I also own a BMC 1500 in a narrowboat and I have read that it is good practice to keep the glow plugs on after the engine has cold started for 10 seconds or so as this stops un-ignited diesel from washing the lubrication off the cylinder walls. The reason is that although you have used the glow plugs to warm things up before starting, after the engine has started, it is still cold so the diesel coming in will be below optimum temperature.
Just done this to my 1.8 and with it being an early one it still had the 1.5 glow plugs. If you buy them from calcutt boats they come with the correct drill bit with them. Not sure if yours is the same but if I keep the glow plugs primed after it has started for 20 seconds it runs so much sweeter. Great watching as usual 👍
I did buy them glow plugs from Calcutt boats & yes they came with the drill bit which was handy, I really should have mentioned that bit🤣 I got some advice from a pal who told me with the BMC engines they need 10 seconds of priming then start on full throttle which seems to have done the trick there's hardly any smoke now. thanks for watching👍
I’ve got the same engine in my narrow boat. It’s a 1965 and it still runs lovely. I give 30 seconds of glow plugs and if it doesn’t start within five seconds I know there’s something wrong (like the stop switch still pulled out!!). To me it doesn’t sound like glow plugs definitely something else. Revs sound way too low. Hope you get it sorted out nothing as bad as an engine that won’t start 😊
You should have seen heard me shout stop when you went to move that fuel lune away! Haha then i was like "wait" he's not new at this he knows what hes doing so shut your gab steve! Did start better and i like how much room you have to work in. Well good job ! You four stay safe an see you next round!
@@barelyfloating if I remember rightly I had to turn mine clockwise about 2 degrees that's why it's making that metallic knocking sound the pump is out
Hey Saul! Where did you get the jiggle pipe? Looks excellent for avoiding getting diesel into the canal! Do you think you might do one on fans and air ventilation soon? We think it's a 'cool' idea. :). Let us know when you guys are nearby.
Hi Guys, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I got it from Toolstation I think I will dig out the code & send it you. the ventilation stuff sounds like a great idea for a video I better get on it before anyone gets "wind" of it 🤣 Were well here hoping you are too, we've been a bit antisocial for a month or so (all work no play) but looking forward to getting back to normal. I will give you a shout when we get a free weekend so we can meet up. cheers
Bmc 1.5 are meant to be started with a wide open throttle. It helps a lot

Enjoy the northern stretches they’re lovely to walk along even the bits in Kendal which are filled in still have signs of the hard work done on them

I often forget to push the stop button back sometimes for several minutes 😂

Thanks Steve I do make it look easy which is unusual for me 🤣 She starts loads better now very little smoke👍
Take care Saul - enjoy your saunters up the northern reaches and hope the quacks put you together properly.
Well done Saul, great to see the engine starts better now. You need a week off vlogging after that bud.
The timing is out a bit on the diesel injection pump you need to turn the pump either way a couple of degrees
Thanks Dan it does look like the position of the pump is a little bit out from the original, I'm going to have a stab at fettling it soon 👍

Your welcome, how's the toe I used to have a pair of clown shoes somewhere if I find them you can have a borrow of em 🤣
@@barelyfloating there won’t be any shoes going on here for a good 8 months ahah. 3rd time lucky this toe! Had more new toes than I can count ha
Watching the opening titles. you struggling with the roof box. Suggest make some handle hole in it to make easier to grab hold.

@@barelyfloating sounds good. We’re heading North later this month so let’s coordinate a mooring area?
