This scene has a lot of emotional weight. Artanis and Zeratul once activated the Xel'Naga Temple together in BW. Artanis stands alone, without Zeratul, in a desperate bid to overload that same temple. One might feel loneliness when confronted with the memory of this place. Artanis must be thinking of Zeratul in that moment of apparent despair. Separated from the Khala, from the mentor he killed with his own hands, facing overwhelming odds, his despair must be even deeper. As he is overwhelmed by the Zerg, Artanis remembers the words of his mentor, and understands that despite being isolated, there is great pride to be found in fighting in such a state... ''For our warrior hearts are bound by honor, and tradition. Battle is waged in the name of the many...The brave who generation after generation, choose the mantle of...Dark Templar!''

Vuong Chu So Tassadar wasn't also a mentor figure to Artanis in your opinion? I said "first part of Zeratuls narration in this scene" not "all his words" if you're blind. And guess what? The words you quoted are said AFTER he fell and got overrun. To put it in your head so you might understand: "But none of us are ever truly alone" should have been first words said by Zeratul. That is the moment he gets his "second wind". They're BOTH his heroes whom he looks up to and who's legacy he carries. They both "passed the torch" to him.

Nope. If he had, his shields would have been restored to the half-way point at least, and in this we clearly see him lose them. Resurgence restores his health and shields to max and blasts any nearby enemies in a dome around him.
What I really like about this scene is that it serves a reply to the idea that the protoss and their khala are just totally superior to humans. The starcraft universe up to this point has pretty much just talked up the khala and how it makes human existence seem pale and lonely in comparison. This scene reminds us that there are an entire faction of protoss of CHOSE this human-like existence, and begins to explain why. It points out how true unity and connection is not about sharing every thought and emotion. It is about making a choice. This scene is just so deep man. It breaks down and highlights what it really means to be connected, in a society, in a community, in a friendship, in a marriage, whatever. Nothing is more powerful than a group of individuals making a choice to be together, and I can't ever get over how beautifully blizzard has illustrated that here.
It also serves as a stark contrast to Artanis' speech at the intro cinematic about their unity and their bond through the Khala. It's a realization of sorts for Artanis that it isn't just the Khala that binds the Protoss together.
It was also hinted by Zagara, in HoTS that she feels pity to the humans because despite them being together, they are all alone inside, but I agree with you

+Nomeneta Saili Actually, according to an interview, Blizzard said that they likened Legacy of the Void to 300, where a tiny army (surviving protoss) stands up against an overwhelming force (Amon), so your reminiscence of 300 spartans is exactly what Blizzard wanted you to feel!
I remember that everyone was furious when blizzard made Artanis the MC for protoss when it was speculate and also confirm by blizz that protoss campaign it would be Zeratul be the MC.

I was wondering what that giant thing behind his back was for... the narration and the fight were pretty awesome, especially for a scout pilot :) Artanis was a scout pilot in SC1 (here's what scout is: starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Scout)
This is perfection. Artanis staring quietly at all those zerglings coming out of that giant nydus. Slowly knees and charges the shield. Not a bit of fear. The bunch of zerglings killed. The "resurrection" moment. Zeratul's voice in the background. That Zeratul's blade. The music. That armor in combat mode. He becomes an OP Dark High Templar Zealot. A planet destroyed. This is too much for me.
And people wanted Zeratul as the primary focused character of LotV because Artanis 'just wasn't as awesome'. If their opinions didn't immediately change after this scene, what the hell else could they want?
Both Tassadar and Zsratul would have been proud. Hell. VORAZUN herself acknowledges that Artanis basically went through the famed Shadow Walk of the Nerazim up to eleven. And is the last of the Protoss to ever do so on Shakuras.
I love Artanis. He has grown from a young leader in the Brood War into a badass warrior and hero that his people needs. He would have made both of his mentors, Tassadar and Zeratul proud.
AnomalyINC at "of Dark Templar" when the screen darkens for just a moment. Also, if you notice, when he does Resurgence and blows the Zerg away, he does it with his right hand, Zeratul's gauntlet.
I like how this cutscene matches Artanis during gameplay. First, his shields protect him, but then they falter. And when all seems lost, he saves himself by glorious resurgence.
actually at artanis back is a scout ship of the nerrazines or dark templar or if u don't know its the figure of zeratuls ship that he use to travel trough space and its main purpose is to hold high templars energy and regain energy that is awarded to artanis because he was chosen by the conclave to be the hierach or if I spelled that right for both high templar and dark templar
Another cool thing about this intro is how it contrasts with the Legacy of the Void intro. Artanis says "we are bound by the khala... the sacred union of our every thought and emotion". In this cinematic, Zeratul bookends this saying, after the khala has been severed, that they are "bound by honor, tradition... battle is waged in the name of the many..." In effect, the contrast is saying that protoss honor, tradition, and selflessness is the same kind of thing as "the sacred union of our every thought and emotion". Because after all, it kinda is. Also, i absolutely love the fact that the lotv opening is showing a proxy pylon and this cinematic is showing a surprise DT / recall because ofc, protoss honor.
back then in first game....i thought of him as the Skinny weak Tactician Templar of Protoss but now he become almost Godlike as Kerrigan in second game and damn he look more badass when he walk away while flames started to scatter.......i hope to see him more in 3rd game if this is not the final story
Starcraft 2 is so much harder to appreciate without having played the predecessors, blizzard loves itself some continuity altogether i'd call SC1 and brood war to be from the golden age, where the graphics weren't all that pretty but the stories, or rather the legends just blew you away. getting that to continue properly is at best a 50/50 chance, wherein those 50s are wether or not the fans approve. but these movie sequences, mmmmhmmm, starting to suspect they created overwatch because their animation department wanted to show off.
If only every cinematic could've been like this. I would've been fine if Blizz had postponed the game a couple months. "Yo guys, we're not gonna get the game out at the original date... Buuuuut, the cinematic's will ALL LOOK AMAZING! Even the in-game ciematics!"
My favortie quote from Starcraft 2. I hope that the warrior at the Sitong Bridge of Beijing, China is able to see the quote and bare it in mind. YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
It's like a movie reference of Star Wars: A New Hope Artanis (Luke Skywalker) Zeratul (Obi-Wan Kenobi) Amon Brood (Galactic Empire) Shakuras (Death Star)
What really hammers this home is that Artanis wields weapons of both the Khalai and the Nerazim - like Tassadar before him, he is learning the ways of his dark brethren, wielding the power of both the khala and the void. In that way, Tassadar won, as did the entire Protoss race.
This scene has a lot of emotional weight. Artanis and Zeratul once activated the Xel'Naga Temple together in BW. Artanis stands alone, without Zeratul, in a desperate bid to overload that same temple.

I remember that everyone was furious when blizzard made Artanis the MC for protoss when it was speculate and also confirm by blizz that protoss campaign it would be Zeratul be the MC.
It's this cut scene that switched my favorite and royalty to Protoss completely. And Artanis...seeing how much he grew made me teared (kinda felt like a mom to her growing son lol).
Alone.
It is said that those of our kind suffer, separated from the glory of the Battle.net
But none of us are ever truly alone.
For our warrior hearts are bound by all-ins... MMR...
Cheese is waged in the name of the many...
...the brave, who generation after generation, choose the mantle of-
-Starcraft players!
The drums at the begging are freaking awesome!
I was wondering what that giant thing behind his back was for... the narration and the fight were pretty awesome, especially for a scout pilot :)
Artanis was a scout pilot in SC1 (here's what scout is: starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Scout)
+xLetalis he was pretty much promoted way past scout pilot in the lore when Tassadar went AWOL artanis became executor.
+xLetalis It seems to store energy and possibly strengthen his shield, I wish he used it more.
+orenoishadoukuurass true, I just didn't know he was such a melee fighter ;]
+xLetalis all Protoss are melee fighters!! Entaro Zeratul!!!
+orenoishadoukuurass :) Karax didn't seem like one
I think this is the best monologue I've ever heard in a video game. Ever.
2:02 "Cool guys don't look at explosions, they just walk away"
This is perfection.
Artanis staring quietly at all those zerglings coming out of that giant nydus.
Slowly knees and charges the shield. Not a bit of fear.
The bunch of zerglings killed.
The "resurrection" moment.
Zeratul's voice in the background.
That Zeratul's blade.
The music.
That armor in combat mode.
He becomes an OP Dark High Templar Zealot.
A planet destroyed.
This is too much for me.
If anyone know other cinematic just as cool as that, i'm listening.
Artanis vs Zeratul is also a very good cinematic
And people wanted Zeratul as the primary focused character of LotV because Artanis 'just wasn't as awesome'.
If their opinions didn't immediately change after this scene, what the hell else could they want?
+Zeratul Artanis was the player character for the protoss campaign in SC1, he was there all along too
Both Tassadar and Zsratul would have been proud. Hell. VORAZUN herself acknowledges that Artanis basically went through the famed Shadow Walk of the Nerazim up to eleven. And is the last of the Protoss to ever do so on Shakuras.
I hear his voice and all I can think is; "Welcome Commander, to the Xcom Project."
+Mu Draconis
Funny how Zeratul voice sounds exactly like Optimus Prime...
This scene still makes me shed tears of awesomeness to this day
1:38 holy shit the way he gathers psionic power and then smashes his fist in the ground creating an über-psionic storm is just too badass
" The brave, who generation after generation, choose the mantle of... DARK TEMPLAR."
I love Artanis. He has grown from a young leader in the Brood War into a badass warrior and hero that his people needs. He would have made both of his mentors, Tassadar and Zeratul proud.
My favorite thing about this video is how the word "mantle" occurs right as the charged overload prism hurdles through Shakuras's mantle.
This scene is an excellent counterpoint to the Yrel & Durotan V Blackhand scene which came out around the same time.
Kakaru : Damn you Vorazun, DONT DO THIS!
Did you see that shield of his? its even stronger than that of an archon which explains why he has so much of it in game.
I feel like Zeratul may have said this before. Maybe when he administered the Shadow Walk to Tassadar?
Epic cinematic. RIP Zeratul. 1997-2015
I would love to have this as my Call Ringtone ❤
my whole blood was boiling when zeratul said "choose the mantle of dark templar
lol artanis is badass
Still gives me chills.
This video alone, it is said, will forever move me beyond the glory of the Khala.
8 years later and Artanis is still a badass.
Being alone is good sometimes knowing the fact that you are fighting for the right cause
His eyes should have turned green for this, just for a moment!
AnomalyINC at "of Dark Templar" when the screen darkens for just a moment. Also, if you notice, when he does Resurgence and blows the Zerg away, he does it with his right hand, Zeratul's gauntlet.
Glad I am not the only one who noticed the screen darkening.
Artanis was so entirely badass through LOTV. Next Dog or Child i Get, whichever comes first, that will be his name
+Jackson McSteel :)
2024- Still love this game series and the cinema
This is such a badass cinematic.
I like how this cutscene matches Artanis during gameplay. First, his shields protect him, but then they falter. And when all seems lost, he saves himself by glorious resurgence.
Artanis, warping out only after killing dozens of zerg while the planet blows up around him: For the record, I could have done that at any time.
Artanis is the coolest protoss in the StarCraft saga -after Zeratul, of course.
actually at artanis back is a scout ship of the nerrazines or dark templar or if u don't know its the figure of zeratuls ship that he use to travel trough space and its main purpose is to hold high templars energy and regain energy that is awarded to artanis because he was chosen by the conclave to be the hierach or if I spelled that right for both high templar and dark templar
This is more or less how you end up feeling in Heroes of the Storm when playing Artanis and laned against Abathur and Zagara both.
Zeratul is voiced by ARAGHAST THE PILLAGER and Captain Davian Thule.
Damn, Fred Tatasciore made some of the badassest scenes in the history of gaming.
Almost forgot to watch it today
So glad the narrator was Zeratul :)
Another cool thing about this intro is how it contrasts with the Legacy of the Void intro. Artanis says "we are bound by the khala... the sacred union of our every thought and emotion". In this cinematic, Zeratul bookends this saying, after the khala has been severed, that they are "bound by honor, tradition... battle is waged in the name of the many..."
In effect, the contrast is saying that protoss honor, tradition, and selflessness is the same kind of thing as "the sacred union of our every thought and emotion". Because after all, it kinda is.
Also, i absolutely love the fact that the lotv opening is showing a proxy pylon and this cinematic is showing a surprise DT / recall because ofc, protoss honor.
I'm playing it for the first time and I can't believe so much awesome shit has happened this early in the story.
the words spoken are very empowering.......!!!!!!
*It's like hearing Optimus Prime's voice as he's passing on the Autobot Matrix of Leadership unto Rodimus Prime.*
Artanis is Bumblebee while
Zeratul is Optimus
I almost forgot xLetalis plays SC2 as well, aside from Witcher. Awesome.
back then in first game....i thought of him as the Skinny weak Tactician Templar of Protoss but now he become almost Godlike as Kerrigan in second game and damn he look more badass when he walk away while flames started to scatter.......i hope to see him more in 3rd game if this is not the final story
Starcraft 2 is so much harder to appreciate without having played the predecessors, blizzard loves itself some continuity
altogether i'd call SC1 and brood war to be from the golden age, where the graphics weren't all that pretty but the stories, or rather the legends just blew you away. getting that to continue properly is at best a 50/50 chance, wherein those 50s are wether or not the fans approve. but these movie sequences, mmmmhmmm, starting to suspect they created overwatch because their animation department wanted to show off.
Nothing like a good warm up battle with a few hundred aliens to knock a leader in shape 👏 💪
ITS SO COOL TO SE ARTANIS WIELD ZERATUL'S PSI-BLADE!!!! ITS SO DAMN AWESOME!!!!
That is some epic shit. The deep voice of Zeratul and all the power displayed make this one my favuorite cinematic.
2:09 Freeza: "... Pfff... Amateur."
Get goosebumps every time I watch this 😅
best lotv cinematic
i cant believe how goodblizzard sc2 cinematics are. this is the apex. the epitome. no company will ever make cinematics as epic as blizzard.
honestly the best cinematic ever
When Artanis simply had enough and kick back asses.
In 1:57 I thought for one second that Artanis eyes would turn green, at least temporarily
Cool Protos don't look at explosions. They warp away in a slow motion fashion!
Pump these cutscenes out faster man! Im kinda freaking out right now...
+Spencer Jones I'm going to bed ;] more tomorrow
He destroyed Shakuras like a boss
Goose bumps! Every time! ☺️
It's like a movie reference of Star Wars: A New Hope
Artanis (Luke Skywalker)
Zeratul (Obi-Wan Kenobi)
Amon Brood (Galactic Empire)
Shakuras (Death Star)
What really hammers this home is that Artanis wields weapons of both the Khalai and the Nerazim - like Tassadar before him, he is learning the ways of his dark brethren, wielding the power of both the khala and the void. In that way, Tassadar won, as did the entire Protoss race.
He is a high/dark/taldarim templar. All in one.
