@Miller Time The bottom line is sinking a US Aircraft Carrier - or even attempting to - is one of the dumbest things you could ever do as a nation. Not only would you get the full force of the largest Navy and military in the world, but their allies as well. Do you not think a great many nations would absolutely LOVE to sink an American Carrier? There's a reason none of them try.
Attacking a US Aircraft Carrier is right up there in the same league as trying to invade Russia. During winter.

    • @zachburkey447

With the extreme loss of aircraft, manpower, force projection and morale. You can be assured that the US would start leveling every Air and Naval base in the region. Carriers are the main weapon of US force projection from the sea, able to hit anywhere the water touches. So it makes complete sense that China and Russia would do everything to sink them.

It’s also an often overlooked detail that in 1992 Russia actually went and formed their very own version of NATO called the CTSO and was busy trying to expand that westward into Europe, and South into the Caucasus and Asia. However most of the counties approached by Moscow didn’t want a thing to do with Russia anymore and refused completely (e.g. Ukraine and the Baltic’s) and then promptly started requesting to join NATO instead to get away from Russian encroachment.

philippines must try to continue the mutual defence treaty with the US. if this doesnt work, then work with india and russia instead. india is a big rival of china, and struck a deal with the vietnamese to drill for gas in vietnam. philippines can also do the same. russia plans on selling china more gas. china does not have much alternatives when it comes to oil and gas because its production is very low. this puts russia in a good position against china. this is one of the reasons(but not the only one)why china wants south east asia, because that region has natural gas. now, if philippines strikes a deal with india or russia, those two countries can help philippines get gas in its western territories. filipino workers will earn money, philippines can stockpile gas, and china cant do anything. india has territorial disputes with china, and the chinese have been known for stealing russian technology. both india and russia will be eager to construct gas rigs for philippines. russian companies want to earn money too because of western sanctions. if philippines has the money, things will work out. if philippines does not have money, well, work harder and things can still work out. also, making a military alliance with malaysia and vietnam will be a good idea. getting air and naval defences from russia will also be good. russia actually plans on selling more brahmos missiles to india and vietnam. both india and vietnam have territorial disputes with china. if you cant get fancy stuff like s-300s, then get patriots from america. if you dont have money, work harder and improvise. even old defences like KUB and patriots can still be effective if you prioritise important cities. strengthen your economy and secure energy supplies. make a strong enough military to act as a deterrent. you can still retake your territories without firing a single shot. you just need to work harder. compared to philippines, korea went through hell just to get independence from japan. vietnam went through hell fighting three superpowers. india also went through hell in the numerous conflicts with pakistan. but look at all those countries. they are much stronger than philippines in almost every way possible. even north and south korea is better protected than philippines. also, dont feel too powerless. spread good ideas and reach out to other people. if you play it smart, anyone can become useful.

Unfortunately, it does cut both ways. The US has been appeased by most of the world, by invading Middle Eastern Countries to "Spread Democracy" and "Freedom". While we look at Russia and think "Russia evil Empire looking to expand", look at Russia. Russia sees US interventions across the world, invading and deposing leaders whenever it suits their agenda, and they think "Tit for Tat, or they'll come for us next". The West sees Russia as evil, although with Crimea, I can let slide due to various factors, but Russia sees NATO and America as expansionists of a different stripe.
And tbh, although Russia would prefer the Baltics out of NATO, they get nothing out of invasion. The Social Security and maintenance of two to three countries would kill their economy, which is only starting to move on from Sanctions and Oil Crash.
China is a different beast. China is playing the long game and their form of expansionism is far more dangerous than Russias ever was. They play the long game that Democracy's and Western Countries can't match. Slow economic annexation, slow border expansions, creeping forces. If China isn't neutered, then the US WILL lose it's position as the Number 1 Superpower. Russia will never, and has no intentions as a people, to be Number 1. China wants to be Number 1.

@@sebs.3917 Except Japan was not that superpower. The basic reason why they started the war in the pacific was to acquire more resources. You don't have resources, you don't win wars. So they were doomed from the start.
With China, we might see a different story. First of all, we are 75 years apart from what the theater of war looked back then. Right now, it takes 1 or 2 missile to put a carrier out for good. And missiles have the same range as an airplane. Especially Russian and Chinese, which are now developing hypersonic weapons as well.
Las but not least, building a carrier has become much more different than it was in WW2

As a longtime student of Chinese history and government who keeps a close eye on all developments related to China, and keeps in touch with westerners living and working in China, I am not at all worried about a serious military confrontation between the US and China. There are many troubling developments from China in recent years, and they are going to seem very dangerous, and may even be very dangerous, over the next 5-10 years, but these are the dying spasms of a failing government losing control over its population. 15 years from now, there will be a very different government in China. They'll look a lot like Russia immediately after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and their economy will be in absolute ruin. The real danger to global security will be Chinese generals trying to sell weapons and weapons technology on the black market.
This isn't to say the US should not do everything it can to make China think military conflict would be utterly disastrous to them. We absolutely must show them nothing but firm resolve, and develop and deploy the weapon systems necessary to stay ahead of China militarily. The resulting arms race will not only help keep the peace, but also accelerate China's collapse, much in the way the arms race was ruinous to the Soviet Union. In addition to the arms race, the economic warfare becoming conducted by President Trump on China, which may escalate, is certainly causing major companies all around the world to second-guess any plans at investment or expansion in China, and may soon cause many to pull out (private investment in China is already dropping rapidly).
It's also comforting to know that since China and the US are both major nuclear powers, neither side has any interest in actual war. That is why the two countries have been engaged in economic warfare, instead. The US was a bit slow to notice what China was doing, but that has certainly changed and now both sides are playing to win, with the US having a significant advantage in that fight.
As for the Baltics, I am unfortunately not so well informed about Russia, other than the general idea that Russia's international relations have always centered around two concepts. One, they are quite far north and cold, and have always desired secure warm water ports so they can trade in winter. Two, they are utterly paranoid about being invaded again, especially with their capital so close to where they've always been invaded from. I think both of these concerns are becoming a lot less serious as things change and the situation evolves.
Personally I view Putin much like a Hitler-type leader, a man who was a young soldier at the time his nation was defeated, and felt the leadership at the time betrayed his nation, and he's been determined ever since to make his nation strong again at any cost. In Putin's case, he was a KGB officer, not a soldier in WW1, and his nation was the USSR instead of Germany. I don't think he's a person we can ever really be friends with, because he is driven by paranoia and a sense of vengeance.
Hopefully, when Putin is finally out of the way, Russia can rejoin the normal community of nations. It's rather sad what happened to Russia over the last century and change. It was said, before the October Revolution (I think much before), that Russia and the United States were essentially sibling nations, destined to, together in peace, lead the world. I hope to live to see the day that Russia, under a new leader, joins NATO, and works with the rest of the West to confront threats in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. I can think of absolutely no reason why Russia and the US could not or should not be allies. The two nations have far, far more in common than they have differences. The two peoples have no reason to hate one another. They could be very successful trade partners, partners in space exploration, and close military allies.
I really can't stand the people who are always trying to pit Russia and the US against each other. Whether it's the military-industrial complex, the media, whatever. Screw those guys. Let's have peaceful partnership, and enjoy our shared destiny as leaders of the world and beyond.

I'm interested in doing a masters on the Baltic situation.
I agree fully on the sense that Russia would easily win a quick conflict and that NATO would be essentially powerless to do anything without risk of nuclear or any other WMD form of conflict. I think what you fail to mention on top of your reasons at the start is Russia's other motives such as the EU's role in addition to what you said about NATO. More importantly though, Russia needs a larger population to fix their struggling economy as the hydrocarbon market isn't working for them anymore to the extent that it did in Putin's first term. Taking those Baltic states would provide a quick boost to the economy. Another interesting area to look at is the EEU and SCO and how Russia and China will work together in future to destabilise this unipolar system we seem to be in.
I'll have to stop myself from writing about 5000 words here :)

A good point on which to start your masters would be an analysis of the statistics for the relevant powers. (EU having a much larger headcount and budget)
EU military dwarfs that of Russia, and Russia cannot hope to endure a costly conflict with its biggest export market. (the entire economy of Russia being smaller than just Italy's, let alone the rest of the EU).
Russian citizens are relatively impoverished and would be unwilling to endure the long terms implications of conflict with their more numerous, richer, more powerful neighbor.
Govt collapse and withdrawal due to internal tension, and the mounting body count from an offensive war would be probable.
Additionally EU territory pretty much cuts off Russia from the west/Atlantic.
A quick victory in the Baltics would only be the opening round in a long war (hot or cold) which Russia couldn't hope to win.
