Many years ago in 1991 I was laid off from a full time job and on that following day it had rained so I felt the need to preoccupy myself by doing something constructive. I pieced together an original Enterprise model kit I had had that was about 12 inches in length and completed it that same day sitting in my parents garage focusing with all my efforts into building it, painting it and decaling it. It felt good at the time to not only distract myself by thinking about what had happened but it was a feeling of accomplishment, a kind of a therapy that seemed to have helped me at the time. And I still have that model to this day as a memento.

I had a similar experience: something about "plastic therapy" makes you feel whole.

Thank you, Chris. You wrote a classic response and a helpful explanation, glad I was not the only one going through plastic therapy. One other detail I left out was that my Mom was grilling me as to why was I messing around building a toy when I should be looking for a job.@@ChrisGurin

This brings back great memories of when I was a young teen in the 1990s building my AMT and ERTL Star Trek models. I built 1701 through 1701-E, Romulan ship, Klingon Bird of Prey, the Reliant, Excelsior, as well as the Millenium Falcon. The 1990s were great times for this hobby.

Was skimming through BSG and Trek modelling videos, stumbled onto yours. Watched the whole hour. Your way of working and (calm, quiet and rare) commenting and close up sound recording is just perfect for a relaxing afternoon.
And unlike a lot of modellers, you talked about where you saw some of your skills lacking still. Very honest.

Thanks for showing your build of this kit, all those wallpaper decals are amazing. My father had a few different releases of this kit stored in his basement with dreams of building all the enterprises in one scale. He never got around to it, but I may build them. But right now, I am going to build, or finishing to build, a vintage 1/650 scale AMT long box kit my father started 50 years ago and never completed. My dad died of Covid-19 last month and after finding this kit in his basement I decided to finish it as a way to retroactively build the kit "with" my dad. I started a vlog here on youtube that will document the project and would welcome whatever insight or advice you might have about building it. Thank you.

I recall painting all the Aztec detail on my 1/1400 "D" in the early 90ies before TNG even aired here in Germany.

I may have said this before but thanks for giving the colour call outs and manufacturers details. So many kits and RUclips build reviews just say "grey" or "white" etc and others use a complex mix of their own invention.
My biggest problem in finishing Trek kits has been the painting as i want my ships to look part of the same fleet. Using bespoke mixes means when it comes to touch up work i can never get the colours to match and so having a standardised straight from the bottle colour recommendation really helps.

Thank you for posting! I am building this kit now and it helps to see how others have done things. This is kind of a re release of a kit from the '80s when there were only 3 Enterprises. I have both kits, so some aftermarket decals were bought and made a Mirror universe ship (for TOS) and an Enterprise-A from the duplicate moldings.

I'm a little late to the game since this video was put out 5 years ago, but I picked up this kit a few months ago and I'm really digging the decals. It's 2022 and I just got this kid for Christmas. Thankfully I'm decent at hand painting models because the decals were a nightmare. What I ended up doing was holding the decal nearby while I hand-painted the section in question. Might not be 100% screen accurate, and I still used the registry and livery decals, but the decals won't bubble off and look like cheap stickers in six months. You did a fantastic job, though. I don't know many people who have your patience for large decals.

AHA! I figured out the discrepancy with the 1701 Refit decals! The numbers actually match up with the decals for NCC-1701-A that is packaged with the kit AMT-660 (1701; 1701-A; 1701-B) ... Funny because the decals and the mold are quite different actually. I've got both kits and am hoping that doing one will help me figure out the decals on the other!

I just got this set not too long ago and currently working on it. Although taken a break for the time being. For the decals for the 1701, 1701 Refit, B and D I didn't put the entire ships together. I'm applying the decals in sub assemblies so they line up properly. I even sanded the raised detailing quite a bit for the Enterprise-B so the decals go down smoothly.
For the Enterprise-C I didn't bother with the wallpaper decals that came with the kit. I knew from other videos it wouldn't look good and doesn't sit right. So I hand painted the colors and got close to the original studio model look. I will be using the decals from the kit for the E-C for the name, registry and escape pod hatches.
Edit: For the Enterprise-D being "that blue" the aztec decals for that one the color matches how it looks for the changes they made for the filming model for Generations.

Those decals looked like a PAIN to put on. I was freaking out for you. Funny enough, the one critique I had out of all of the build was that the classic Constitution is missing the darts on the bottom of the saucer section! 😵

Very cool and very detailed! I was looking at this kit on Amazon and after seeing them built I am gonna get the kit. The decals are a different story though. I might just put the name of the ship on and call it good being I have no experience with decals. I subscribed to you channel also by the way.

Beautiful work on these. I was curious how a blue basecoat would look on the D and I may give it a try on mine, knowing it will look a bit bold in person. Thanks also for the heads up on the issues with the C decals.

Enterprise-A was basically a Constitution Refit, so if it had a Enterprise-A Decal you could just place that on it. I recall getting a TOS Enterprise model a long time ago and the decals came with the 12 Original Constutution Class Starship names and numbers. So if you bought enough of them you could recreate the entire fleet that was never shown in the TOS Series.

Mate, you're awesome!!!! love your vids!! I also love how you know when to stop(if you know what i mean). i'm a bit of a perfectionist and i'm sure you are too. your videos showed me how to deal with things that don't always go the way i want them to. perfection is a good goal whilst building model kits or anything ! but sometimes you just have to let it go. the things you make( including the stuff ups) are unique to you.
thanks for the great vids man. keep it up!!!!! :)

The Enterprise-D looks amazing! The "too-blue" aztecing was the first thing that stuck out to me as well. The pattern on the nacelles is a bit strange as well. Despite all that, the shape and general look are fantastic. Gives a real sense of scale of this behemoth. Really like the additional details you put on like the windows. Though someone left the warp core ejection door open! 😱
You've done a great job on all the models. They start with an excellent amount of detail and you've really accented it perfectly and filled in the gaps. While I get that some of the paint jobs and detailing (e.g. phaser strip and E deflector) are frustrating, they look really good at a normal distance and hold up reasonably well to scrutiny. Really love the work you did here!

Thanks for posting. Now I have some forewarning about which models are more difficult. I'm terrible with matching paint and such...I regretted buying this model kit the day after I bought it. Oh well, again, thanks for the help, I'll enjoy the little ones.

Hi, i think they all look great, you've done a great job i think you should be happy really.I have see modellers who do it for a living and some of their brush work leaves alot to be desired so don't worry about it.The problem is, when we see a brush stroke start to go wrong, we try to hard to fix it.That then makes matters worse when all you have to do if it is possible is paint back over it or remove and start again,it usually boils down to using a great paint brush and patience.

I bought two of the original set, and built two of the TOS movie versions, one as "1701", the other as "1701-A".
I modified the base so the extra ship could be mounted like the others.

When I built the ENT-B in 1/2500, I sanded the raised detailing off, and it was well worth the effort! it looks much more realistic!

    • @markbernero9302
      @markbernero9302 6 лет назад

They may still have the "B" available in the small 3-pc sets with the "A" , so I would definitely recommend trying a smooth "B". I would leave the detailing on the nacelles, however, because it looked much harder to sand without messing up the bussard collectors and aft fins.

  • @JimPaulJr

Very nice work on the builds. I built all of these in the separate kits along with the deep space nine set, the klingon ships, and the set with the Reliant. Would have been nice to have the windows printed on the Enterprise C and E, just like they did for the D. Used a extra fine point sharpie. I think this is the best model of the Enterprise D that they did even though it is small. Hoping they make the NX-01 available separately sometime rather than having to buy the whole set just for one ship.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you.

The Enterprise-B, -C, and -E kits were never meant to be wallpapered in decals this way. With the Enterprise-C, especially, I found it a great deal more satisfying to paint most of the color patterning myself, and then just apply the registry decals - much like the original version of the kit from the late '90s/early '00s. (Also makes painting the windows far, far easier.)

When I did the D, I used (I think) "duck egg blue"... it really brought down the boldness of the blue decals
As for the E, that must be a production problem, I had the same problem with the crooked nacelle

  • @kdryan21
    @kdryan21 4 года назад +2

The reason the Enterprise D decals look too dark is because you painted it white. The actual color of the ship is 'Duck Egg Blue.' Had you used the right color, the decals would have been more subdued.
