I learned how to make a bracelet like this, but I was too lazy, I twisted the piece and only used a circle to fasten it, and now I am going to make a 72g 630mm long necklace.
Hiya Nick, Thank you for a great video, and chain. I love the design and workmanship; very well done. Have I mentioned Argentium silver? Only very slightly more in cost, but you can fuse rather than solder, polishes whiter, stays brighter longer, plus harder due to 940 parts per 1000 rather than 825, plus using Germanium and less copper. That looks like a expensive chain !! I saw the material cost.. and its very affordable. I’ve seen that link before, but not with the hammered texture, that’s make a world of difference. Beautiful old world rustic finish and a shiny polished finish for contrast, o bet a copper link in between the silver ones would also look nice, especially after the copper gets it’s worn appearance. I definitely take material cost into account when I’m making stuff to film … suppose that’s why in this video I was making it as a fine wrist chain. I borrowed the chunky one back to film it, i made it years ago. I like your idea of mixing it with copper, that would cut the cost down …. all the best … Nick

I mean... the material is ofcourse a big cost if you make it in gold or silver. But even when you use copper. It will stil be expensive. It is not something you make in 5 minutes. How long did it took you to make it???
being hobbyist I only make stuff for the pure pleasure of it … if doing it for commercial reasons yes you have to take time into account for pricing … this small chain is surprisingly quick to make maybe a couple of hours to finish one … N

I don’t like wearing copper … I seem to be able to taste the green monster through my skin. I always use silver solder for copper very neat and easy to use a little bit expensive because it’s used for professional jewellery making. The only problem being it will leave a silvery joint on copper. most people deal with this by copperplating over the top to camouflage it. this can be done traditionally with copper sulphate and electricity or an alternative is to use spent pickle that copper has been cleaned in by introducing some steel or wire wool. I did find some copper coloured “copper to copper brazing rod” in a DIY store one time works well but difficult to cut up small … N

Hi Tamera, Nice and sentimental to make your own rings. Soldering paste is great for small delicate items not so good on larger pieces that take a lot of time heating. stacking and soldering rings into a band is a very effective technique with endless variations on a theme. could also be designed so they look opposite in layout. The only problem I’ve had with rings like this is when soldering say three together they need to be very flat and level with each other so the soldier can run around the joints thoroughly. Iron binding wire is great for this, the rings can be assembled as desired and clamped together with a few twists of wire … good luck with it … Nick

Hi Wadeo, I tend to polish my hammers to get a better finish on the silver when working it. Some chains do take a long time to make, when there is hundreds of links to solder I tend to get it done over a few evenings … keeps me entertained during these long dark nights … cheers … Nick

an average size wire I like to use for chain making is around 1.3 mm. i’ve had some terrible experiences with purchases on the Internet so I now stick only to one company who I find professional, trustworthy and reliable. Checking out there website Cooksongold.com would be a good benchmark for what’s available and prices. i’m sure you can find silver solder paste elsewhere but here in the uk Cooksongold will always get my custom. solder paste is quick, easy and convenient to use but it has its limitations … only really good on quick small joints perfect for chain making … good luck with it … Nick

When it is a jewel rats for sale, I use electricity treat. Cut the plastic of of it and you have a beautiful copper... unfortunately it's is not non tarnish, so you have to give it an extra coat of a special varnish...

thanks for the comment Storm, i’ve collected a lot of tools over the years and I do love old and secondhand. When buying new I find a balance between cheap and quality. I use Cooksongold for jewellery tools … A very reliable company … cheers … Nick

It is hard to find good tools in Belgium. And good coppertreat. When it is a jewel rats for sale, I use electricity treat. Cut the plastic of of it and you have a beautiful copper... unfortunately it's is not non tarnish, so you have to give it an extra coat of a special varnish...
I do have some tool designs I would like to sell … One day when I retire and have the time … N
