    StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void is a military science fiction real-time strategy video game developed and released by Blizzard Entertainment for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. You are Hierarch Artanis, leader of the mighty protoss race. Years ago, your homeworld of Aiur fell to the merciless zerg Swarm. Now, at long last, you have raised a powerful fleet of warships known as the Golden Armada, and are poised to reclaim your world. But an ancient evil-Amon-threatens this destiny and the fate of the entire galaxy. Only you can reunite the protoss factions and defeat the coming darkness before it consumes all life in the sector.

    Years later, this is still awesome. And I still love how Zeratul emphasizes that the Dark Templar CHOOSE their paths. The other Protoss have it assigned by caste. The ones that severed themselves from the Khala voluntarily had the choice to be whatever they wanted. And still picked that.

      Thats a incredibly potent observation. For the Nerezeim, it’s all about choice. To be a Dark Templar, to fight against countless for the sake of the many, is a mantle chosen. Well done.

      @@ZenZudokai I came to the same point with one extra remark: Answer this question: which bond is the stronger? When you learn it it through birthright? (This is Artanis before Zeratul's lesson), or when you growing it inside you? (This is Artanis AFTER Zeratul's lesson)

    This scene has a lot of emotional weight. Artanis and Zeratul once activated the Xel'Naga Temple together in BW. Artanis stands alone, without Zeratul, in a desperate bid to overload that same temple.
    One might feel loneliness when confronted with the memory of this place. Artanis must be thinking of Zeratul in that moment of apparent despair. Separated from the Khala, from the mentor he killed with his own hands, facing overwhelming odds, his despair must be even deeper.
    As he is overwhelmed by the Zerg, Artanis remembers the words of his mentor, and understands that despite being isolated, there is great pride to be found in fighting in such a state...

      +sumerian88 You not having any comments here is a disgrace! You nailed it; props, man.
      The background is strong, although not quite underlined by the cutscene. It is, nevertheless, possibly more powerful than the whole story of WoL + HotS combined.
      Something changed in Blizz delivery here, and it was so much for the best.

    I love these "passing the torch" moments in movies, in games, in stories. This is the perfect expression of being awesome.
    Artanis was just like everyone else at one point, but he grew in the shadow of his mentor Tassadar and learned to never give up from Zeratul but ultimately he found his strength in the examples of sacrifice of the two protoss he admired most: Zeratul and Tassadar. It was in these two suns that Artanis became the Supernova,
    This is something I want to see in a Star Wars movie but done right.

      +TheArklyte I would disagree with you. I personally think Zeratul would be the best voice for this cinematic because of 2 reasons:
      1. He is the Dark Prelate, an honor rank among the Dark Templar, so it should be right if i assume that he has to be present or maybe holding the ceremony.
      2. I would like to quote the comment of summerian88 below, and add nothing more:
      "This scene has a lot of emotional weight. Artanis and Zeratul once activated the Xel'Naga Temple together in BW. In this scene, Artanis stands alone, without Zeratul, in a desperate bid to overload that same temple.

      Vuong Chu
      So Tassadar wasn't also a mentor figure to Artanis in your opinion? I said "first part of Zeratuls narration in this scene" not "all his words" if you're blind. And guess what? The words you quoted are said AFTER he fell and got overrun. To put it in your head so you might understand: "But none of us are ever truly alone" should have been first words said by Zeratul. That is the moment he gets his "second wind". They're BOTH his heroes whom he looks up to and who's legacy he carries. They both "passed the torch" to him.

    • @vuongchu2777
      @vuongchu2777 8 лет назад +4

      +TheArklyte well, tassadar was, but to artanis, he was more of a high templar than a dark templar. also, Zeratul was born Nerazim, so it would be better if Zeratul is the narrator of the cinematic. As later when Artanis has a conversation with the Matriarch, which name i forgot, he also said that “your people (the Nerazim) guard your customs closely"

    i don't think anyone has realized this but when artanis was on the mothership over aiur he had pale skin but now after the battle of shakuras his skin turned dark, this is the result of both living on shakuras for so long and naturally absorbing the void energies emitted by shakura's star as well as being separated from the khala and undertaking the shadow-walk ritual.. so artanis really is a dark templar now, hes still a bit naive but has the conviction of zeratul now.. very impressive for a scout pilot :)

      @@Ironboyg101 hey, little bit late to the party but as from what I understand the zeratul blade also Has a meaning in artanis live. Remember that he is a daelam tenplar and since the blue blade. But zeratul blade is green which is the nerazim one. Artanis had both of his blades blue which shown that he was fully a templar. But after Zeratul dies Artanis takes his blade and becomes somewhat of a dark templar. Hence the both blades. Artanis is both a templar and a nerazim
      So it's not only to carry Zeratul will to defeat Amon but also to show a new Generation of the protoss

    What I really like about this scene is that it serves a reply to the idea that the protoss and their khala are just totally superior to humans. The starcraft universe up to this point has pretty much just talked up the khala and how it makes human existence seem pale and lonely in comparison. This scene reminds us that there are an entire faction of protoss of CHOSE this human-like existence, and begins to explain why. It points out how true unity and connection is not about sharing every thought and emotion. It is about making a choice. This scene is just so deep man. It breaks down and highlights what it really means to be connected, in a society, in a community, in a friendship, in a marriage, whatever. Nothing is more powerful than a group of individuals making a choice to be together, and I can't ever get over how beautifully blizzard has illustrated that here.

    • @allanv2497
      @allanv2497 4 года назад +28

      It also serves as a stark contrast to Artanis' speech at the intro cinematic about their unity and their bond through the Khala. It's a realization of sorts for Artanis that it isn't just the Khala that binds the Protoss together.

    Another cool thing about this intro is how it contrasts with the Legacy of the Void intro. Artanis says "we are bound by the khala... the sacred union of our every thought and emotion". In this cinematic, Zeratul bookends this saying, after the khala has been severed, that they are "bound by honor, tradition... battle is waged in the name of the many..."
    In effect, the contrast is saying that protoss honor, tradition, and selflessness is the same kind of thing as "the sacred union of our every thought and emotion". Because after all, it kinda is.
    Also, i absolutely love the fact that the lotv opening is showing a proxy pylon and this cinematic is showing a surprise DT / recall because ofc, protoss honor.

    Starcraft 2 is so much harder to appreciate without having played the predecessors, blizzard loves itself some continuity
    altogether i'd call SC1 and brood war to be from the golden age, where the graphics weren't all that pretty but the stories, or rather the legends just blew you away. getting that to continue properly is at best a 50/50 chance, wherein those 50s are wether or not the fans approve. but these movie sequences, mmmmhmmm, starting to suspect they created overwatch because their animation department wanted to show off.

  • @Luxai

    What really hammers this home is that Artanis wields weapons of both the Khalai and the Nerazim - like Tassadar before him, he is learning the ways of his dark brethren, wielding the power of both the khala and the void. In that way, Tassadar won, as did the entire Protoss race.
