or super Redhawk for that stuff unless I use a rifle. I'd go with a Smith 629 hunter with the factory muzzle brake, and it'd be fine in that but frankly I can't afford it this year!!! I paid 900 for my 629 classic deluxe, but I can't currently afford the 1500 dollars or more!!! Lol someday, and I think they are totally worth it!!! I just can't achieve it yet!!! It's my goal lol
Boy thats a awesome package! 👍🏻
It sure is! Thanks for the comment 32PS.
Hope you do a deer hunt with it this year and put it on a video.
We just may do that. Thanks for the comment Scott.
Thousand dollar gun comes with a $60 red dot lol
My thoughts exactly. UTG of all options is crazy
Absolutely ridiculous.
Try $1400
Any recommendations for a nice holster for this setup?
Awesome gun. But chrome for hunting?
Hermosa arma 💪💪💪💪😍😍😍😍
I can't believe you're running a $37 ginormous red dot, with a way too large 4moa Reticle on a $1300 revolver? You can get a good quality, smaller footprint budget friendly red dot with a more precise 1-2 moa reticle for $100-150. Personally I prefer reflex sights for handguns and I have a Trijicon SRO on my 6.5" 629 classic. Some more budget friendly options would be vortex venom, Burris fast fire, or a holosun 507. Just hard to understand why anyone would put the absolute cheapest, lowest quality red dot in existence on a very high quality revolver.....
It looks cool
Kristin, I think you are awesome!!!
Süper Oleeey Harika 👍👍👍
👍🏼
отличный револьвер
Just curious....is Kristen a dude or gal??
