    Nice ohne! My Q.r. is in the exact state of development. I cut back 4 weeks ago and got a lot of red,and small leaves now starting to grow. I'm Hopkins that the damn mildew doesn't appear! Two litte appletrees are already infected 🙁 THX for showing your methods! Greetings, Chris from Cologne/Germany.

      Hello! That's awesome, by q.r you mean quercus robur or rubra?. Yeah pruning is very beneficial to the trees when it's performed correctly. I hope yours continue to grow. Cheers!

      Rick Landau Bonsai it's a quercus robur wich was set by a jaybird in one of my flowerpots a few years ago. We also got a lot of quercus petrea here in Germany. You don't find a lot of Q. rubra here.

      @@zlatanderweise710 Oh wow, very curious that the jay placed it there. I just had a comment in another one of my videos of a gentleman saying a squirrel placed an acorn in one of his pots. Nature telling us to Bonsai XD. Cheers!

      Cool videos. We have two oaks growing. Sadly I don't think it was an animal who placed them, but we have a tonne of sycamore trees that just started to sprout in our pots so I rescued a few to try out growing.
      I'm sure you think this to but please arrange your video set-up a bit better. Get the whole tree in if you're explaining and then move in on specific areas. I know it's time consuming but it avoids a lot of jerky stuff and ensures you get to show us what you're taking about.

    Would love to see how these progress. Do you know how or if these oaks will reduce in leaf size?

    So, I have a bur oak I just transplanted. I know this isn’t the time of year to do so, but what could I do to help insure it will be successful? I got maybe 80% of the roots. Its about a 7 or 8” tall sapling with about 8 leaves, none of the original soil. I put it in a pot with half natural local clay soil and half garden soil from the hardware store. I threw a handful of extra sand into the mix. It was pretty dry, so it’s soaking now.

      Hi James, sorry i took so long to answer. Sometimes there are comments for which i do not get a notification in my phone and i think yours is one of them. How's your Bur Oak doing? When transplanting deciduous trees it's a good idea to prune some foliage to make up for lot roots during the transplant. In the first couple of weeks after the procedure you should also keep it in a spot that's cooler and a bit shadier so the plant doesn't struggle with the heat. Hope that helps for your next one. Cheers!

      Rick Landau Bonsai Thanks! That is what I ended up doing and it’s still alive. I’m pretty sure it’s a swamp white oak now.

      @@jamesn7156 glad to hear that. I googled the species cause i had never heard of it. Bringing acorns from wherever i go to plant them when i get back alla-Bilbo Baggins is my thing you know? maybe one day i'll get a swamp white oak and a live oak. Cheers!

      Rick Landau Bonsai Lucky for me, swamp whites are amongst the easiest oaks to transplant and tolerate a wide variety of conditions.

    nice to see the progress on your oaks. I have grown a few oaks from seeds and they are now 1 year old, but have only one trunk without branches. When can i prun them ? At wich age did you prun yours ? Greets from germany

    • @ricklandaubonsai5506
      @ricklandaubonsai5506  3 года назад

      hello! you can prune them in spring.what i do to develop more side branches is to clip the tip of the apex and reduce the number of leaves in the upper section of the tree when the tree is most vigorous. Usually late spring, early summer where i live ( that extra load of nitrogen from the rainy season usualy produces a flush of foliage). I started working on them right away, probably the first year in the case of the English ones that i grew from acorn. Hope that helps and yours grow strong. Thank you for watching. Cheers!

    What type/strength of fertilizer do you use on the oaks?

    • @ricklandaubonsai5506
      @ricklandaubonsai5506  3 года назад +1

      Hello! at first i was using slow-release organic with an NPK of 3-3-3 but i felt it was too soft for trees that are being developed and have their main structure being worked on. I switched to triple 17 but i'm very careful when dosing. In the coming years i'll go back to organic fertilizer as i focus more on fine ramification. It all depends on what stage of development your trees are on. hope that helps. Cheers!

    Hi there. Do you keep your bonsai inside or outside? Or do you change it up, depending on the season?

    What is sacrificial branch meaning please

    • @ricklandaubonsai5506
      @ricklandaubonsai5506  3 года назад +1

      it means leaving a branch to grow long and thick and then cut so the trunk becomes thicker and your bonsai looks older. you can see some trees with a sacrificial branch some of my ficus videos. cheers!
